Child Abuse: It Shouldn’t Hurt to Be A Kid
What is Child Abuse? You might have a picture in your head about what child abused is. Child abuse happens when an adult mistreats or neglects a child. The person who abuses is misusing their position of trust and authority. This could be a parent, guardian, paid caregiver or sibling. When it happens, it can affect all kinds of kids, no matter where they live, how much money their families have or who they live with.
What Form Does Child Abuse Take There are four main type of abusing. Neglect Physical Abuse Sexual Abuse Emotional Abuse
Physical Abuse Physical abuse means inflicting physical harm on a child's body. For example: shaking, hitting, beating, burning, biting a child.
Sexual Abuse This happens when an adult or adolescent uses a child for sexual purposes. It can also mean exposing them to sexual activity or behaviour. It can include: incest any forced sexual activity exposure to sexual stimulation not appropriate for the child's age.
Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse includes other acts that can harm a child's sense of worth. It is usually part of a long-term problem. It harms a child's self-confidence when an adult insults, rejects or humiliates them often. Other examples of emotional abuse include: constantly blaming putting down a child excessive yelling shaming.
Neglect Neglect means not giving the child what they need to develop. It can hurt the child both emotionally and physically. a pattern of failure to provide for the child's physical needs, such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; a pattern of failure to provide for the child's emotional needs, such as affection, attention, and supervision.

How to Stop It? Help out a parent under stress with a few hours of child care or assistance with other chores. Lend an ear to a parent or child in crisis. Support programs that offer child care, parent education, family counseling, and child safety. Call a Parental Stress program for resources and support.
