This document provides an A-Z overview of concepts related to race, gender, and science fiction discussed by the author over the course of a semester. Each entry includes a brief definition or discussion of a term and may include examples. The terms range from aliens and biotechnology to youth fiction and zombies. Citations are provided at the end in A-Z order.

2. Aliens
I always wonder
if aliens ever
existed. If they
did, they may
look like this. I
can only see to
believe.

3. Biotechnology
Biotechnology is
basically modifying
living organisms for
human benefits.
Humans benefit from
things in society like
medicine, helping
agriculture, and food
production due to
biotechnology because
we are trying to improve
the life of humans.

4. Culture
I feel culture plays a key role in race, gender, and science fiction because
culture can change the way an individual thinks based on their own personal
culture they believe in. It can influence the way a person writes their story.
You can learn a lot about what a person has went through from their creative
personal stories.

6. Experimentation
There are many types of
experimentation such as
human, and animal
experimentation. People
experiment on animals
because they can’t say
anything. I say this is
animal abuse but there
are debates that say
otherwise.

7. Femininity
Femininity isn’t all
about being girly. It
can be more than
that which is why I
chose this quote by
James E. Faust. He
makes a good point
about the qualities
he points out and I
think you can find
these in both men
and women.

8. Genocide
One of the
tragedies I
wished never
happened in
history was the
Holocaust. This
was taught in
history class as
a lesson to not
repeat the past.
A lot has to do
with war, hate,
race, choosing a
victim, and many
more factors.

9. Health
War and infrastructure can
threaten ones’ health. The
people who live in that
location where war occurs will
have problems with their
health because of the
destruction of the
environment. There is
basically no where else to go
because it is a war zone.
Diseases start occurring
because people are forced to
drink bad water in such an
environment.

10. Identity
Identity is an interesting subject to
talk about. I never thought about
who I was and where I came from. I
am probably one of many who do
not know much about where they
came from or their cultural
backgrounds. I can understand
appearances and stereotypes but
there are so many factors in identity
that make it interesting to look at.
Identity isn’t just about your name
and where you are from but there is
a lot more to it than people think. It
is how an individual builds up to
who they are today.

11. Justice
Justice is all about
fairness and
equality. We have
wars, issues with
race and gender,
and mainly conflict
with one another.
There is always a
right and a wrong.

14. Masculinity
Masculinity is usually portrayed as such by
males but it doesn’t entirely mean that men don’t
have a feminine side to themselves.

15. Neuroscience
Neuroscience, is like the study
of the nervous system because
all of the structures, functions,
etc. are there to show a human
survives in every day life.
Humans can lack some of these
and still be alive. Neuroscience
has shown how humans have
evolved over time. Psychology
has a lot in common with
neuroscience because it also
shows us a lot about the
functions and structures of the
human mind. For example,
behaviors, language, senses,
etc.

16. Oppression
Throughout history, we have seen
a lot of oppression from many of
the races, blacks, asian, jewish,
spanish, etc. We understand that
oppression is still out there in
society and I believe we can put
an end to it. Slavery, is what I
think is largely known to everyone
in their history classes. The
majority of people who are in the
working class may be faced with
oppression just because of who
they are or the position they are
working in. Everyone should be
treated equal and fairly.

17. Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life
Pro-choice: Every mother would love to have a baby and cannot accept the fact
others would choose to not let an unborn child be brought into this wonderful
world.
Pro-life: Mothers have the choice to do what they want because it is their life.
The baby is theirs and they should have the right to decide whether they want to
be a mother or not.

18. Quest
Every
protagonist has
a quest to
accomplish or
there wouldn’t be
a story to be
told. There is
always a long
road ahead of
him/her.

19. Racism
Racism is a large topic
throughout the world. For
some reason, many people
cannot get along with one
another. They can’t forgive
and forget the history
between different
culture/ethnicities. Many
people are born mixed but
it doesn’t mean another
person can discriminate
you because of your race.
You are your own
individual and should be
proud of who you are.

20. Stereotypes
Stereotypes is
something that
can’t be
unavoided.
Because of
influences from
the media, or
your every day
life, you would
assume who a
person is
because of what
was seen or
heard from
another person.

21. Transhumanism
One of my favorite
terms is
transhumanism
because one day I
feel us humans will
transform into
something like
superhumans with the
acceleration of
technology. We will
improve ourselves
and hit our potentials.

22. Underling
You realize you are an
underling when you are
inferior to someone by
following their lead. As
such, I am an underling
to my teacher because
she teaches this course
and I absorb the
knowledge she brings
forth for her students.

23. Violence

engages in physical contact
with another person. Can be
dangerous.

society that monitors

keeps in check.

because women are
portrayed in many
categories and not every
women are the same.
Women come from many
different race/ethnicities.
Many people think about
the stereotypes of women
as weak, and emotional
but that isn’t entirely true.

25. X-Men
X-men was one of the science fiction novels out there
broadcasted on television when I was a kid. It was
interesting to watch.

26. Youth Fiction
Holes was the first youth
fiction novel I read when I
was young. It was a book
that got me into reading
more other youth fictions.

27. Zombies
Are you ready
for the zombie
apocalypse? Be
sure to get a
guide on how to
survive this
zombie fest. Be
near weapons
and have your
supply of food
ready.
