CIRCLE OF LIFE - As an oldster, the biggest job I have to do today is to attend the senior care center for
the second day of the week. It is indeed comforting to see my age group where all they can think of is
food, and good food.
There is a lot of laughter about silly matters, which compensates for the loss of my minimal
dancing ability. It provides a boon to my breathing organ which I consider valuable. The right exercise of
the body as well as the mind (crossword puzzle or alphabet groupings) should also be beneficial to
mental health in general, although I notice that some of my less older friends keep falling asleep.
The Filipino-American group was greeted with enthusiasm when once we sang to the Korean-
American group “God Bless America” followed by “You are My Sunshine”. We had to stand up of course
and face them while singing. I guess that was the reason why we won, remembering that the six other
groups did theirs in a sitting position around each of their tables. It did not matter that we did not
understand a word they sang.
The prize awarded to each of us seven members present, were a few coins for the Laundromat.
Thanks to God for that. That is the reason I want to recall other songs more sophisticated than we
delivered. Those of the sixties for instance. Perchance we might win something more valuable. But we
need to practice.
I can say that I am a number one fan of beautiful songs. But the tragedy is, songs cannot agree
with me, that sometimes I feel my singing should be confined in the bathroom. I would prefer listening
to others, especially to someone whom I love next to our Lord. If ever I do sing again, it is for the
purpose of encouraging the members to take part in enlivening the center’s effort, something they
appreciate. After all, with each of us nurturing one or more infirmities (two are recovering from strokes),
the desire to take part is certainly laudable, but I suppose no one should expect us to excel.
