3. What is a Sitemap?
A site map is a list of pages of a web site
accessible to crawlers or users.
It can be either a document in any form used as
a planning tool for Web design, or a Web page
that lists the pages on a Web site, typically
organized in hierarchical fashion.
There are two popular versions of a site map.
• An XML Sitemap is a structured format
that a user doesn't need to see,
but it tells the search engine about the
pages in your site.
• HTML sitemaps are designed for the
user to help them find content on
the page. This helps visitors and
search engine find pages on the site.
4. Purpose of a Sitemap
• A sitemap is a website design planning tool. It is used to:
• Map out the site architecture*
• Structure
• Navigation
• Page hierarchy;
– Categorise the site content into logical groups, which will have
meaning for the user;
– Organise the order of the pages of the site, to create logical paths (so
that targeted users achieve the purpose of their visit);
