Minister’s Welcome 1
As Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing I am delighted to welcome you
to the Oceania Track Cycling Championships.
Message from the Honorable Michael Wright MP
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing
The State Government is proud to host this
premier track cycling event at the Adelaide
Super Drome. I also acknowledge the
support of Cycling Australia and Cycling
SA, and the many volunteers who make
this event possible.
Once again South Australians have an
opportunity to see some of the fastest
cyclists in the world compete in our world
class Super-Drome, which is also home
to the Australian Institute of Sport’s Track
Cycling program that performed so well at
the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
South Australia is a proud cycling state
with other events such as the Tour Down
Under in January, and the Mountain Bike
Championships at Eagle MTB Park in
February, providing further opportunities
to see the fastest and most skilled riders in
Australia and the world compete on and
off-road.
I hope all competitors, visitors and
spectators to this year’s Oceania Track
Cycling Championships enjoy South
Australia’s wonderful hospitality, and I wish
all competitors the very best of luck in your
respective events.
Michael Wright MP
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing
3. OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
President’s Welcome2
Welcome from Mike Turtur OAM
President of the Oceania Cycling Confederation
On behalf of the Oceania Cycling Confederation I wish to welcome you all
back to Adelaide and the Super-Drome.
These Oceania Championships form part
of the selection criteria for the London
Olympics, so more than ever they are very
important to nations and athletes. Oceania
cyclists have again in recent times excelled
with some incredible sporting performances
at world level. The staging of the highly
successful UCI Road World Championships
in Victoria was a historic moment for our
region and we look forward to other World
Championships in the near future with the
2012 UCI Track World Championship in
Melbourne and the 2012 UCI Junior Track
World Championships in Invercargill.
Following these Championship we head to
Melbourne for the UCI World Track Cup
round which will continue the qualifying
period for London.
As President I am very proud of the fact
that athletes from our region continue
to perform at a very high level, these
performances can be traced back to the
extremely successful high performance
programs in both Australia and New
Zealand. It is pleasing to see that in all
disciplines from both countries continue to
turn out athletes who have performed with
distinction all over the world.
The Oceania Cycling Confederation
introduced this year a new development
program under the guidance of Vice
President Development Mike Victor with the
aim of increasing the number of member
countries in our region. With support from
the UCI we have had some exciting progress
in our region and are confident that by the
end of 2011 we will have new members of
Oceania registered. The program is critical
in securing the future of our sport in the
region and increasing participation.
Finally, I wish to thank the staff of Cycling
Australia, Cycling South Australia, the South
Australian Office for Recreation and Sport,
the Adelaide Super-Drome and all sponsors
for making this series possible, I am sure
we will witness fantastic racing with record
performances across the board.
I extend to all athletes and officials best
wishes for the series and hope that your
preparation delivers the performances you
are striving to achieve.

Guide to Events
Sprint
The sprint is one of the oldest cycling
events making its first appearance at World
Championships in Chicago in 1893. It is a
classic short distance event in which two
or more riders cover three laps. Only the
final 200 metres is timed and the winner
is the first across the line. Sprinters must
be strong and fast but the key to success
is tactics. Sudden and dramatic changes
in pace, standstill attempts and feints are
typical ways to try and outwit an opponent.
Riders obtain a seeding through the
qualifying 200 metre flying time trial and
from then on race head to head.
Individual Time Trial
The time trial is a race against the clock
with no room for error. The difference
between gold and silver can be as little as a
thousandth of a second. The bike is locked
in a starting gate and riders must time their
first pedal stroke to match the gate release.
From the standing start they must quickly
get up to maximum speed and maintain it
for the distance.
Keirin
Keirin was created in the 1940’s and is the
Japanese version of the traditional sprint
event. Up to seven riders compete over
2000m. A special motorised bike called
a derny leads the field for the first 5½
laps starting at 30km/h and bringing the
riders up to a speed of 50km/h (25km/h to
45km/h for women). Cyclists manoeuvre for
the best position before the derny leaves
the track. Then the battle of strength,
speed and courage begins.
Teams Sprint
Two teams of three riders (two riders for
women) race each other and the clock.
The lead rider on each team must get out
of the gate cleanly and bring the team up
to speed as fast as possible. After one lap
it’s the turn of the next rider to put in the
effort and for the final lap only one rider
remains.
Individual Pursuit
The individual pursuit is an endurance
event and is conducted as a knock out
tournament. The goal is to ride the fastest
time over the distance. The fastest two
riders in the qualifying round race in
the gold medal final and the next two
fastest contest the bronze medal final. In
qualifying all riders complete the distance
to post a time but in the finals if a rider
overtakes their opponent they are declared
the winner.
Scratch Race
The scratch race begins with a massed
start and the first rider across the line wins.
Tactics are important in this event, with
endurance riders keeping the pace fast
and furious from the gun in an effort to
eliminate the specialist sprinters, who in
turn will try and shelter within the group to
conserve their strength in the final placings.

Guide to Events 5
Points Race
This is an event where the final placings
are determined according to accumulated
points won by riders during sprints or by
taking laps on their opponents. Points
(5,3,2,1) are awarded to the first four
across the line in the intermediate sprints,
every ten laps and at the finish. 20 points
are given to a rider who laps the main field
and any rider who drops a lap on the main
field loses 20 points. At the end of the race
if two or more riders are equal on points
the places in the final sprint determine who
wins. Speed, endurance, concentration and
ability to read the race and react quickly are
all found in a successful points rider.
Teams Pursuit
This is a true test of technique and
teamwork. Four cyclists (three cyclists for
women) line up and their success relies on
how well they work together. The rider on
the front must keep the pace as high as
possible but not ride so fast that they surge
away from their team mates. The cyclists
must ride as close as possible to the rear
wheel of the rider in front of them to gain
every possible aerodynamic benefit but
make sure they don’t touch wheels. The
riders swing up the track at the end of their
‘turn’ on the front leaving the next rider to
set the pace. The time is taken on the front
wheel of the third rider across the line.
Omnium
The Omnium is a new event on the Olympic
program. It is designed to formulate the
“ironman of cycling” and discover the most
versatile cyclist of track racing. The event
consists of six events held over two days
starting with a flying lap, then a points
race, an elimination race, an individual
pursuit, scratch race and finally a time trial.
From each of the six events the competitors
will be ranked from first to last place. The
overall Omnium winner will be determined
by the cyclist who has accumulated the
lowest total of the rankings for the six
events.
