Priorities of the PPR Panel

  Luc Mohimont - Pesticides Unit

   ECPA-IBMA workshop with EFSA
     26th April 2012, Parma Italy
                                    1
The PPR Panel is a body of the Authority and is
responsible for providing the scientific opinions of the
Authority.

21 Members appointed for a 3-year mandate, which can be
renewed twice.

Supported by WG including external experts with ad-hoc
expertise.

Independence policy.

                                                           2
Article 29 of the General Food Law:

The authority shall issue a scientific opinion:
(a) At the request of the Commission, in respect of any
matter within its mission, and in all cases where
Community legislation makes the provision for the
    authority to be consulted
(b) On its own initiative, on matters falling within its mission.

The EU Parliament or a Member State may request the
Authority to issue a scientific opinion.
                                                                    3
All requests for opinions have to state clearly the Terms of
Reference to be addressed and the deadline to adopt the
output.

All requests need to be approved by the Mandate Review
Committee of EFSA before being processed.

Negotiation of the deadline possible with the Commission
taking into account:
 Level of priority
 Extent of the mandate and existing resources
 The existence of new scientific elements
                                                               4
