Symptoms of a UTI may vary depending on age, sex and the location of the infection
(urethra, bladder, kidneys). Occasionally a person may have a UTI and have no outward
symptoms.
Probably the most common symptom among people who have outward signs of a UTI is a
frequent urge to urinate along with pain or burning during urination. Also, many patients
report an urge to urinate with an inability to do so.
In addition to frequent urge, urine may appear discolored or cloudy and may have a foul
odor. The urine may also appear brown or reddish if blood is present in the urine.
Some symptoms specific to women may include a vaginal discharge, especially if the
urethra is infected. Women may also complain of abdominal pain or have a bloated feeling
as though their bladder is full.
In men, the most common symptoms are dysuria (pain during urination) other symptoms
can include penile, rectal, or testicular discomfort. Men who have a infection in the urethra
may have a pus-like drip from the penis. Children with a UTI are more likely to exhibit blood
in the urine and may also have vomiting and fever.
Diagnosing a UTI in the elderly may be more difficult than in healthy adults and children.
Unfortunately the elderly frequently will not have severe symptoms until the infection has
progressed significantly.
Sometimes the specific type of symptom can help identify the location of the infection. For
example, dysuria (pain during urination) is typically an indicator of a urethral infection. If
there is a pus like fluid draining from the penis or vagina, a STD infection is likely. If the
infection is a bladder infection symptoms usually include pain the pubic area along with
what is often called “flank pain” which is pain in the lower back, usually on one side. These
symptoms aren’t 100% accurate but can help you estimate the location of the infection.
