1. Piedmont has a considerable potential
hiking offer. However, the sector of hiking
tourism is still poorly organized in terms of
management of the infrastructures and
services offer to hikers.
2. The consistency of the hiking trails at the
regional level until 2010 was almost
unknown. 20,000 to 60,000 km hiking trails?
3. In 2010, the Piedmont Region approves the
Regional Law No 12/2010 "Recovery and
Enhancement of the hiking heritage of
Piedmont" which officially recognizes the
network of hiking heritage as a tool for
regional planning.

Data acquisition on the field and processing

The technicians acquire physical characteristics of the hiking trails making use of
GPS devices and following a standardized procedure at the regional level
The information on the hiking trails are processed and normalized by Ipla (Institute
for wood plants and the environment) in order to implement the regional
database

Systems based on geometric entities
consisting of vector objects described
mathematically through the coordinates of
each vertex. In particular, we have three
geometric primitives:
•Points
•Lines
•Areas
The hiking network is described by a set of
polylines connected in such a manner as to
constitute a network.
Alpha-numeric data can be associated to
these geometric elements in order to form
the database of hiking trails
