Music video Analysis
1. Music Video Analysis
The music videos uses of a group rebellious male teens are its central characters. There are
numerous close-up shots of the artist as he performs throughout the video there is a clear
relationship between the music and the visuals
e.g. “...I’ll be stuck at Hampton Wick”, “Hold three fingers down, hold the other two up...”
There is also a clear link between the beat of the song and the editing.
Jamie T is clearly seen as the leader of the group
In terms of the type of video
Performance & Narrative :
There is no live audience. The video is split between Jamie
apparently performing, and then engaged in his other antics.
Jamie is lip synching and rapping in time to the soundtrack,
although we see no evidence of any other musical
instruments or input.
The video is split between Jamie apparently performing, and then engaged in his
other behaviour. The song itself contains a number of scenes that illustrate in part
through the visuals e.g. being taunted at the station.
2. → Artistic:
Clown:
• Appears in a haze of smoke at the start and end
• At first glance to have no connection at all with the largely 'urban realist' nature of the lyrics
and song, and which can be read in a number of ways. Is Jamie himself the clown, slightly
mocking comic character rather than the stereotypical male teen of today’s society?
• May be to generate some colour and visual interest in a video which is otherwise rather grey
and dull in its depiction of suburban life. Jamie may be representing the reality of his day to
day life.
Lyrical content - going out fighting etc: 'vandalism' depicted in the video could lead to Jamie's
image being misinterpreted.
The way in which the video has been made appears to be ‘home-made’ due to the deliberate
use of the handheld camera. Much like the editing this successfully creates the effect of a DIY
music video.
The cheap looking effects of the everyday, non-glamorous locations add an authentic overview,
which gives the sense that Jamie is singing about the things that have happened in his life.
3. We also see how Jamie is marketed via his image :
• He is not represented like typical music videos are where the artist is lit perfectly and
expertly shot, Jamie's image is much more 'real' and down to earth, emphasising the
character created: one of the boys out with his mates having a good time.
• He at times deliberately makes himself look bad, because this is part of the
REPRESENTATION that he is trying to create e.g. vandalism: smashing of glass.
