The Panoramic Camera

• “ The lens used to make the photograph is also the viewing lens and movable mirror
permits both of these functions without having to remove the plate or film”.3
• This allows photojournalists to have a camera with a functional lens, making their
job easier. Also the camera gave photojournalists better quality images.

The Stereoscope Viewer
• The stereoscope viewer was invented by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1861. 1
• This viewer allowed photojournalists to enlarge photos and makes objects
    appear larger and more distant.

Kodak Roll-Film Camera
• The Kodak roll-film camera was invented by George Eastman in 1888.2
• Eastman invented this camera to help photojournalists have a “cheap and
    simple” camera available.1

The Raisecamera
• The Raisecamera, travel camera, was invented by German Reise in 1900.1
• This camera allowed a more travelable camera for photojournalists so they can
be more mobile for their job. “Extreme light weight and small dimensions
when it is folded made this photo camera most desirable thing”.1

 The Sony Mavica introduced by
            Sony2

             1978
       The Konica C35AF
      invented by Konica1

            1948
     The Polaroid camera
   invented by Edwin Land1

          1913/1914
    The first 35mm camera
      invented by Oskar
           Barnack1
The First 35mm Camera
• The first 35mm camera, also known as the “candid camera” was invented by
    Oskar Barnack in 1913/1914.1
• This camera made photojournalists have a camera that was mobile with
quality images. It also revolutionized photojournalism by allowing
photographers to “take indoor exposures with available light, and candid
photographs on the fly” making the photographer’s job quick and simple. 4

The Polaroid Camera
• The Polaroid Camera was invented by Edwin Land in 1948.1
• This camera gave photojournalists the ability to “take a picture and print it in
about one minute”. 1 This affected photojournalists by being able to see their
    photographs quicker and easier.

The Konica C35 AF
• The Konica C35 AF was introduced in 1978 by Konica. 1
• It is the first point-and-shoot, autofocus. It was also named “Jasupin”.1
• This camera allowed photojournalists to take better quality images by having
the ability to autofocus. Also the smallness of the camera made
photojournalists have less bulky equipment and be more mobile.

The Sony Mavica
• Sony introduced the Sony Mavica in 1981.2
• This camera was the world’s first digital electric still camera.2
• The digital camera revolutionized photojournalists by being able to view
images instantly after they are taken. No waiting for film to develop allows
their job to be faster and easier.

             2005
The Canon EOS 5D launched by
            Canon1

          1994/1996
    The first digital camera
    available for consumer-
         level markets2

              1991
     The first professional
   digital camera released by
             Kodak2

            1986
    The disposable camera
     introduced by Fuji1
The First Disposable Camera
• Fuji introduced the first disposable camera in 1986. 1
• The disposable camera was not a first choice for photojournalists, but they
were available for single use. Also they were a much more cheaper option for
    photojournalists.

The First Professional Digital Camera
• Kodak released the first professional digital camera system (DCS) in 1991.2
• It was a modified Nikon F-3 camera with a 1.3 megapixel sensor.
• This camera was a great use for photojournalists for having the available viewer on
the camera. Not needing film added less equipment and saved much more time. The
problem for them was when this camera first came out it was very expensive.

The First Consumer-Market Digital
                 Camera
• “The first digital cameras for the consumer-level market that worked with a
home computer via a serial cable were the Apple QuickTake 100 camera
    (February 17 , 1994), the Kodak DC40 camera (March 28, 1995), the Casio QV-
11 (with LCD monitor, late 1995), and Sony’s Cyber-Shot Digital Still Camera
    (1996)”.2
• This camera allowed photojournalists the ability to upload their photographs
on to their home computers. They can now work and edit their photos at their
    home.

The Canon EOS 5D
• The Canon EOS 5D was launched in 2005 by Canon. “This is first consumer-
    priced full-frame digital SLR with a 24x36mm CMOS sensor”.1
• The price of the camera allowed photojournalists to be able to afford a digital
camera. Again this camera brought a simpler and quicker way to develop and
look at their images. It also gave photographers more opportunities to shoot
being more mobile as well as photographers being able to edit their work using
their computer and looking on to the camera’s screen.
