- Slide Objective:Set context, discuss the status quo of enterprise communications, the impact consumerization has on the discussion and present the Microsoft vision for Unified Communications.Initial Build - Communications Today, Talking Points:Technology has brought us a very long way in terms of how we communicate in the business world. But as communication and collaboration technologies have evolved, they have done so independently, in parallel with one another, creating communication silos. In the meantime, the way we work is changing; business is operating at a faster pace and frequently across time zones. As a society we are more mobile, have greater access to technology outside of the workplace and have expectations to match. Today’s Information Workers are using a variety of products and services to meet all of these needs in their professional and personal lives. For most companies today, telephony and voice mail, e-mail, IM, audio conferencing, video conferencing, Web conferencing, and group communication tools all live in their own disconnected silos. Each has evolved a separate operating platform—often with proprietary third-party technology— separate clients, authentication, separate administration, and separate storage and compliance. Add to that all of the consumer oriented tools and services we are using in our daily lives - the result is an enormous headache for the end user, who has to remember separate phone numbers, account names, and passwords. Plus, these users have limited communication with each device—for example, not being able to make audio calls from their computers. Ultimately, their communication is disconnected, and their collaboration and innovation are hindered. These independent silos, which now encompass enterprise and consumer, have led to redundancies and inefficiencies for the IT administrator as well. It has become difficult and expensive to maintain them and to ensure each is in compliance with business and government regulations, is secure and manageable in the long term. Final Build - The Microsoft Unified Communications Vision, Talking Points:Microsoft® Lync® 2013 is an enterprise-ready unified communications platform. Lync connects hundreds of millions of people everywhere, on Windows 8 and other devices, as part of their everyday productivity experience. - Value Proposition:Enable great meeting experiences & collaborationWith the new Gallery View, you automatically see everyone in the Lync Meeting via a continuous view of multiple HD video streams or photos. The video gallery scales to provide the best experience for a diverse set of scenarios including a point-to-point video call, a small group collaborative session or the presentation style sessions (small or large) – showing the most relevant people in the meeting at all times by bringing the 5 dominant speaker’s video “into focus” to the standing row (the top row shown here), and displaying the thumbnail photos of less active participants in the sitting rows (shownjust below). For Lync client users, the legacy audio conference call experience is transformed with the video gallery. Participants’ names are displayed with their video or photos, active speakers can be identified visually – without having to open the roster and search. The roster is accessible to view full contact card information if desired, but can be hidden to minimize distractions. Lync uses industry standards including H.264 SVC to enable the multiparty HD video experienceacross a range of device. The investment in H.264 SVC support enables each participant to receive a video stream that is optimized, in terms of quality, for their endpoint and network conditions. Photos replace video streams if the quality does not meet or exceed minimum standards – as defined by the IT administrator for Lync Server deployments and Microsoft for O365/ Lync Online.
- Value Proposition: Enable great meeting experiences & collaborationWhen scheduling a meeting, the organizer can select a dedicated space, or create a new meeting room with a new ID and password. Customizing the meeting options allows the Lync Meeting to serve a unique set requirements, facilitate a more formal or structured meeting type, or manage the experience for the participants themselves. For example, if you have external participants, specific presenters, or confidential information to discuss, a meeting organizer might want to leverage the Lobby and create a more controlled meeting space.Depending on the type or sizeof the meeting, you can now decide if you want to mute the audience and allow or block video sharing when scheduling. These options are available on the Meeting Options page and are recommended for Lync Meetings with more than 20 participants. Presenters and organizers can even select and lock video of a designated or specific person in the meeting – essentially putting them in the “video spotlight” as the focus for everyone else in the meeting. During the meeting, presenters need to focus on their delivery and the participants – and not be distracted with “meeting administration”. Lync now uses “peeks” to provide more functionality with less clutter. Peeks are buttons that are revealed when you hover over certain areas of the Lync Meeting window. For example, hover over the monitor icon to see all of the options for sharing and managing content, hover over the telephone icon to see Mute or Hold options. Meeting view options are designed to bring content and people together while optimizing the Lync Meeting experience for every individual participant’s needs. The meeting view is selected by the participant and visible only to them – each participant has control of their meeting view. Gallery View shows all the participants’ photos or videos. Speaker View shows the meeting content with the presenter’s video or photo in the lower right corner of the meeting window. Presentation View shows only the meeting content. You get a full view of the content, but you won’t see the participants. Compact View shows only the participants’ photos. Lync mobile clients enable users to make and receive calls using a single, consistent Lync identity and join Lync Meetings from a mobile device with a single touch while avoiding long numeric passcodes or PINS, from the native calendar application (or Lync Meeting tab on iOS).In CU4 and Mobile Wave 1, we delivered Lync on the Windows Phone and the iPhone - as well as iPad, Android phones and Symbian..Mobile Wave 1.5 released in June 2012 delivering a PPT viewing experience to Lync users joining a Lync Meeting from their iPad. The feature set continues to rapidly evolve in Lync 2013 timeframes with VoIP over wireless (WiFi, 4G, 3G) and video over wireless. Lync voice and video over IP experiences, including peer-to-peer (P2P) and Lync Meetings, will be supported on Windows Phone, iPhone and iPad. Attendee experiences toinclude application and desktop sharing for the Lync Metro style app and iPad are planned as well. VoIP and video over IP on Lync for Android smartphones will follow later in H1 CY 2013. There is no Lync Blackberry app at this time. It would have to be managed and developed my Blackberry itself.

LWA eliminates the need to install client software by using a browser-based client to join and participate in Lync Meetings from a shared device or PC, internet café, a personal/ home device or kiosk. External clients, partners and customers can join Lync Meetings with Lync Web App – eliminating the need to download and install the Lync Attendee client previously shipped with Lync 2010.

- Value Proposition: Connect people, communications and the applications they use everyday The contact card is a dynamic resource that displays a contact’s high resolution photo, their presence, status note, location and organizational details and is consistent across Microsoft Office applications. Lync users see their contacts’ availability in real time, chat and quickly move between active conversations and Lync Meetings. When privacy or confidentiality is a concern, users can modify settings to show presence updates only to contacts in the buddy list. With the contact card, Lync users can bring together information from internal and external networks (e.g. SharePoint, LinkedIn and Facebook) into a single card for each person in the contact list. End users can initiate a call or instant message directly from the contact card based on a user’s presence. Contact management is simplerby enabling users to search and find contacts from the corporate address book and add federated contacts to a single contact list to connect with customers and partners.The Exchange Contact Store lights up all Office application, including Lync, allowing you to manage contacts from any Office application.

A simple instant message can be escalated to a Lync Meeting with video conferencing at any time, from the single unified client. Deep integration with Office apps enables instant communication and collaboration with colleagues, customers and partners - from directly within their most frequently used productivity apps. The communication cycles that are a vital part of everyday business are accelerated by enabling instant messaging, voice and video calling and spontaneous Lync Meetings directly from within Outlook, SharePoint and other business applications. Lync is part of the Office suite and has best-of-breed integration in the Office family. For example, PowerPoint presentations are shown "natively" in the Lync experience, providing the highest fidelity and performance possible.

Whiteboard sketches and slide annotations can also be saved into OneNote notebooks. OneNote Share allows users in to create and share OneNote digital meeting notes within a Lync Meeting, reducing errors caused by later transcription and simplifying communication and follow-up. OneNote can be shared in prep for a meeting, during as a resource for content or a tool for note taking and afterwards – as a means of following and reporting status.

- Conceptual deployment of Lync Online.Contoso has a user on premises who connects to Lync Online through the internet.Contoso also has a remote user who may be working from home or a coffee shop who connects to Lync Online through the internet as well. These two users can freely collaborate using Lync Online services. Also, it should be noted, both users have access to the same features so there is no difference sitting on-premises or working remotely.We have one of Contoso’s partners, customers, clients, etc. (Fabrikam) who has implemented Lync Server 2013 (on-prem). Either Contoso user can communicate with the Fabrikam user via Lync Online, assuming the security policies of both companies has allowed for federation.Lastly, we have a Skype user who either Contoso employees can also communicate with.Note: Lync Online federates with Lync Server 2010 & 2013, OCS, and Skype. It does not federate with XMPP or Sametime.
