 What is 5S?
 A five step technique for eliminating the waste from manufacturing and service processes, which originates from the ‘Kaizen’ approach to continuous
 improvement. It involves everyone in stabilising, maintaining and improving the workplace.
 The 5S Process, or simply ‘5S’, is a structured program to systematically achieve total organisation, cleanliness and standardisation in the workplace. A well-organised
 workplace results in a safer, more efficient, and more productive operation. It boosts the morale of the workers promoting a sense of pride in their work and
 ownership of their responsibilities.

 ‘5S’ was invented in Japan, and stands for five (5) Japanese words that start with the letter 'S': Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. An equivalent set of five 'S'
 words in English have likewise been adopted by many to preserve the ‘5S’ acronym in English usage. These are: Sort, Set (in place), Shine, Standardise, and
 Sustain. Some purists do not agree with these English words - they argue that these words have lost the essence of the original 5 Japanese words.

Visual Management and Control - 2 day Workshop

 Visual management is one of the lean techniques designed so that anyone entering a work place, even those who are unfamiliar with the detail of the processes,
can very rapidly see what is going on, understand it and see what is under control and what isn’t. Essentially, the current status of the operation can be assessed, at
a glance. Visual management evolved in factories, but its principles apply equally in any setting, from offices to call centres. Ask yourself this, with a basic idea of
what your organisation does, could someone walk into your building/office and understand what the process is? Would they be able to see how work passes
through the process, or people pass through the service? Do we make it easier for staff to perform by creating a visual workplace? If the answer to any of these

Poke Yoka - 2 day Workshop

Who should attend?

Poka Yoke is a quality management concept developed by a manufacturing engineer named Shigeo Shingo to prevent human errors from occurring in the
production line. Poka yoke comes from two Japanese words – ‘yokeru’ which means “to avoid”, and ‘poka’ which means ‘inadvertent errors’. Thus, poka yoke more
or less translates to ‘avoiding inadvertent errors’ The main objective of poke yoke is to achieve zero defects. In fact, it is just one of the many components of
Shingo’s Zero Quality Control (ZQC) system, the goal of which is to eliminate defective products. Poka yoke is more of a concept than a procedure. Thus, its
implementation is governed by what people think they can do to prevent errors in their workplace, and not by a set of step-by-step instructions on how they should
do their job. Poka yoke is implemented by using simple objects like fixtures, jigs, gadgets, warning devices, paper systems, and the like to prevent people from
committing mistakes, even if they try to! These objects, known as poka yoke devices, are usually used to stop the machine and alert the operator if something is
about to go wrong. Anybody can and should practice poka yoke in the workplace. Poke yoke does not entail any rocket science - sometimes it just needs common
sense and the appropriate poka yoke device. Poka yoke devices should have the following characteristics:

Useable by all workers, Simple to install, Does not require continuous attention from the operator (ideally, it should work even if the operator is not aware of it),
Low-cost, Provides instantaneous feedback, prevention, or correction. A lot of Shingo's poka yoke devices cost less than £50!

Three levels of Poka-Yoke:

1) Elimination of spills, leaks, losses at the source or prevention of a mistake from being committed.
2) Detection of a loss or mistake as it occurs, allowing correction before it becomes a problem.
3) Detection of a loss or mistake after it has occurred, just in time before it blows up into a major issue (least effective).

Process mapping refers to activities involved in defining exactly what a business entity does, who is responsible, to what standard a process should be completed
and how the success of a business process can be determined. Once this is done, there can be no uncertainty as to the requirements of every internal business
process. A business process illustration is produced. The first step in gaining control over an organisation is to know and understand the basic processes.

In order that business processes can be improved they must first be illustrated. The hardest task in business process
mapping is getting everyone to agree what the process looks like. The starting point is an illustration of the process.
The production of a process illustration is an continual activity. The more widely circulated the draft illustrations then the
more accurate the final, first off, illustration. A form of business process illustration is the flow-chart.

A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as boxes of various kinds, and
their order by connecting these with arrows. This diagrammatic representation can give a step-by-step solution to a given
problem. Data is represented in these boxes, and arrows connecting them represent flow / direction of flow of data.
Flowcharts are used in analysing, designing, documenting or managing a process or program in various fields.

GHC facilitates customers with the ability to map, model and manage company processes in order to obtain a better understanding of how specific goals can be
achieved. GHC’s process mapping encompasses management techniques that are often confused with workflow automation, but really its extent is much more far-
reaching and can be as fine-grained as managing the daily activities of employees, or as coarse-grained as taking a top-level perspective in the orchestration of
entire departments and projects.

What Is the Main Objective of this Approach?
 The DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control) is the classic Six Sigma problem-solving process. Traditionally, the approach is applied to a problem with an
existing, steady-state process or product and/or service offering. Variation is the enemy—variation from customer specifications
in either a product or process is the primary problem. Variation can take on many forms. DMAIC resolves issues of defects or failures, deviation from a target,
excess cost or time, and deterioration. This approach reduces variation within and across the value-adding steps in a process. DMAIC identifies key requirements,
deliverables, tasks, and standard tools for a project team to utilise when tackling a problem. The DMAIC approach is designed to allow for flexibility and iterative
work, if necessary. As more is learned through the 5-step process, assumptions or hypotheses as to the root cause of the problem may be disproved, requiring the
project team to revisit them and modify or to explore alternative possibilities.
DMAIC builds on three fundamental principles:
• Results-focused, driven by data, facts, and metrics.
• Work is project-based (short-term in nature, with length depending upon scope and complexity) and project-structured, versus an on-going process.
• Inherent combination of tools-tasks-deliverables linkage that varies by step in the method.
During this workshop GHC will introduce the team to data gathering activities and the various tools and techniques used to gather the required data used in process
performance improvement activities.
 What is Data Collection?
Data Collection helps your team to assess the health of your process. To do so, you must identify the key quality characteristics you will measure, how you will
measure them, and what you will do with the data you collect. What exactly is a key quality characteristic? It is a characteristic of the product or service produced
by a process that customers have determined is important to them. Data Collection is nothing more than planning for and obtaining useful information on key
quality characteristics produced by your process . However, simply collecting data does not ensure that you will obtain relevant or specific enough data to tell you
what is occurring in your process. The key issue is not: How do we collect data? Rather, it is: How do we obtain useful data? GHC will guide your people through the
data collection process and obtain meaningful data to use within the process mapping activity.

What is Total Productive Maintenance ( TPM ) ?

Manual Handling injuries are the cause of most lost working days in the UK, with sprains and strains due to the incorrect lifting and moving of objects causing
most suffering to employees.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent Regulations require that employees are provided with information and training and this general
requirement should be supplemented with specific training and information on manual handling.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations do not set any weight limits for lifting and carrying loads and amendments in 2002 clearly now require employees
to have adequate or appropriate knowledge or training. The Regulations will apply to nearly all work activities from offices to care homes and factories. There

This is a small introductory course which will give a threshold status to teach. It will be mandatory for any new teacher who teaches publicly funded provision.
Those for whom teaching/tutoring/training is their major role, will be required to progress to a further qualification appropriate to role.

The Level 3 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (QCF) (PTTLS) is the minimum requirement for those in their first year of teaching in the

This qualification is ideal for those entering the teaching industry. It is also ideal for anyone currently teaching or wishing to teach their subject specialism. If
you are a trainer involved in providing funded Work Based Learning (WBL), you may also be required to obtain PTLLS in order to satisfy funding requirements.

Poka Yoke is a quality management concept developed by a manufacturing engineer named Shigeo Shingo to prevent human errors from occurring in the production line. Poka yoke comes from two Japanese words – ‘yokeru’ which means “to avoid”, and ‘poka’ which means ‘inadvertent errors’. Thus, poka yoke more or less translates to ‘avoiding inadvertent errors’ The main objective of poke yoke is to achieve zero defects. In fact, it is just one of the many components of Shingo’s Zero Quality Control (ZQC) system, the goal of which is to eliminate defective products. Poka yoke is more of a concept than a procedure. Thus, its implementation is governed by what people think they can do to prevent errors in their workplace, and not by a set of step-by-step instructions on how they should do their job. Poka yoke is implemented by using simple objects like fixtures, jigs, gadgets, warning devices, paper systems, and the like to prevent people from committing mistakes, even if they try to! These objects, known as poka yoke devices, are usually used to stop the machine and alert the operator if something is about to go wrong. Anybody can and should practice poka yoke in the workplace. Poke yoke does not entail any rocket science - sometimes it just needs common sense and the appropriate poka yoke device. Poka yoke devices should have the following characteristics: Useable by all workers, Simple to install, Does not require continuous attention from the operator (ideally, it should work even if the operator is not aware of it), Low-cost, Provides instantaneous feedback, prevention, or correction. A lot of Shingo's poka yoke devices cost less than £50! Three levels of Poka-Yoke: 1) Elimination of spills, leaks, losses at the source or prevention of a mistake from being committed. 2) Detection of a loss or mistake as it occurs, allowing correction before it becomes a problem. 3) Detection of a loss or mistake after it has occurred, just in time before it blows up into a major issue (least effective). Process mapping refers to activities involved in defining exactly what a business entity does, who is responsible, to what standard a process should be completed and how the success of a business process can be determined. Once this is done, there can be no uncertainty as to the requirements of every internal business process. A business process illustration is produced. The first step in gaining control over an organisation is to know and understand the basic processes. In order that business processes can be improved they must first be illustrated. The hardest task in business process mapping is getting everyone to agree what the process looks like. The starting point is an illustration of the process. The production of a process illustration is an continual activity. The more widely circulated the draft illustrations then the more accurate the final, first off, illustration. A form of business process illustration is the flow-chart. A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as boxes of various kinds, and their order by connecting these with arrows. This diagrammatic representation can give a step-by-step solution to a given problem. Data is represented in these boxes, and arrows connecting them represent flow / direction of flow of data. Flowcharts are used in analysing, designing, documenting or managing a process or program in various fields. GHC facilitates customers with the ability to map, model and manage company processes in order to obtain a better understanding of how specific goals can be achieved. GHC’s process mapping encompasses management techniques that are often confused with workflow automation, but really its extent is much more far- reaching and can be as fine-grained as managing the daily activities of employees, or as coarse-grained as taking a top-level perspective in the orchestration of entire departments and projects. The DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control) is the classic Six Sigma problem-solving process. Traditionally, the approach is applied to a problem with an existing, steady-state process or product and/or service offering. Variation is the enemy—variation from customer specifications in either a product or process is the primary problem. Variation can take on many forms. DMAIC resolves issues of defects or failures, deviation from a target, excess cost or time, and deterioration. This approach reduces variation within and across the value-adding steps in a process. DMAIC identifies key requirements, deliverables, tasks, and standard tools for a project team to utilise when tackling a problem. The DMAIC approach is designed to allow for flexibility and iterative work, if necessary. As more is learned through the 5-step process, assumptions or hypotheses as to the root cause of the problem may be disproved, requiring the project team to revisit them and modify or to explore alternative possibilities. DMAIC builds on three fundamental principles: • Results-focused, driven by data, facts, and metrics. • Work is project-based (short-term in nature, with length depending upon scope and complexity) and project-structured, versus an on-going process. • Inherent combination of tools-tasks-deliverables linkage that varies by step in the method. During this workshop GHC will introduce the team to data gathering activities and the various tools and techniques used to gather the required data used in process performance improvement activities. What is Data Collection? Data Collection helps your team to assess the health of your process. To do so, you must identify the key quality characteristics you will measure, how you will measure them, and what you will do with the data you collect. What exactly is a key quality characteristic? It is a characteristic of the product or service produced by a process that customers have determined is important to them. Data Collection is nothing more than planning for and obtaining useful information on key quality characteristics produced by your process . However, simply collecting data does not ensure that you will obtain relevant or specific enough data to tell you what is occurring in your process. The key issue is not: How do we collect data? Rather, it is: How do we obtain useful data? GHC will guide your people through the data collection process and obtain meaningful data to use within the process mapping activity. It can be considered as the ‘medical science of machines’. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a maintenance program which involves a newly defined concept for maintaining plants and equipment. The goal of the TPM program is to markedly increase production while, at the same time, increasing employee morale and job satisfaction. TPM brings maintenance into focus as a necessary and vitally important part of the business. It is no longer regarded as a non-profit activity. Down time for maintenance is scheduled as a part of the manufacturing day and in some cases, as an integral part of the manufacturing process. The goal is to hold emergency and unscheduled maintenance to a minimum. Why TPM ? ELECTRONIC CATALOGUE Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (QCF) Manual Handling injuries are the cause of most lost working days in the UK, with sprains and strains due to the incorrect lifting and moving of objects causing most suffering to employees. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and subsequent Regulations require that employees are provided with information and training and this general requirement should be supplemented with specific training and information on manual handling. It will be mandatory for any new teacher who teaches publicly funded provision.
