The presentations provides an overview of Cloud computing including it's origins , different types of cloud models , examples for each model , benefits and disadvantages.

3. Cloud Computing : Some History
The underlying concept of cloud computing dates back to the 1960s, when John
McCarthy (computer and cognitive scientist) opined that "computation may
someday be organized as a public utility."
In the early days (1960’s) of data processing, computers as
well as their operation were expensive. Therefore the
Mainframe Computer operators were looking for ways to utilize them in the best
way possible. Companies with large mainframe computers
offered their computing resources to external users.
The above concept of maximizing resource
utilization by shared usage is the foundation of
cloud computing
The first scholarly use of the term “cloud computing” was in a 1997 lecture by
Ramnath Chellappa.
4. Cloud Computing : Is it a new technology?
Windows Live Hotmail, formerly known as Hotmail ,
1996 a free web based mail service was launched in July
1996 .
1999 Started providing CRM app (Software As A Service)
1999 Introduced virtualization to x86 systems that
transforms a single system into multiple servers.
Amazon started offering cloud computing (servers).
2006 Users can rent compute instance(server) on internet
and run their own applications.
5. Cloud Computing :Why is Everyone Interested ?
Legacy Rack
Mount Servers Exponential increase in the
(Year 2004) compute power of current servers
versus servers that were available
few years back.
Single Blade Matured virtualization technology
(Year 2012) and products. Ability to virtualize
CPU , Memory , storage , Network
= and provide excellent isolation and
advanced features.
Can pack more servers in the same
space due to the reduced form
factor.
Connectivity to internet – Cheaper
link costs with high uptime.
6. Cloud Computing : What it is ?
Cloud Computing in simple language
Subscribe to and use compute resources like servers , Operating systems , storage ,
Databases and applications in a matter of minutes.
Pay for the subscribed resource based on usage. For example based on the number of
users or the duration used.
Add more resources quickly as and when required .
Release resources when not in use and save on the costs
Resources are accessible over network(Internet)
Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network
access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers,
storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with
minimal management effort or service provider interaction

9. Cloud Computing :Advantages
Advantages of Using Public Cloud Computing
Pay as you Pay only for the resource you use and for the duration you use. E.g.
use You will pay only for the time you used a compute instance(server)
Scalability Instantly provision additional resources as required
Elasticity Provision or Release resources as per requirement which results in
reduced costs
Cloud providers are expected to have higher redundancies and
Availability resilient systems compared a typical self managed setup
You are able to focus on your core business instead of wasting your
Maintenance time and energies in running IT
You pay on usage basis and are not burdened with making large one
Opex Model time Capex investments.
10. Cloud Computing : Disadvantages
Disadvantages of Using Public Cloud Computing
You have reduced control of your IT systems and are completely
Control dependent on the service provider
Data Since the resources are shared among different entities in a public
security cloud , there are higher risks of breaches
You may find it very tough and not cost effective to move from one
Lock in
cloud provider to another if you are not satisfied with the services.
Costs incurred over longer periods of time (say 3 or more years) may
Costs
not be any less when compared to having IT systems in-house
