2. Había
una vez
un árbol...
Once upon a time,
there was a tree...
3. Que amaba a
un pequeño niño.
That loved
a little boy.
4. Y todos los días
el niño
venía
Every day
the boy
would come.
16. Y poco a poco, el árbol se
fue quedando solo.
So the tree became lonely.
17. Pero un día,
al árbol vió venir
a su niño y le dijo:
Then one day the tree saw the boy coming and
told him:
“Ven, Niño, súbete a mi tronco y mécete en mis
ramas y come mis manzanas y juega bajo mi sobra y
sé feliz”.
“Boy, come and climb up my trunk,
swing from my branches, eat my apples,
play in my shade and be happy”.
“Ya soy muy grande para trepar y jugar”,
dijo el chico.
The boy said: “I am too big to
climb up and play”.
18. “Yo quiero comprar
cosas y divertirme,
y para ello necesito dinero.
¿Tú podrías darmelo?”
“I want to buy things and have fun. I need some
money. Could you give me some?”
“Lo siento”, dijo el árbol,“pero yo no tengo dinero”.
“I’m sorry”, said the tree, “I haven’t got
any”.
“Sólo tengo hojas y manzanas”. Pero...
“I only have got leaves and apples”. But...
“Llevate mis manzanas, niño, y véndelas en la
ciudad. Así tendrás dinero y serás feliz”.
”Take my apples, sell them in the city.
Then you will get some money
and you will be happy.”
19. Entonces el niño
trepó al árbol, arrancó sus
manzanas y se las llevó con él.
So the boy climbed up the tree,
gathered its apples
and carried them away.
Y el árbol se sintió feliz.
The tree felt happy.
20. Pero pasó mucho tiempo y
su niño no volvía...
The boy didn’t come back
for a long time...
y el árbol estaba triste.
and the tree felt terribly sad.
One day the boy came back and
the tree shook whith joy and said:
“Ven, Niño, trepa a mi tronco, mécete en
mis ramas y sé feliz”. “Come boy, climb up
my trunk, swing from my branches
and be happy.”
21. “Yo estoy demasiado ocupado
para trepar árboles”, dijo él. “I am too
busy to climb up trees”, said the boy.
“Necesito una casa que me sirva de abrigo, pues
quiero una esposa e hijos, y para eso necesito
una casa. ¿Puedes tú darmela? ”
“I need a home to keep me warm” he said.
“I want a wife and children, that is why I need
a home. Can you give me one?”
“Yo no tengo una casa”, dijo el árbol.“El bosque
es mi hogar, pero tú puedes cortar mis ramas
y hacerte con ellas una casa para tu familia”.
“I’ve got one”, said the tree. “The forest
is my home, but you may cut off all my
branches and build yours for your family”.
“Entonces serás feliz”.
“Then you will be happy”.
22. Y, así, él cortó sus ramas
y se las llevó con él para
construir su casa.
And so he did,
he cut off all
its branches,
and carried them
away to build
his home.
23. Y, el árbol,
se sintió feliz.
The tree felt happy.
The boy didn’t came back for a long time.
So when he return, the tree was so
happy it could hardly speak.
“Ven Niño”, dijo con un susurro. “Ven y juega”.
“Come boy”, it whispered, “come and play”.
“Estoy muy viejo y triste para jugar”, dijo él.
“I am too old and sad to play”, said the boy.
“Quiero un barco que me lleve lejos de aquí.
¿Puedes tu darme un barco?”
“I want a boat to take me away from here.
Could you give me one?”
25. “Corta mi tronco y constrúyete un barco”,
dijo el árbol.
“Entonces podrás navegar
hacia lugares lejanos...
y serás feliz”.
“Cut down my trunk and make it”,
said the tree.
“Then you can sail away...
and be happy.”
26. El niño cortó el tronco del árbol.
And so the boy did, it cut its trunk down.
Construyó con él un barco y
navegó hacia lugares lejanos.
Built the boat and sailed away.
27. Y el árbol se sintió feliz...
And the tree was happy...
pero no realmente.
but not really.
The boy came back again after a long time.
“Lo lamento, Niño”, dijo el árbol,
“pero ya no tengo nada que darte”.
“I am sorry, boy”, said the tree,
“I have nothing left to give you”.
29. “Ya no me quedan manzanas”. “My apples are gone”.
“Mis dientes son muy débiles para comer manzanas”- le contestó.
“My teeth are too weak for apples”, said the boy.
“Ya no me quedan ramas”–dijo el árbol,“ya no podrás mecerte en ellas”.
“My branches are gone”, said the tree.“You cannot swing from them”.
“Estoy muy viejo para columpiarme en las ramas” – respondió él.
“I am too old to swing from branches” , said the boy.
“Mi tronco ya no está, no podrás treparlo” – dijo el árbol.
“My trunk is gone” , said the tree. “You cannot climb up”.
“Estoy muy cansado para trepar” - le contestó.
“I am too tired to climb up” , said the boy.
“Lo siento” – se lamentó el árbol. “Ojalá pudiera darte
algo... pero ya no me queda nada.
“I am sorry” , sighed the tree. “I wish I could give
you something... but I have nothing
left to give”.
“Soy solo un viejo tocón. Lo siento..”
“I am just an old stump. I am sorry...”
30. “Yo no necesito mucho ahora”, contestó él, “solo un lugar
tranquilo donde sentarme y descansar.
“I don´t need very much now” , said the boy, “just a quiet
place to sit down and rest”.
“Estoy muy cansado”. “I am too tired”.
“Bien”, dijo el árbol reanimándose y se
enderezó tanto como pudo. “Si es así,
un tronco cortado y viejo es bueno
para sentarse y descansar”.
“Fine”, said the tree, encouraging itself and
straightening as much as it could,
“well, an old stump is good
for sitting and resting”.
“Ven niño, siéntate. Siéntate y descansa”.
“Come, boy, sit down. Sit down and rest”.
Y él se sentó. And so the boy did.
31. Y el árbol fue feliz.
And the tree was happy.
