Netiquette Etiquette for the Internet
Golden Rules of Etiquette Treat others as you want to be treated No “Flaming” or disrespect towards others Respect Copyrights Don’t type in all caps Don’t spam people Be truthful Use proper grammar Follow the terms of service agreement (TOS) Keep it PG-13 Research your information before posting
Copyright and Fair Use The definition of copyright is this: The legal right given to an writer, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to restricted work of art, creation, sale, or sharing of a literary, musical, dramatic, or artistic work. For more information on copyright laws for kids go www.copyrightkids.org/ For now, lets watch the following video by Disney to learn more about copyright and fair use.
Plagiarism The definition of plagiarism is using someone else’s words or thoughts and using them as your own. Whether you mean to or not, if you do not cite what you use, your guilty of plagiarism. Examples of plagiarism are: Copying someone elses paper Taking a quote from someone without citing them as the person who said it.
Safety on the Web It is important to remember to be safe on the web. We live in a scary world and not everyone in the world is nice. The following websites have more information for safety on the web. www.CableClickSmart.org www.InternetSafety.com Please watch the next few videos about safety on the web.
Safety on the Web-Tips for Kids Do not give out information about you without parent's permission, such as:Address                                                               Parent's Work Address  	Social SecurityNumber                 	Financial InstitutionAccountNumbersParent's Work Telephone Telephone NumberName of Your SchoolLocation of Your School If you see information you do not understand or makes you feel nervous let your teacher or parents know. Never agree to meet someone or have them visit you without letting your parents know and checking it out with them. If a meeting is okay with everyone, be sure you are in public and someone is with you.
Safety on the Web Continued Never gives someone a photo of you or your family that you do not know. If you receive an instant message (IM) or e-mail that you are have a bad feeling about, let a teacher or parent know. Receiving a message of that makes you uncomfortable is not your fault. Ask for a family meeting to set guidelines for computer and internet use. When can you use it and for how long? Other than to your parents never give out your password(s) - even to your best friends. Be a netizen = a good online citizen. Do not do anything that is not allowed or to hurt others. Do not do anything that your parents have to pay for unless your parents give you permission. If you do not recognize or trust an e-mail, attachment, file, or web page don’t open it. Keep in mind that people on the net may not be who they say they are. Someone who says that they are a 13 year old could really be an older man or woman. If you have not met the person you have been communicating with online, Face-To-Face, then you DO NOT KNOW THAT PERSON.
Safety on Your Computer Kids. in order to keep your computer safe you need to give these these tips to your parents: 1. Update your operating system (OS)2. Always install anti-virus software and updates from trusted software3. Use an anti-spyware/adware program4. Make sure your home network is protected5. Make sure a firewall is on your computer6. Don't use Internet Explorer. It is the most commonly used browser, so it is the least safe. Mozilla Firefox is a great one to download.7. Keep an eye out for email attachments.8. Open a domain name system9. Be careful with unsafe websites10. Keep your personal information safe
