The Qualities of Isaac Newton Mind Map
1.
2. The Qualities of Isaac Newton
This mind map explores some of the qualities of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) whose discoveries included the invention
of the reflecting telescope, calculus, the laws of motion, the theory of universal gravitation and an explanation of colour
and the rainbow.
I have drawn inspiration for the mind map from the book “Newton’s Notebook”, full details of which appear below should
you wish to discover more about Sir Isaac Newton. I have identified four key areas: exploration, experiment, approach
and enquiries. I endeavoured to keep it simple so that the qualities may carry over to any field of interest.
Exploration
Newton was largely self-taught and self-educated. Through dedication, single-mindedness and focus he pursued a life of
self-discovery and exploration that helped uncover many inventions and scientific laws.
Experiment
Fond of constructing gadgets and devices Newton had a hands-on and practical side often building and toying with
devices, and inventing models both mechanical and otherwise. He also captured and expanded his ideas by creating
sketches, developing drawings and making extensive notes.
Approach
Newton recorded his thoughts in notebooks and pocketbooks, well aware of the possibility of losing good ideas if he did
not do so. He had a meticulous and systematic approach to organising and categorising information, knowledge,
experiments and ideas. Blending curiosity and exploration with silence and solitude, Newton practised the ideal
combination for ideation and innovation. Exploration, incubation and reflection.
Enquiries
Newton learnt from those before him, by studying and reading. He would question and challenge assumptions and
expand on existing knowledge, both his own and that of others.
So there you have it; four simple areas for curiosity and learning from Isaac Newton to help you unlock new discoveries
that may change the world.
Perhaps you might leave a legacy like Newton?
3. Quotes:
“To explain all nature is too difficult a task for any one man or even any one age. Tis much better to do a little with
certainty and leave the rest for others that come after you”
“Truth is the offspring of silence and meditation”
