http://www.personal.psu.edu/mvf5034/nikebasketball.jpg Hi class, We are now starting our week about basketball. In the next hour, I will be going over just the basics of basketball. Take note of the key terms that I point out in the following slides. Through out the week we will be practicing these skill, and then come next week we will have a written test on it.
Basketball was invented in 1891 by a 30 year old man named, Dr. James Naismith The game was originally played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets Through out the years the rules have been changed or altered to make a better game and more suiting rules
In basketball you are either on offense or defense
Tries to ‘defend’ the ball so that the offense does not score a basket Cannot hit, slap, kick, hold, or make any contact with the opposing team
When a basket is made within the three point line, it is two points. When a basket is made outside the three point line, it is three points A free throw is one point. A free throw shot happens when a player is fouled (A defense man come in illegal contact with a player who has possession of the basketball.
Basketball is a very fast paced game, and the players do get tired fairly quickly. There are unlimited substitutions where one player comes in to play, and one player who was on the court, comes out to take a break. http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/hxCHlxiB4CZ/Olympics+Day+4+Basketball/Y1_QvhZQINa/Jason+Kidd
Must dribble the ball to move from a spot. This would be an example of traveling; taking steps with out dribbling http://cdn1.sbnation.com/entry_photo_images/998320/dawn_evans_dribbling_large.jpg
The basketball hoop must be 10 feet in the air from the ground. The court is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/10/100059/1472102-basketball__mario_sports_mix__large.png
