Media question 1 evaluation
1.
2. My magazine was targeted towards a an individual and unique target audience.
There are not many magazine out on the market currently that target this kind
of audience, they tend to go for a more mainstream way of thinking so they
can attract the mass market. So when looking for things to base my magazine
on it was a little difficult.
There is a basic structure that most magazines are laid out by. This is a 3
column page, a front cover or normally a close up of some one face and only
normally one picture. The Front cover is normally covered in cover lines, pull
quotes and call outs. But to attract the audience I was going for I wanted to do
something different from what is mainstream because the target audience I am
targeting class themselves as individuals and not mainstream, so in order to
appeal to this market I must do some thing that goes away from the norm.
I found one magazine that was target toward my target audience and this is
what i have based most my research on the magazine is called Clash.

5. Normally magazines follow conventions, its like
unwritten rules. These are to do with colours
that go together, the layout of the pages and the
images used. Clash magazine goes away from
the conventions and does different things that
are not usually seen in the normal magazines.
This includes things like putting a border
around articles, cutting up and bordering
pictures. One of the main conventions they
break is the fact that they use only 2
columns, this is not usually seen and most
articles are use either 3 or 4 columns. Another
main unwritten rule they break is the fact that
they don't cover the front page in cover lines
etc. They keep it with one or two simple wrote
sentences. This makes the magazine much more
professional looking and appeals to this
particular market.
6. This is my front cover, in this I have challenged a lot of
conventions. The main one I have challenged is that fact I
have used more than one image. This is unusual to see on a
front cover because it is said that you have to one centre of
visual interest but I wanted to challenge this and use more
that one image because the fact that it is film strips appeal
with my target audience and what they like to do. Also I
haven't covered it in cover lines either. I have mentioned a few
stories that would be inside, I have got this from clash. They
usually only use a few words and this works for the audience
we are targeting. This magazine covered designed by Clash
was my main influence and I think more than one image can
work on a front cover and also limiting cover lines makes the
magazine look more minimalistic and
leaves the audience inclined to find out
more. Also another rule I broke is the fact
I used black and white images, this
connotes old fashioned and simplistic
which I think really works with what I
am trying to do with my magazine. The
theme I'm trying to go for is going
against the rules so by breaking all these
conventions it appeals to my target
audience.
7. My contents also breaks some conventions set by other media
products. Normally a contents page would have one big
image, it is normally made up of a number of images that
reflect what is later shown in the magazine. Also mine is only
2 columns this is also unusual because they normally tend to
either be 3 or 4 columns. Another thing that is unusual about
this page is that the word ‘contents’ in on different lines, i got
this idea from the Vibe magazine, I think it looks different to
normal magazines and by being different it would appeal to
my genre. The main influence for this page was Vibe, because
they also use one big image as a centre of visual image and
also write contents like I have.

9. My double page spread was based and influenced by the double
page spreads I looked at for my research, this was the Clash
magazines. They target the same kind of genre as me and appeal
to the same audience. The first convention I broke was the fact
that like my contents I only used 2 columns, this is unusual to see
in articles and also increases the use of white space. White space
makes the page look simple and clear, its not too busy which
reflects my genre. The second thing i added that isn't normally
found is the fact I bordered my article, this is not normally used
because it can make it look like a word document but because I
broke the border by bleeding my Polaroid picture of the page it
connoted breaking the rules which reflects my target audience. I
also de-saturated the photos because it gives it a more vintage
look this is not normally found in magazines because they like the
pictures to be bright and colourful but I wanted to go against
mainstream. One think that I did that goes along with the
conventions is using plain black text on a white background. This
is the best way to get your writing across and makes use of white
space. I also used a pull quote and placed that straight in the
middle influenced by Clash.
