‘Harnessing the Potential Within’

Exclusive Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge - September 2013
Picture this. You are 5, 895 metres high, on the roof of Africa, just about to take your final steps on to the summit of the ‘Dark
Continent’s highest mountain; the beautiful majestic Mt Kilimanjaro. As you reach the summit, the memories, the struggles and
tribulations of the past six days’ adventure come flooding back and culminate into one euphoric emotion. At that moment, the
feeling of achievement and success in reaching your goal is almost overwhelming….YOU FEEL ALIVE!!. For the past six days, you
have experienced an array of emotions as you battled and pushed through new personal physical and mental barriers. Having
climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, it is impossible not to be changed by the experience in a positive way – almost going home a new person.
During your journey, you have discovered much more about yourself, your personal strengths……and limitations. Climbing Mt
Kilimanjaro is not just about reaching the summit; it is a journey of self-discovery from the day you make the commitment to do it
to the day you return home, the memories and the experience will last a lifetime.

About this adventure
To support Make-A-Wish Australia, adventurers and philanthropists Darren Wise and Shane
Pophfer are offering you the opportunity to join this exclusive, fully led from start to finish, charity
adventure and life changing experience to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Join the team, raise
funds and help us make a difference in the lives of children with life-threatening medical
conditions and enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. There are only 10
positions available, so don’t miss your opportunity to be part of the team on this amazing
adventure in support of Make-A-Wish Australia.

Make-A-Wish® Australia - help grant the wishes of children
and young people with life threatening medical conditions
Make-A-Wish Australia grants the wishes of seriously-ill children and young people, providing
hope, strength and joy when they are needed most. Each year, hundreds of children and
teenagers across Australia are affected by life-threatening conditions. Beyond their illness, these
children all share a common bond - they all have wishes and hopes for the future. They wish to be
doctors and fire-fighters, to go to exotic places or their ancestral homelands. They wish to meet
their sports heroes or the world's most influential businesspeople. Some children wish to have a
laptop computer, and others wish for a pet they can share their time and love with. Through the
Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge, Peak Potential will be supporting Make-A-Wish® by raising funds
to make wishes come true for those who need them most. We look forward to sharing the
enriching work of Make-A-Wish with you.

Why team up with Peak Potential
Peak Potential was founded by renowned adventurers, philanthropists and human performance
advocates, Darren Wise and Shane Pophfer. Darren and Shane have built a solid, well regarded
reputation - not just by taking on extreme adventures, but by extracting the most out of their
experiences mentally as well as physically. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is as much a mental challenge
as it is a physical one, and Darren and Shane will be there every step of the way to encourage and
support your journey from start to finish. Previously serving with the Australian Regular Army’s
elite airborne battalion as paratroopers, Darren and Shane know what it is like to be part of a high
performance team and that cohesive team spirit and effort will emerge victorious in the end.

Mission
To grant the wishes of children and young people with life-threatening medical
conditions and to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Vision
All Australians have the opportunity to share the power of a wish.

Make-A-Wish® Australia history
In 1985, two Australians heard a speech that changed their lives. Since that moment, Make-A-Wish Australia has granted almost
7,000 wishes to Australian children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The first Australian wish was granted to 16-year-old Shawn Cleland of Footscray in Melbourne in 1985. An avid fan of what was
then the VFL, Shawn's wish was to meet the players of his beloved Footscray Football Club.

Shawn had never flown in a plane - so Make-A-Wish added an extra-special touch, flying Shawn to Sydney to see the Bulldogs
play the Swans.

Shawn's favourite player, Footscray legend, Simon Beasley, paid him a visit before the game, ‘Tell the team that if they get a
thrashing they deserve a salary cut’, Shawn joked.

Make-A-Wish Australia is a non-profit organisation and is an affiliate of Make-A-Wish International. Make-A-Wish organisations
can now be found in 36 countries across the globe.

A recent survey found that Make-A-Wish wishes have a significant positive impact on the health and wellbeing of wish children.
97 percent of parents surveyed observed a ‘noticeable improvement’ in their child’s mental and emotional health following the
granting of their wish and said physical health improved discernibly in as many as 75 percent of cases.

Make-A-Wish receives no ongoing government funding and is critically reliant on the generous support of individuals,
organisations and fundraising initiatives like the Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge.

The first wish
All his life, Christopher James Greicius dreamed of becoming a police officer. This wish was to
become the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organisation in the world.

In 1980, at the age of 7, Chris was diagnosed with leukaemia. Upon learning that Chris's most
cherished wish was to be a policeman, members of the Arizona State Troopers began working to
ensure his dream came true. They arranged for Chris to take a flight in a police helicopter, ride in a
patrol car and presented him with his very own uniform. He was even sworn in as an honorary
member of the force.

Sadly, Chris passed away shortly afterwards. But the seed had been planted.

After attending Chris's funeral, two of the State Troopers reflected on the experience of making
his dream come true. They thought that if one boy's wish could be granted, maybe the same could
be done for other children. At that moment, the idea for Make-A-Wish was born.

Experience
As ex-paratroopers, adventurers and successful businessmen, Darren and Shane know what it
is like to push physical and mental boundaries. This experience, combined with a profoundly
deep understanding of the emotional demands of high altitude mountaineering, ensures you will be surrounded by a team of
professional and experienced leaders who truly understand your emotional journey. They know how to provide you with the vital
support when you need it most; not just on the mountain, but with your physical training and mental preparation in the months,
weeks and days leading up to expedition. More people fail to conquer Mt Kilimanjaro mentally than physically.

Darren and Shane know firsthand the physical and mental demands of adventure expeditions.

 They have had previous extensive military training in leadership and teamwork. Their previous military service and training
has prepared them to make important decisions quickly under extreme and adverse conditions.
 They have had ongoing extensive training with individuals and teams, so they know and are fully aware of the dynamics
required not just for a successful expedition, but for an enjoyable experience for the whole team.
 In March 2008, they successfully summited Mt Kilimanjaro in three days up the difficult and steep Umbwe Route which is one
of the fastest commercial ascents without pre-acclimatisation. They carried their own equipment and utilised only a small
  support team.
 In March 2010, over a 5 week global expedition, they summited Mt Aconcagua in Argentina which is South America’s highest
mountain at 6,962 metres; they then travelled to Russia and summited Mt Elbrus, which is Europe’s highest mountain at
5,642 metres. Over a 5 week expedition, they climbed over 15,000 metres including acclimatisation, and flew 45,000
kilometres around the world to achieve their expedition objectives.
 They recently successfully summited Mt McKinley in Alaska which is the highest mountain on the North American continent at
a height of 6,320 metres and regarded as perhaps the coldest mountain in the world. They are currently in preparation for
their summit attempts of Mt Everest and Antarctica’s Mt Vinson to finish off their ‘Seven Summits’ quest, and becoming two
of only a handful of Australian adventurers to complete this high altitude mountaineering crown.
 They are also currently in preparation for an expedition that, if successful back to back with their Mt Everest attempt, would
be an Australian first with only three other people in the world having successfully completed both expeditions.
 Making a difference is what Darren and Shane are truly passionate about in their adventure pursuits. They are ongoing active
supporters of Make-A-Wish, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Legacy; not just through their expedition pursuits, but
ongoing through their direct community involvement and committee support.
 Darren and Shane are not just mountaineers; they are adventurers and peak potential advocates. They thrive on adapting to
challenging and demanding environments and conditions. They firmly believe that continued personal growth is achieved
through challenging your comfort zones and pushing new physical and mental boundaries.

A philanthropic business
Darren and Shane pride themselves on the continued work they do for the greater community
and their charity causes. Any profits derived from the Peak Potential Charity Challenge
expeditions to Mt Kilimanjaro either go back to the charities they support directly; or fund
future personal expeditions undertaken in support of worthwhile charities and community
causes such as Make-A-Wish Australia, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Legacy.
Through your support of the Peak Potential Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge, you will be also
making a difference to people lives and the world around you.

Strong partners
Peak Potential only works with the best, which is why we have chosen our logistics partners carefully for our Mt Kilimanjaro
Charity Challenge. Peak Potential is pleased to be working with Healthwise Active Travel (HWAT) as our travel and logistics
partner. HWAT is a wholly owned subsidiary of Flight Centre, Australia’s largest travel agency. Its extensive experience and
logistical resources will provide our team members with the necessary travel arrangements and support to ensure everyone gets
to the expedition and home again as smoothly as possible.

All travel component costs raised through fundraising or paid personally will be paid directly to Healthwise Active Travel and
held in trust with Healthwise Active Travel to fund your expedition costs.

You can obtain more information about Healthwise Active Travel at: www.hwactivetravel.com

Fundraising
Peak Potential has designed a simple and transparent fundraising structure to ensure you are
rewarded for your charity fundraising efforts. Peak Potential and Make-A-Wish will assist you with
ongoing comprehensive advice and ideas to ensure you reach your fundraising target. Peak Potential
and Make-A-Wish have also teamed up with Everyday Hero to provide you with a team fundraising
page that will inform and inspire your charity sponsors with information about your expedition, your
cause and your fundraising target. This fundraising page will also allow your followers to track your
fundraising progress and cheer you on.

We will help you with:

 Understanding Make-A-Wish and where your fundraising goes
 How to formulate a comprehensive fundraising plan
 How to plan a fundraising event
 How to join and manage the Everyday Hero fundraising team page
 How to approach friends, family, colleagues and organisations to support your expedition and Make-A-Wish
 Other fundraising ideas and advice to ensure you reach your fundraising goals.

As an example, 50 percent of your fundraising would go to Make-A-Wish Australia, and 50 percent would go towards funding
your expedition costs and travel expenses up to a maximum reimbursement of $9,000 which includes the initial registration fee
of $2,000. Below are some examples on how you could approach your fundraising.

1. You can opt to pay for your own travel costs ($9,000 including your initial registration fee) as your annual holiday and
fundraise the $7,000 charity portion, or your best fundraising endeavours to support Make-A-Wish Australia.

2. You can fundraise the entire amount including your registration fee (total of $16,000); ensuring funds raised towards the
travel costs are not raised in the name of ‘Make-A-Wish’ and you are transparent with your donors that their donation will be
going towards your travel expenses and are not tax deductible.

3. You may choose to fundraise as much as you can as per option two and pay the remaining balance that is left of the $9,000
expedition costs if you don’t reach your required fundraising target.

4. You may choose to personally fund the entire amount of $14,000 (excludes the initial registration fee) and claim the minimum
charity portion of $7,000 as a personal tax deductible donation to Make-A-Wish Australia.

There are a few ways that you can structure your fundraising. Make-A-Wish Australia and Peak Potential will help you decide
which fundraising structure or combination will suit you best. Please also refer to the fundraising FAQ’s on pages 13 & 14 for
more information. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question or queries with the fundraising structure.

Preparation and support
With any expedition, preparation is vital for success. Peak Potential provides an ongoing
training and equipment support program during the lead up to the expedition. Regular
contact and support will be ongoing through the Peak Potential Facebook page, as well as by
email, phone and personally as required. The team positions for our exclusive Mt Kilimanjaro
expeditions are usually filled by referral.

We strongly suggest you find a local training and expedition partner to undertake this
challenge with you. This will go a long way in providing vital ongoing motivation for training and support, not just leading up to
the expedition, but also during the climb. Healthwise Active Travel will also provide ongoing travel advice and support, getting
you to the expedition and back home.

Fitness requirements
Sticking to a fitness program in the months prior to climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is a vital part of preparation. It is true that attempting
to become as fit as possible may not ultimately help with the prevention of acute mountain sickness (AMS), but an increased
level of fitness will ensure the body's ability to cope with the change in atmospheric pressure is amplified, making both
acclimatisation and the walking itself far less strenuous. More important than anything else when it comes to climbing, is one's
cardiovascular (CV) fitness. Cardiovascular fitness refers to the fitness level of the most important muscle in the body - the heart.
Exercising for between 20 and 40 minutes approximately 4 times a week will significantly increase CV fitness, leading to more
efficient oxygen consumption by the tissues of the body. This will result in the more effective use of energy supplies, substantially
improving your chances of a successful summit attempt.

Activities such as jogging, cycling, swimming and boxing all increase the heart rate and improve your CV fitness. The best option is
to attempt to include activities that you enjoy, which will improve the chances of actually continuing with a fitness program.
Performing the same exercise every time is not recommended, as sooner or later the body becomes accustomed to the training
and is thus no longer challenged by it. Effective methods of training include cross training and interval training. Cross training
involves performing at least two different forms of exercise in one session; whilst interval training includes varying your effort
level substantially every couple of minutes during a single session. Both of these techniques keep the heart challenged on an
ongoing basis, ensuring that your CV fitness is constantly on the increase.

The closer it gets to the expedition, the longer cardio sessions should last. Ideally, a month
before the climb is due to commence, you should be training for around 45 minutes at least
three times a week. Closer to the commencement of the expedition, it is advisable to include
activities such as steep hill climbing and long hikes to build up your endurance. Any training
that is similar to Mt Kilimanjaro experience will be beneficial, even a short hike every second
weekend. Purchasing a Backpack long in advance and taking it on 'practice runs' will help to
prepare your body for the conditions it will experience on the mountain. If you cannot get out
into the mountains regularly, find a gym that has a summit climber in their equipment line-up.
These machines work the climbing muscles that will be used during the expedition. Also, as
previously mentioned, try and do the climb with an expedition partner. An expedition partner is not only a great source of
motivation leading up to the expedition, but you will be a great support for each other on the mountain - making the whole
experience more enjoyable.

Darren and Shane will be available leading up to the expedition to provide training advice and ensure you are physically prepared
for the expedition. They will also provide valuable advice on your mental preparation and what to expect on the mountain.
Mental preparation is vital if you are to succeed, not just on the mountain, but leading up to the climb.

Please note that your position on the expedition is not guaranteed. A booking form needs to be completed and an assessment
completed of both your experience and fitness level to undertake the Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge safely.

your travel bag and excess equipment that you’re not taking on the climb at the hotel for collection on your return.

Day 3 - Saturday 14th September
Your adventure begins!!!

Machame Route Map
For the September, 2013 expedition, we have decided to take the Machame Route to the summit. This route is sometimes called
the Whisky Route. This is a popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the
moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. The track then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Icefields to join
up with the Barafu Route to the summit. The Mweka Route is used for the descent from the summit.

Accommodation on the mountain is in tents which the porters will pitch for you. You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes and
walking poles. This is a more challenging route up Mt Kilimanjaro, but well within the limits of a fit individual used to trekking and
exercise.

This is also probably the most beautiful route up Mt Kilimanjaro. All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook
prepares all your meals. Where accommodation on the Marangu Route is in huts, the Machame Route offers strictly tents only.
This makes Machame ‘’ better suited to the more adventurous climber and, it rewards them with a scenic splendour such as not
seen on the Marangu Route. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, the
Machame Route offers you a stunning scenic ‘slide show’ over six days. There is an added benefit to this, as you are afforded the
most valuable commodity on the mountain - acclimatisation. The Machame Route takes you high to Lava Tower (4,630m) on the
day three and brings you down by nearly 700m for an overnight at Barranco Camp (3,950m). This is the secret to successful
acclimatisation.

Moshi (915m) to Machame Gate (1,490m)
Machame Gate (1,490m) to Machame Camp (2,980m)

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Distance: 18 km
Habitat: Montane Forest
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Your day starts early with a briefing, followed by breakfast and a 50-minute drive from Moshi to the Machame Village (1,490m)
where your guides and porters prepare and pack your equipment and supplies. You will receive a lunch pack, and you can also
buy drinks in the village. If the road is very muddy, it may be impossible to drive from the village to the Machame Gate, and in
this case, it will take us an extra hour to complete the muddy three km walk to the gate. After registering at the park office, you
start your ascent and enter the rain forest immediately. Heavy rains on this side of the mountain often transform the trail into a
soggy, slippery experience, so good footgear, trekking poles and gaiters are useful. You will enjoy a welcome lunch stop halfway
up and we will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. Your porters will arrive at camp before you and will erect
your tent before you arrive. In the evening, the porters boil drinking and washing water while the cook prepares your dinner.
Night-time temperatures can drop to freezing at the Machame Camp.

Day 4 - Sunday 15th September
Machame Camp (2,980m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Distance: 9 km
Habitat: Moorland
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

You rise early at Machame Camp, and after breakfast, climb for an hour to the top of the forest, then for two hours through
gentle moorland. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau where you will be able to see
Mt Kilimanjaro’s great Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. Sometimes, the walls of the Western Breach are draped with
extensive ice curtains. You are now west of Kibo on the opposite side of the mountain from the Marangu Route. After a short
hike west, you reach the Shira campsite. The porters will boil drinking and washing water before serving dinner. The night at this
exposed camp will be colder, with temperatures dropping below freezing.

Day 5 - Monday 16th September
Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m)
Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Distance: 15 km
Habitat: Semi-Desert
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

After breakfast, you will hike east up a steepening path above the highest vegetation toward Mt Kilimanjaro’s looming massif.
After several hours, you walk through a rocky landscape to reach the prominent landmark called Lava Tower at 4,630m. This
rugged remnant of Mt Kilimanjaro’s earlier volcanic activity is several hundred feet high, and the trail passes right below it. For
extra credit, the sure-footed can scramble to the top of the tower. After a lunch stop near Lava Tower, you’ll descend for two
hours below the lower cliffs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall to Barranco Camp at 3,950m. There are numerous photo
opportunities on this hike, especially if the walls are garlanded with ice. Barranco Camp is in a valley below the Breach and Great
Barranco Walls, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner. On this day, be careful to
notice any signs of altitude sickness.

Day 6 - Tuesday 17th September
Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Valley (4,000m)
Karanga Valley (4,000m) to Barafu Camp (4,550m)
Hiking Time: 8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

After spending the night camped under the imposing Great Barranco Wall, you climb this awesome natural feature, which turns
out to be easier than it looks. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you can now appreciate just how beautiful Mt Kilimanjaro
really is. Continue along Karanga Valley and you have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from
many different angles. For now, all eyes are still on the summit, so turn left and hike up the ridge for another hour to the Barafu
Hut. There is no water at Barafu Camp, even though Barafu is the Swahili word for ‘ice’. The famous snows of Mt Kilimanjaro are
far above Barafu Camp near the summit of the mountain. Your tent will be pitched on a narrow stony wind-swept ridge, so make
sure that you familiarise yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents. Prepare your equipment and warm clothing
for your summit climb. This should include replacing your headlamp and camera batteries; and to prevent freezing, consider
carrying your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed by 7 PM, and try to get a few hours of precious sleep.

Day 7 - Wednesday 18th September (Summit Day!)
Barafu Camp (4,550m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking Time: 8 hours up, 7-8 hours down
Distance: 7 km up, 23 km down
Habitat: Scree and seasonal snow
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner

You will rise around 11:30 PM, and after some steaming tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night. Your six hour climb,
northwest up through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers to Stella Point on the crater rim, is the most
challenging part of the route for most climbers. At Stella Point (5,685m) you stop for a short rest and a chance to see a supremely
spectacular sunrise. At Stella Point you join the top part of the Marangu Route; but do not stop here too long, as it will be
extremely difficult to start again due to the cold and fatigue. Depending on the season and recent storms, you may encounter
snow on your remaining hike along the rim to Uhuru Peak. On the summit, you can enjoy your accomplishment and know that
you are creating a day that you will remember for the rest of your life. After your three hour descent from the summit back to
Barafu Camp, you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect your gear. You then hike down a rock and scree path into the
moorland and eventually through the forest to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This camp is in the upper forest, so you can expect mist or
rain in the late afternoon. Dinner, and washing water will be prepared, and the camp office sells drinking water, soft drinks,
chocolates and beer!

Day 8 - Thursday 19th September
Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,980m)
Mweka Gate (1,980m) to Moshi (890m)
Hiking Time: 3 hours
Distance: 15km
Habitat: Forest
Meals included: breakfast, lunch

After a well-deserved early breakfast, it is a short three hour scenic hike back to the park gate. We strongly recommend you not
tip your porters until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely. At Mweka gate you sign your name and details in a
register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point
(5,685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. From the
Mweka Gate you will continue down into the Mweka Village, normally a muddy 3 km (one hour) hike. In the Mweka Village you
will be served a delicious hot lunch. You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations. You
stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 9 - Friday 20th September
Departure from Moshi

Today you will book out of your hotel and be driven in the shuttle to Kilimanjaro airport for your return flight home to Australia.
Some of you may be staying on to participate in a safari and some people may be travelling on to other destinations in Africa or
abroad.

Day ten - Saturday 21st September
Transit

You will travel via Nairobi and Bangkok back to Australia.

Day 11 - Sunday 22nd September
Welcome home - Share your amazing adventure with your family and friends.

‘Harnessing the Potential Within’

How much money do I have to fundraise?
The fundraising target consists of two components; the travel costs and the charity portion. The split is approximately 50/50. You
are required to fundraise a minimum amount of $7,000. You can of course fundraise above and beyond this target and all
additional funds raised will go directly to Make-A-Wish and help us grant the wishes of children with life threatening medical
conditions.

How do I fundraise the fundraising target?
There are four different ways you can raise the fundraising target:

1. You may choose to personally fund the entire amount and claim the minimum charity portion of $7,000 as a tax deductible
   donation.
2. You can opt to pay for your own travel costs as your annual holiday and fundraise the charity portion.
3. You may choose to fundraise as much as you can and pay the remaining balance yourself.
4. You can fundraise the entire amount; ensuring funds raised towards the travel costs are not raised in the name of ‘Make-A-
Wish’ and you are transparent with your donors that their donation will be going towards your travel expenses and are not
   tax deductible.

Will I receive any fundraising support?
Once you have registered for the challenge, we will assist you in developing your very own ”fundraising plan”. Peak Potential and
Make-A-Wish will be available to support you in your fundraising and ensure you are all on track, offer advice and support where
required.

How will people know that I am eligible to fundraise for Make-A-Wish?
Once you have registered for the challenge, you will receive a Community Fundraising Kit from Make-A-Wish which will include a
form outlining “Your responsibilities as a fundraiser”. You will be required to sign and return this form to Make-A-Wish. Once this
form is received Make-A-Wish will issue you with an authority to fundraise in the form of a letter. This letter can be shown as
proof of eligibility.

What is the deadline for raising the money?
                                           st
The final date for fundraising will be the 1 July 2013.

Once you have registered your place on the challenge, we will supply you with a Fundraising Kit which will include a ‘’Countdown
Calendar’’. This comprises a schedule listing all the important milestones in the lead up to your trip including payment dates and
amounts, and when to arrange your various travel documents.

How do I fundraise for the travel component of the target?
Many choose to fund their own travel costs, using money normally spent on their annual holiday. Alternatively, you could hold an
event or activity for family and friends who are willing to support your personal travel costs.

If you choose to fundraise the travel component you must be transparent with your supporters and ensure they are aware that
their donation is contributing wholly or partly towards your travel costs. Please note it is important that your supporters
understand that their donation will not be given to Make-A-Wish and is therefore not a tax deductible donation but a
contribution to your travel expenses.

For this reason we are unable to accept funds for the travel component of the trip through your Everyday Hero page as these
donations are automatically issued a tax deductible receipt.

‘Harnessing the Potential Within’

What happens if I don’t fundraise the target in time, can I still go on the
challenge?
If you fall short of the fundraising target, you can make up the balance yourself and still participate in the challenge. Make-A-
Wish and Peak Potential will support you throughout the entire fundraising process. We assist you in setting up an initial
fundraising plan (as above) and break the target down into manageable amounts. The experienced Make-A-Wish fundraising
team as well as Peak Potential will continually support and monitor your fundraising progress with regular correspondence to
assist you in meeting your target.

Can I pay the whole amount myself and receive a tax deductible receipt for the
charity portion of the target?
Definitely, this is a great option if you do not have the time to fundraise but would still like to participate in the challenge whilst
supporting Make-A-Wish. If you choose this option only the charity component is tax deductible.

Who is eligible to receive a tax deductible receipt for their donation?
Any funds raised for the travel costs of the trip are not tax deductible. All other donations (charity
component) are eligible, so long as they are over $2.00 and the donor has not received anything in return for their contribution.
For example, sponsorship and donations through your online fundraising page are tax deductible, trivia nights and sausage sizzles
are not.

If any donors require a receipt, you must collect their donation amount and contact information (including the donor's full name
and postal address) on the Donor Receipt Form issued to you following approval of the Activity. This must be supplied to Make-
A-Wish at the end of your fundraiser. We will then organise and send receipts direct to each donor.

It’s important to note that the donor must not receive a material benefit or an advantage by way of return for their donation. For
more information on this, go the Australian Tax Office website: www.ato.gov.au

If you are unclear as to what is eligible and what is not please do not hesitate to contact Make-A-Wish.

How do I collect donations from my supporters via cash/cheque/credit cards?
Donations can be collected in the form of cash, cheques or money/postal orders (these should be made out to Make-A-Wish
Australia when funds are being raised as part of the charity component of the challenge). Note that this applies to donations
only; other payments associated with your fundraising activity (e.g. tickets to an event, or payment for an auction item) should be
made out to the relevant business or you as the fundraiser (if you need to pay for expenses out of the revenue raised).

Supporters who wish to make a donation to Make-A-Wish via credit card will need to call us on 1800 032 260 or visit your
Everyday Hero online fundraising page where they can process credit/debit card or PayPal donations.

Make-A-Wish cannot process credit/debit card payments relating to any activities associated with your fundraising activity (e.g.
credit card payments for tickets to your event, or payments for auction items). Make-A-Wish can only process a credit/debit card
payment from you for the total amount of net proceeds being donated to Make-A-Wish at the conclusion of your fundraiser. As
the organiser of the fundraising activity, you are responsible for all financial transactions.

Healthwise Active Travel (Flight Centre) Booking Terms and Conditions
Please read the following terms and conditions carefully. You must not make any booking unless you understand and agree with the following terms and conditions. References
to ‘us’, ‘we’ and/or ‘our’ in these booking terms and conditions shall mean Flight Centre Limited.
Prices:
All prices are subject to availability and can be withdrawn or varied without notice. The price is only guaranteed when paid in full. Please note that prices quoted are subject to
change. Price changes may occur by reason of matters outside our control which increase the cost of the product or service. Such factors include adverse currency fluctuations, fuel
surcharges, taxes and airfare increases. Please contact your consultant for up to date prices.
Refunds, Changes and Cancellation Fees:
We are unable to provide a refund to you until we receive the funds from the relevant supplier. Cancelled bookings will incur charges. These charges can be up to 100% of the cost of
the booking, regardless of whether travel has commenced. Fees and extra charges will apply where a booking is changed. Fees and extra charges will also apply when tickets or
documents are re-issued. Where we incur any liability for a cancellation fee or charge for any booking which you cancel, you agree to indemnify us for the amount of that fee or
charge.
Deposit and Final Payment:
You will be required to pay a deposit or deposits when booking. Your consultant will advise you of how much that will be. All deposits are non-refundable for changes of mind or
cancellations. Final payment is required no later than 6 weeks prior to departure unless otherwise stated. Some airfares or services must be paid in full at the time of booking.
Payments by Credit Card:
Credit card surcharges of 1.98% for Visa, MasterCard and American Express, and 3% for Diner's Club will apply when paying by credit card. If for any reason any travel service
provider is unable to provide the services for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against that provider, and not against us. In the event that payment has been made to us
by credit card, you agree that you will not seek to charge back your payment to us.

                                                                                                                                                                              Page | 18
Payments by B-Pay:

date. You must notify your consultant of your payment once it has been made.
Payments by Cheque:
Please note that cheque payments (including bank cheques) require 5 business days to process. If you are paying by this method you will need to make the payment at least 5
business days prior to the actual due date. You agree not to stop payment of the cheque even when you cancel a booking. You agree that we may apply the proceeds of the cheque
to satisfy any liability you have to us, including any liability in respect of cancellation fees, before refunding the balance to you.

Airline taxes are subject to change and are confirmed at the time your airline ticket is issued. There may also be a local tax charged at some airports.

It is compulsory to have travel insurance for this expedition. We are an authorised representative of CoverMore Travel Insurance Services Pty Ltd, Australian Financial Services
Licence number 241713, on whose behalf we act. You must obtain a Product Disclosure Statement relating to the travel insurance product you are considering purchasing and should
read that document before making any decision about whether to acquire the product. Travel Insurance is strongly recommended by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for
all overseas travel. Please complete your travel insurance application form, sign it and return it to us. We cannot issue your insurance until this form is provided regardless of
whether payment has been made. If you decline travel insurance you may be required to sign a disclaimer.

We act as an agent only. We sell various travel related products on behalf of numerous transport, accommodation and other service providers, such as airlines, coach, rail and cruise
line operators. Our obligation is to make travel bookings on your behalf and to arrange relevant contracts between you and travel service providers. We have no responsibility for
these services nor do we make or give any warranty or representation regarding their standard. All bookings are made on your behalf subject to the terms and conditions and
limitations of liability imposed by these service providers. Your legal recourse is against the specific provider and not us. If for any reason, any travel service provider is unable to
provide the services for which you have contracted your remedy lies against the provider and not with us.
Liability:
We do not accept any liability of whatever nature, whether in contract, tort or otherwise, for the acts, omissions or default, whether negligent or otherwise, of third party providers
over whom we have no direct control. Under circumstances where liability cannot be excluded, such liability is limited to the value of the purchased travel arrangements. We do not
accept any liability in contract, tort or otherwise for any injury, damage, loss (including consequential loss), delay, additional expense or inconvenience caused directly or indirectly by
force majeure or any other event which is beyond our control and which is not preventable by reasonable diligence on our part.

Please liaise with your consultant regarding any special requirements you may have for your travel arrangements such as special meal and seating requests.
Frequent Flyer:
Please advise your consultant of your frequent flyer membership details for inclusion in your booking. Please check your frequent flyer program for the specific terms of your
membership. We cannot guarantee that the supplier will credit you with points for your booking.
Passports & Visas:
It is your responsibility to ensure that you have valid passports, visas and re-entry permits which meet the requirements of immigration and other government authorities. Any fines,
penalties, payments or expenditures incurred as a result of such documents not meeting the requirements of those authorities will be your sole responsibility. All travellers must
have a valid passport for international travel and many countries require at least 6 months validity from the date of return and some countries require a machine-readable passport.
If you need information regarding visa and other travel document requirements for your trip please let us know. We can obtain such information from an external visa advisory
service provider on your behalf. We do not warrant the accuracy of such information and accept no liability for any loss or damage which you may suffer in reliance on it. If you wish,
we can obtain visas for you through this external service and fees will apply.
If you are travelling to the United States
Please see https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov for information regarding compulsory pre-registration for their visa waiver program. Please note, you may not meet the requirements of ESTA
and may be required to obtain a visa.
Travel Advice:
For travel advice, please contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or visit their website at www.smartraveller.gov .au.
Health:
You must ensure that you are aware of any health requirements for your travel and ensure that you carry all necessary vaccination documentation. Please check with your local
doctor or specialist vaccination clinic.
Travel Documents:
Travel documents include (without limitation) airline tickets, hotel vouchers, tour vouchers or any other document (whether in electronic form or otherwise) used to confirm an
arrangement with a service provider. Travel documents may be subject to certain conditions and/or restrictions including (without limitation) being non-refundable, non-date
changeable and subject to cancellation and/or amendment fees. Travel documents cannot be transferred to another person to use. All airline tickets must be issued in the name of
the passport/photo identity holder. An incorrect name on a booking may result in an inability to use that booking and the booking being cancelled. Any errors in names, dates and
timings on your documentation will be your responsibility if not advised at the time of booking. It is your responsibility to collect all travel documents from us prior to travel. As a
general rule your travel documents will be available for collection 2 weeks prior to departure, however this will depend on your individual arrangements. Please contact your
consultant to confirm when your travel documents are ready for collection.

courts of Australia, and waive any right that you may have to object to an action being brought in those courts.

  • 3. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Exclusive Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge - September 2013 Picture this. You are 5, 895 metres high, on the roof of Africa, just about to take your final steps on to the summit of the ‘Dark Continent’s highest mountain; the beautiful majestic Mt Kilimanjaro. As you reach the summit, the memories, the struggles and tribulations of the past six days’ adventure come flooding back and culminate into one euphoric emotion. At that moment, the feeling of achievement and success in reaching your goal is almost overwhelming….YOU FEEL ALIVE!!. For the past six days, you have experienced an array of emotions as you battled and pushed through new personal physical and mental barriers. Having climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, it is impossible not to be changed by the experience in a positive way – almost going home a new person. During your journey, you have discovered much more about yourself, your personal strengths……and limitations. Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is not just about reaching the summit; it is a journey of self-discovery from the day you make the commitment to do it to the day you return home, the memories and the experience will last a lifetime. About this adventure To support Make-A-Wish Australia, adventurers and philanthropists Darren Wise and Shane Pophfer are offering you the opportunity to join this exclusive, fully led from start to finish, charity adventure and life changing experience to Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Join the team, raise funds and help us make a difference in the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions and enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. There are only 10 positions available, so don’t miss your opportunity to be part of the team on this amazing adventure in support of Make-A-Wish Australia. Make-A-Wish® Australia - help grant the wishes of children and young people with life threatening medical conditions Make-A-Wish Australia grants the wishes of seriously-ill children and young people, providing hope, strength and joy when they are needed most. Each year, hundreds of children and teenagers across Australia are affected by life-threatening conditions. Beyond their illness, these children all share a common bond - they all have wishes and hopes for the future. They wish to be doctors and fire-fighters, to go to exotic places or their ancestral homelands. They wish to meet their sports heroes or the world's most influential businesspeople. Some children wish to have a laptop computer, and others wish for a pet they can share their time and love with. Through the Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge, Peak Potential will be supporting Make-A-Wish® by raising funds to make wishes come true for those who need them most. We look forward to sharing the enriching work of Make-A-Wish with you. Why team up with Peak Potential Peak Potential was founded by renowned adventurers, philanthropists and human performance advocates, Darren Wise and Shane Pophfer. • 5. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Mission To grant the wishes of children and young people with life-threatening medical conditions and to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Vision All Australians have the opportunity to share the power of a wish. Make-A-Wish® Australia history In 1985, two Australians heard a speech that changed their lives. Since that moment, Make-A-Wish Australia has granted almost 7,000 wishes to Australian children with life-threatening medical conditions. The first Australian wish was granted to 16-year-old Shawn Cleland of Footscray in Melbourne in 1985. An avid fan of what was then the VFL, Shawn's wish was to meet the players of his beloved Footscray Football Club. Shawn had never flown in a plane - so Make-A-Wish added an extra-special touch, flying Shawn to Sydney to see the Bulldogs play the Swans. Shawn's favourite player, Footscray legend, Simon Beasley, paid him a visit before the game, ‘Tell the team that if they get a thrashing they deserve a salary cut’, Shawn joked. Make-A-Wish Australia is a non-profit organisation and is an affiliate of Make-A-Wish International. Make-A-Wish organisations can now be found in 36 countries across the globe. A recent survey found that Make-A-Wish wishes have a significant positive impact on the health and wellbeing of wish children. 97 percent of parents surveyed observed a ‘noticeable improvement’ in their child’s mental and emotional health following the granting of their wish and said physical health improved discernibly in as many as 75 percent of cases. Make-A-Wish receives no ongoing government funding and is critically reliant on the generous support of individuals, organisations and fundraising initiatives like the Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge. For further information regarding Make-A-Wish Australia, please call 1800 032 260 or visit www.makeawish.org.au The first wish All his life, Christopher James Greicius dreamed of becoming a police officer. This wish was to become the inspiration for the largest wish-granting organisation in the world. In 1980, at the age of 7, Chris was diagnosed with leukaemia. Upon learning that Chris's most cherished wish was to be a policeman, members of the Arizona State Troopers began working to ensure his dream came true. They arranged for Chris to take a flight in a police helicopter, ride in a patrol car and presented him with his very own uniform. He was even sworn in as an honorary member of the force. Sadly, Chris passed away shortly afterwards. But the seed had been planted. After attending Chris's funeral, two of the State Troopers reflected on the experience of making his dream come true. They thought that if one boy's wish could be granted, maybe the same could be done for other children. At that moment, the idea for Make-A-Wish was born. • 6. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Experience As ex-paratroopers, adventurers and successful businessmen, Darren and Shane know what it is like to push physical and mental boundaries. This experience, combined with a profoundly deep understanding of the emotional demands of high altitude mountaineering, ensures you will be surrounded by a team of professional and experienced leaders who truly understand your emotional journey. They know how to provide you with the vital support when you need it most; not just on the mountain, but with your physical training and mental preparation in the months, weeks and days leading up to expedition. More people fail to conquer Mt Kilimanjaro mentally than physically. Darren and Shane know firsthand the physical and mental demands of adventure expeditions.  They have had previous extensive military training in leadership and teamwork. Their previous military service and training has prepared them to make important decisions quickly under extreme and adverse conditions.  They have had ongoing extensive training with individuals and teams, so they know and are fully aware of the dynamics required not just for a successful expedition, but for an enjoyable experience for the whole team.  In March 2008, they successfully summited Mt Kilimanjaro in three days up the difficult and steep Umbwe Route which is one of the fastest commercial ascents without pre-acclimatisation. They carried their own equipment and utilised only a small support team.  In March 2010, over a 5 week global expedition, they summited Mt Aconcagua in Argentina which is South America’s highest mountain at 6,962 metres; they then travelled to Russia and summited Mt Elbrus, which is Europe’s highest mountain at 5,642 metres. Over a 5 week expedition, they climbed over 15,000 metres including acclimatisation, and flew 45,000 kilometres around the world to achieve their expedition objectives.  They recently successfully summited Mt McKinley in Alaska which is the highest mountain on the North American continent at a height of 6,320 metres and regarded as perhaps the coldest mountain in the world. They are currently in preparation for their summit attempts of Mt Everest and Antarctica’s Mt Vinson to finish off their ‘Seven Summits’ quest, and becoming two of only a handful of Australian adventurers to complete this high altitude mountaineering crown.  They are also currently in preparation for an expedition that, if successful back to back with their Mt Everest attempt, would be an Australian first with only three other people in the world having successfully completed both expeditions.  Making a difference is what Darren and Shane are truly passionate about in their adventure pursuits. They are ongoing active supporters of Make-A-Wish, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Legacy; not just through their expedition pursuits, but ongoing through their direct community involvement and committee support.  Darren and Shane are not just mountaineers; they are adventurers and peak potential advocates. They thrive on adapting to challenging and demanding environments and conditions. They firmly believe that continued personal growth is achieved through challenging your comfort zones and pushing new physical and mental boundaries. Peak Potential and Make-A-Wish have also teamed up with Everyday Hero to provide you with a team fundraising page that will inform and inspire your charity sponsors with information about your expedition, your cause and your fundraising target. This fundraising page will also allow your followers to track your fundraising progress and cheer you on. We will help you with:  Understanding Make-A-Wish and where your fundraising goes  How to formulate a comprehensive fundraising plan  How to plan a fundraising event  How to join and manage the Everyday Hero fundraising team page  How to approach friends, family, colleagues and organisations to support your expedition and Make-A-Wish  Other fundraising ideas and advice to ensure you reach your fundraising goals. As an example, 50 percent of your fundraising would go to Make-A-Wish Australia, and 50 percent would go towards funding your expedition costs and travel expenses up to a maximum reimbursement of $9,000 which includes the initial registration fee of $2,000. Below are some examples on how you could approach your fundraising. 1. You can opt to pay for your own travel costs ($9,000 including your initial registration fee) as your annual holiday and fundraise the $7,000 charity portion, or your best fundraising endeavours to support Make-A-Wish Australia. 2. You can fundraise the entire amount including your registration fee (total of $16,000); ensuring funds raised towards the travel costs are not raised in the name of ‘Make-A-Wish’ and you are transparent with your donors that their donation will be going towards your travel expenses and are not tax deductible. 3. You may choose to fundraise as much as you can as per option two and pay the remaining balance that is left of the $9,000 expedition costs if you don’t reach your required fundraising target. 4. You may choose to personally fund the entire amount of $14,000 (excludes the initial registration fee) and claim the minimum charity portion of $7,000 as a personal tax deductible donation to Make-A-Wish Australia. There are a few ways that you can structure your fundraising. Make-A-Wish Australia and Peak Potential will help you decide which fundraising structure or combination will suit you best. Please also refer to the fundraising FAQ’s on pages 13 & 14 for more information. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question or queries with the fundraising structure. • 8. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Preparation and support With any expedition, preparation is vital for success. Peak Potential provides an ongoing training and equipment support program during the lead up to the expedition. Regular contact and support will be ongoing through the Peak Potential Facebook page, as well as by email, phone and personally as required. The team positions for our exclusive Mt Kilimanjaro expeditions are usually filled by referral. We strongly suggest you find a local training and expedition partner to undertake this challenge with you. This will go a long way in providing vital ongoing motivation for training and support, not just leading up to the expedition, but also during the climb. Healthwise Active Travel will also provide ongoing travel advice and support, getting you to the expedition and back home. Fitness requirements Sticking to a fitness program in the months prior to climbing Mt Kilimanjaro is a vital part of preparation. It is true that attempting to become as fit as possible may not ultimately help with the prevention of acute mountain sickness (AMS), but an increased level of fitness will ensure the body's ability to cope with the change in atmospheric pressure is amplified, making both acclimatisation and the walking itself far less strenuous. More important than anything else when it comes to climbing, is one's cardiovascular (CV) fitness. Cardiovascular fitness refers to the fitness level of the most important muscle in the body - the heart. Exercising for between 20 and 40 minutes approximately 4 times a week will significantly increase CV fitness, leading to more efficient oxygen consumption by the tissues of the body. This will result in the more effective use of energy supplies, substantially improving your chances of a successful summit attempt. Activities such as jogging, cycling, swimming and boxing all increase the heart rate and improve your CV fitness. The best option is to attempt to include activities that you enjoy, which will improve the chances of actually continuing with a fitness program. Performing the same exercise every time is not recommended, as sooner or later the body becomes accustomed to the training and is thus no longer challenged by it. Effective methods of training include cross training and interval training. Cross training involves performing at least two different forms of exercise in one session; whilst interval training includes varying your effort level substantially every couple of minutes during a single session. Both of these techniques keep the heart challenged on an ongoing basis, ensuring that your CV fitness is constantly on the increase. The closer it gets to the expedition, the longer cardio sessions should last. Ideally, a month before the climb is due to commence, you should be training for around 45 minutes at least three times a week. Closer to the commencement of the expedition, it is advisable to include activities such as steep hill climbing and long hikes to build up your endurance. Any training that is similar to Mt Kilimanjaro experience will be beneficial, even a short hike every second weekend. Purchasing a Backpack long in advance and taking it on 'practice runs' will help to prepare your body for the conditions it will experience on the mountain. If you cannot get out into the mountains regularly, find a gym that has a summit climber in their equipment line-up. These machines work the climbing muscles that will be used during the expedition. Also, as previously mentioned, try and do the climb with an expedition partner. An expedition partner is not only a great source of motivation leading up to the expedition, but you will be a great support for each other on the mountain - making the whole experience more enjoyable. Darren and Shane will be available leading up to the expedition to provide training advice and ensure you are physically prepared for the expedition. They will also provide valuable advice on your mental preparation and what to expect on the mountain. Mental preparation is vital if you are to succeed, not just on the mountain, but leading up to the climb. Please note that your position on the expedition is not guaranteed. A booking form needs to be completed and an assessment completed of both your experience and fitness level to undertake the Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge safely. • 9. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Trip Itinerary The travel logistics and support for the Mt Kilimanjaro Charity Challenge will be operated and supported by Healthwise Active Travel (HWAT) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Flight Centre. Day 1 - Thursday 12th September Depart Sydney We will board an international flight at Sydney for our amazing journey of adventure. Day 2 - Friday 13th September Arrive Moshi, Tanzania Meals included: lunch, dinner On arrival at Kilimanjaro airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel. After checking in, the rest of the day is free to rest up for the big climb ahead. In the evening, we will have an expedition briefing and organise your equipment for the climb. You will be able to hire any additional equipment required for the climb at the hotel. Once you register for the challenge, Darren and Shane will discuss with you your equipment requirements and help you decide what you should buy or hire to make your experience more comfortable. Darren and Shane have extensive experience with expedition equipment requirements, and what equipment brands will provide you with the best performance and comfort. Having the right equipment will avoid potential discomforts that could put your summit bid at jeopardy. You will be able to store your travel bag and excess equipment that you’re not taking on the climb at the hotel for collection on your return. Day 3 - Saturday 14th September Your adventure begins!!! Machame Route Map For the September, 2013 expedition, we have decided to take the Machame Route to the summit. This route is sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. The track then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Icefields to join up with the Barafu Route to the summit. The Mweka Route is used for the descent from the summit. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents which the porters will pitch for you. You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes and walking poles. This is a more challenging route up Mt Kilimanjaro, but well within the limits of a fit individual used to trekking and exercise. This is also probably the most beautiful route up Mt Kilimanjaro. All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals. Where accommodation on the Marangu Route is in huts, the Machame Route offers strictly tents only. This makes Machame ‘’ better suited to the more adventurous climber and, it rewards them with a scenic splendour such as not seen on the Marangu Route. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, the Machame Route offers you a stunning scenic ‘slide show’ over six days. There is an added benefit to this, as you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain - acclimatisation. The Machame Route takes you high to Lava Tower (4,630m) on the day three and brings you down by nearly 700m for an overnight at Barranco Camp (3,950m). This is the secret to successful acclimatisation. Tel: 0407 607 947 Email: darren@wiseleadership.net.au Copyright Peak Potential 2012. All Rights Reserved Page | 9
  • 10. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Moshi (915m) to Machame Gate (1,490m) Machame Gate (1,490m) to Machame Camp (2,980m) Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Distance: 18 km Habitat: Montane Forest Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner Your day starts early with a briefing, followed by breakfast and a 50-minute drive from Moshi to the Machame Village (1,490m) where your guides and porters prepare and pack your equipment and supplies. You will receive a lunch pack, and you can also buy drinks in the village. If the road is very muddy, it may be impossible to drive from the village to the Machame Gate, and in this case, it will take us an extra hour to complete the muddy three km walk to the gate. After registering at the park office, you start your ascent and enter the rain forest immediately. Heavy rains on this side of the mountain often transform the trail into a soggy, slippery experience, so good footgear, trekking poles and gaiters are useful. You will enjoy a welcome lunch stop halfway up and we will reach the Machame camping area in the late afternoon. Your porters will arrive at camp before you and will erect your tent before you arrive. In the evening, the porters boil drinking and washing water while the cook prepares your dinner. Night-time temperatures can drop to freezing at the Machame Camp. Tel: 0407 607 947 Email: darren@wiseleadership.net.au Copyright Peak Potential 2012. All Rights Reserved Page | 10
  • 11. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Day 4 - Sunday 15th September Machame Camp (2,980m) to Shira Camp (3,840m) Hiking Time: 4-6 hours Distance: 9 km Habitat: Moorland Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner You rise early at Machame Camp, and after breakfast, climb for an hour to the top of the forest, then for two hours through gentle moorland. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira Plateau where you will be able to see Mt Kilimanjaro’s great Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. Sometimes, the walls of the Western Breach are draped with extensive ice curtains. You are now west of Kibo on the opposite side of the mountain from the Marangu Route. After a short hike west, you reach the Shira campsite. The porters will boil drinking and washing water before serving dinner. The night at this exposed camp will be colder, with temperatures dropping below freezing. Day 5 - Monday 16th September Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m) Hiking Time: 7 hours Distance: 15 km Habitat: Semi-Desert Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner After breakfast, you will hike east up a steepening path above the highest vegetation toward Mt Kilimanjaro’s looming massif. After several hours, you walk through a rocky landscape to reach the prominent landmark called Lava Tower at 4,630m. This rugged remnant of Mt Kilimanjaro’s earlier volcanic activity is several hundred feet high, and the trail passes right below it. For extra credit, the sure-footed can scramble to the top of the tower. After a lunch stop near Lava Tower, you’ll descend for two hours below the lower cliffs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall to Barranco Camp at 3,950m. There are numerous photo opportunities on this hike, especially if the walls are garlanded with ice. Barranco Camp is in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Walls, which should provide you with a memorable sunset while you wait for your dinner. On this day, be careful to notice any signs of altitude sickness. Day 6 - Tuesday 17th September Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Valley (4,000m) Karanga Valley (4,000m) to Barafu Camp (4,550m) Hiking Time: 8 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner After spending the night camped under the imposing Great Barranco Wall, you climb this awesome natural feature, which turns out to be easier than it looks. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you can now appreciate just how beautiful Mt Kilimanjaro really is. Continue along Karanga Valley and you have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. For now, all eyes are still on the summit, so turn left and hike up the ridge for another hour to the Barafu Hut. There is no water at Barafu Camp, even though Barafu is the Swahili word for ‘ice’. The famous snows of Mt Kilimanjaro are far above Barafu Camp near the summit of the mountain. Your tent will be pitched on a narrow stony wind-swept ridge, so make sure that you familiarise yourself with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents. Prepare your equipment and warm clothing for your summit climb. This should include replacing your headlamp and camera batteries; and to prevent freezing, consider carrying your water in a thermal flask. Go to bed by 7 PM, and try to get a few hours of precious sleep. Tel: 0407 607 947 Email: darren@wiseleadership.net.au Copyright Peak Potential 2012. All Rights Reserved Page | 11
  • 12. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ Day 7 - Wednesday 18th September (Summit Day!) Barafu Camp (4,550m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m) Hiking Time: 8 hours up, 7-8 hours down Distance: 7 km up, 23 km down Habitat: Scree and seasonal snow Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner You will rise around 11:30 PM, and after some steaming tea and biscuits, you shuffle off into the night. Your six hour climb, northwest up through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers to Stella Point on the crater rim, is the most challenging part of the route for most climbers. At Stella Point (5,685m) you stop for a short rest and a chance to see a supremely spectacular sunrise. At Stella Point you join the top part of the Marangu Route; but do not stop here too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to the cold and fatigue. Depending on the season and recent storms, you may encounter snow on your remaining hike along the rim to Uhuru Peak. On the summit, you can enjoy your accomplishment and know that you are creating a day that you will remember for the rest of your life. After your three hour descent from the summit back to Barafu Camp, you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect your gear. You then hike down a rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually through the forest to Mweka Camp (3,100m). This camp is in the upper forest, so you can expect mist or rain in the late afternoon. Dinner, and washing water will be prepared, and the camp office sells drinking water, soft drinks, chocolates and beer! Day 8 - Thursday 19th September Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,980m) Mweka Gate (1,980m) to Moshi (890m) Hiking Time: 3 hours Distance: 15km Habitat: Forest Meals included: breakfast, lunch After a well-deserved early breakfast, it is a short three hour scenic hike back to the park gate. We strongly recommend you not tip your porters until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely. At Mweka gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5,685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. From the Mweka Gate you will continue down into the Mweka Village, normally a muddy 3 km (one hour) hike. In the Mweka Village you will be served a delicious hot lunch. You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations. You stay overnight at the hotel. Day 9 - Friday 20th September Departure from Moshi Today you will book out of your hotel and be driven in the shuttle to Kilimanjaro airport for your return flight home to Australia. Some of you may be staying on to participate in a safari and some people may be travelling on to other destinations in Africa or abroad. Day ten - Saturday 21st September Transit You will travel via Nairobi and Bangkok back to Australia. Day 11 - Sunday 22nd September Welcome home - Share your amazing adventure with your family and friends. Tel: 0407 607 947 Email: darren@wiseleadership.net.au Copyright Peak Potential 2012. • 13. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ How much money do I have to fundraise? The fundraising target consists of two components; the travel costs and the charity portion. The split is approximately 50/50. You are required to fundraise a minimum amount of $7,000. You can of course fundraise above and beyond this target and all additional funds raised will go directly to Make-A-Wish and help us grant the wishes of children with life threatening medical conditions. How do I fundraise the fundraising target? There are four different ways you can raise the fundraising target: 1. You may choose to personally fund the entire amount and claim the minimum charity portion of $7,000 as a tax deductible donation. 2. You can opt to pay for your own travel costs as your annual holiday and fundraise the charity portion. 3. You may choose to fundraise as much as you can and pay the remaining balance yourself. 4. You can fundraise the entire amount; ensuring funds raised towards the travel costs are not raised in the name of ‘Make-A- Wish’ and you are transparent with your donors that their donation will be going towards your travel expenses and are not tax deductible. Will I receive any fundraising support? Once you have registered for the challenge, we will assist you in developing your very own ”fundraising plan”. Peak Potential and Make-A-Wish will be available to support you in your fundraising and ensure you are all on track, offer advice and support where required. How will people know that I am eligible to fundraise for Make-A-Wish? Once you have registered for the challenge, you will receive a Community Fundraising Kit from Make-A-Wish which will include a form outlining “Your responsibilities as a fundraiser”. You will be required to sign and return this form to Make-A-Wish. Once this form is received Make-A-Wish will issue you with an authority to fundraise in the form of a letter. This letter can be shown as proof of eligibility. What is the deadline for raising the money? st The final date for fundraising will be the 1 July 2013. Once you have registered your place on the challenge, we will supply you with a Fundraising Kit which will include a ‘’Countdown Calendar’’. This comprises a schedule listing all the important milestones in the lead up to your trip including payment dates and amounts, and when to arrange your various travel documents. How do I fundraise for the travel component of the target? Many choose to fund their own travel costs, using money normally spent on their annual holiday. Alternatively, you could hold an event or activity for family and friends who are willing to support your personal travel costs. If you choose to fundraise the travel component you must be transparent with your supporters and ensure they are aware that their donation is contributing wholly or partly towards your travel costs. Please note it is important that your supporters understand that their donation will not be given to Make-A-Wish and is therefore not a tax deductible donation but a contribution to your travel expenses. For this reason we are unable to accept funds for the travel component of the trip through your Everyday Hero page as these donations are automatically issued a tax deductible receipt. • 14. ‘Harnessing the Potential Within’ What happens if I don’t fundraise the target in time, can I still go on the challenge? If you fall short of the fundraising target, you can make up the balance yourself and still participate in the challenge. Make-A- Wish and Peak Potential will support you throughout the entire fundraising process. We assist you in setting up an initial fundraising plan (as above) and break the target down into manageable amounts. The experienced Make-A-Wish fundraising team as well as Peak Potential will continually support and monitor your fundraising progress with regular correspondence to assist you in meeting your target. Can I pay the whole amount myself and receive a tax deductible receipt for the charity portion of the target? Definitely, this is a great option if you do not have the time to fundraise but would still like to participate in the challenge whilst supporting Make-A-Wish. If you choose this option only the charity component is tax deductible. Who is eligible to receive a tax deductible receipt for their donation? Any funds raised for the travel costs of the trip are not tax deductible. All other donations (charity component) are eligible, so long as they are over $2.00 and the donor has not received anything in return for their contribution. For example, sponsorship and donations through your online fundraising page are tax deductible, trivia nights and sausage sizzles are not. If any donors require a receipt, you must collect their donation amount and contact information (including the donor's full name and postal address) on the Donor Receipt Form issued to you following approval of the Activity. This must be supplied to Make- A-Wish at the end of your fundraiser. We will then organise and send receipts direct to each donor. It’s important to note that the donor must not receive a material benefit or an advantage by way of return for their donation. For more information on this, go the Australian Tax Office website: www.ato.gov.au If you are unclear as to what is eligible and what is not please do not hesitate to contact Make-A-Wish. How do I collect donations from my supporters via cash/cheque/credit cards? Donations can be collected in the form of cash, cheques or money/postal orders (these should be made out to Make-A-Wish Australia when funds are being raised as part of the charity component of the challenge). Note that this applies to donations only; other payments associated with your fundraising activity (e.g. tickets to an event, or payment for an auction item) should be made out to the relevant business or you as the fundraiser (if you need to pay for expenses out of the revenue raised).
