Urban drama is a subgenre of drama that depicts realistic portrayals of social issues through stories often centered on black American or British males involved in illegal activities like drugs or violence. The genre became popular in the 1980s and 2000s. Urban drama films typically feature protagonists from poor neighborhoods portrayed as products of their environments and often address themes shown in movies like Ill Manors, Menace II Society, and Juice. 2. What is Urban Drama ?
• Urban Drama is one of the different sub genres of Drama, it is known for its illustrations on a
realistic outlook in the society and expressing the social issues.
• The Urban Drama film era started in the early 1980’s and started hitting to one of the
mainstream genres in the 2000’s. During an Urban Drama film the content of it would usually
be Black American/British males which they would be participating in illegal themes such
drugs, trafficking, murdering etc. as well as the illegal aspect the other half to the film would
be the men would be rappers.
• The protagonist in Urban Drama films tend to be where he/she origins from which would
usually be the slums/ghetto district of an area, which is almost like building them as ‘ product
of the environment’. Films which participate in themes such as these are: Ill Manors, Menace
II Society, Juice and Kidulthood.
• Over the past years Urban Drama films have made a bonus in the production of films from
Blu-ray and DVD.
