Canon’s worldwide research and development investment approached $3.0 billion in 2010. Canon’s efforts in this area include a more regional focus in order to develop technologies that meet the specific demands encountered in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.Based upon the number of registered US patents filed by Canon, you can easily conclude that we have spent our Research & Development dollars effectively. Over the last 20 years, Canon has consistently ranked within the top five in this critical category.Canon’s approach to research and development has led to a number of innovative technologies that have pushed our industry forward.
There are many trends and issues impacting business today. It’s important to understand these factors as they shape our business and the decisions we make to keep it moving forward.
Especially in today’s economic climate, companies are constantly in search of greater efficiencies which ultimately lead to changes or re-engineering of their business processes. With the development of technologies that allow for a consolidation of assets, much of this is possible. A good example would be the move from desktop printers in every office to a centralized printer for a department. With the advances in security, it is no longer necessary to have individual printers, allowing for a better cost structure and less assets to control from an IT perspective. With technologies developing so rapidly, it requires that businesses stay ahead in order to stay competitive. Many businesses are also outsourcing functions in order to concentrate on their mission critical responsibilities, yet another trend that impacts the flow of business.Government compliance has played a major role in how we manage our business. Industry specific compliancy such as HIPAA for Healthcare and Sarbanes Oxley which effects most businesses are just two examples. Our industry is changing and there are many trends emerging within the document technology industry which will impact your decision. Information is the lifeblood of an organization. Most documents are now digitized, increasing the ease in which they travel throughout an enterprise in various forms. As end-users become more comfortable with the capabilities afforded by these changes, the demand for further control and efficiency increases.As companies look for areas to positively effect their bottom line, many are seeing the benefits of adapting new document technologies. We live in a world where we see it, we want to print it now. Look at the increasing role of color in the office and how that is changing the way we communicate. And with fleet right-sizing, a well-designed document technology solution can provide an opportunity to reduce costs while increasing productivity.There is a large financial impact on companies to print documents. Another industry trend is for businesses to look at the document output. Here’s a graphical example of the changes in the document flow. In the past, functions were carried out on separate devices, taking both time and money to complete. These statistics were compiled by Gartner Group, an independent research firm that reports on the document management industry.The average business spends up to 3% of their annual revenues on output devices and the necessary supplies that accompany them. But what is most staggering is the amount of time we spend processing documents – an estimated 70% of employee time.The good news is that these factors represent a golden opportunity to realize savings within your business.Every business is different and therefore the roadmap for improved productivity and efficiency varies from company to company.
