Mission
Tates Creek Christian Church exists to win
people to Christ (evangelism), build up believers
in faith, knowledge, and service (encouragement),
to help those in need (benevolence), and to stand up
for Christian values in the community (witness).
On Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 PM, February 26, Dad
made his transition into the Presence of our Lord! Permit me
to share a few thoughts that I expressed in the message at his
funeral. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house,
they labor in vain who build it” (NASB). My Dad built barns for
many years. But more importantly, Dad and Mom built a Christian family.
This legacy of faith did not start with Dad, but he was faithful to continue the
legacy of faith handed to him.
Dad built his Christian family with Faith. Dad became a Christian when
he was twelve or thirteen years old during a revival meeting. When Dad
married Mom, he married a Christian lady. Dad expressed
his faith by remaining faithful to our Lord and His Church.
Any time the church doors were open, we were always there;
always! Dad expressed his faith by reading the Bible; he loved
the history of the Old Testament. Dad expressed his faith by
giving the tithe and oftentimes above the tithe. Dad and Mom
taught us children to tithe. While Dad was building barns, he
never advertised his business in the newspaper. The Lord provided work for
Dad and his crew. Dad expressed his faith through prayer. Before Dad and
his crew raised a barn, Dad would go off by himself and pray, asking the Lord
for safety as they raised the main structure of the barn. When they finished
raising the main structure of the barn, Dad would again go off by himself and
thank the Lord for safety.
Dad also built his Christian family with Work. Dad believed in a very
strong work ethic. Three words describe Dad’s work ethic: fast, competitive,
and quality. He was very quick. He would do his level best to outwork anyone
but, more important to Dad than quickness was quality. When Dad built
barns, he built them right. He was known for quality-built barns.
Dad also built his Christian family with Love. Dad expressed his love
with strong Discipline. He believed firmly in spare the rod and spoil the
child. Sometimes, I thought that Scripture was his favorite. He expressed his
love with generosity. He helped many people financially as well as helping
them with whatever they needed done. Dad expressed his love with fun. He
would rather tease than eat his dinner. And Dad expressed his love through
encouragement. He was always there for us. Always!
Will we join Dad in building Christian families? Will we join Dad in
leaving a Legacy of Faith? Will we join Dad at Jesus’ feet?
We warmly welcome Spring! ~Tommy

Evangelism & Discipleship Ministry
“Front Porch” Evangelism
On a recent trip to my parent’s home in Indiana, I took
note of a book they had lying around which featured
various sorts of residential architecture that we see in
America today. It’s not unusual to see these types of books
around my parents’ home since they’ve done a lot of remodeling over
the years. Their home was built in the late 1960s.
The book included pictures of various types of homes as well as a little
history of each particular style. The book ran the gamut of every style
you could think of...Greek Revival, Victorian, Cape Cod, and even more
contemporary styles. However, my favorites homes are, and always have
been, houses with very large front porches.
The book detailed how the “front porch” is largely gone from most
new American homes these days. As lifestyles have changed, homes
have changed to reflect this. As we have grown increasingly isolated
from one another, people have opted against the open front porch in
favor of a backyard deck surrounded by a yard with a privacy fence.
Gone are the days of sitting on the porch and socializing with the
passersby and community around us.
This reflects knowledge already documented
by social research. In 2006, a study was released
by the American Sociological Review illustrating
that from 1985 to 2004, “the number of people
saying there is no one with whom they discuss
important matters nearly tripled.” The need for
more “front porch” opportunities is great in our
society...a need the church can fill.
How awesome would it be if in the neighborhoods where we live, our
homes were known as the “front porch” of the neighborhood...inviting
neighbors for cookouts, being outside (in the front yard) and visible,
or stopping to talk with neighbors as we’re out on a walk? What great
opportunities might the Lord bring about through those encounters? I
know that we are still in the midst of thawing from this crazy winter, but
perhaps being a “front porch” could be a goal we all set for the warmer
months of 2014.

On our recent trip to the mission in Austria we were
inundated with the news about what was going on in
Kiev. Being on the same continent, in fact being within
almost a day’s drive of where the unrest and violence
was happening, made it all the more real. Though we
were never close to the danger, Peter Penner was making plans to go
to Kiev during the height of the conflict. Peter is on staff with the
mission as an administrator and teacher. Most of us from the states
were concerned with Peter’s plans to go to such a place where danger
abounds, but for Peter it was nothing unusual. You
see everyone who is a Christian in that part of the
world, as well as many other places, lives a life of
danger. Peter was going there to meet with other
Christian leaders to discuss how to better evangelize
Eastern Europe and Central Asia. After thinking
about it for some time I came to the conclusion that
it is our concern with danger here in the American
church that keeps us from going or doing what might
make us a little uncomfortable. It was Peter’s belief that the cause of
Christ is worth the danger. I was humbled by that attitude. I was also
convicted with the understanding that my seeking safety rather than
sharing the Gospel, which might be uncomfortable or even dangerous
for me, is making the decision that I deserve safety while others are
in danger of being lost. I’m convinced that we all need to live a little
more dangerously so that those who are in danger might find the hope
of salvation.
Senior adults, remember the upcoming BWAC meeting. April’s
meeting is Thursday, April 17, and the program will be “Remember
When” karaoke. It will be lots of fun and there is always a great meal.
If you haven’t joined us for BWAC this would be a great time to get
involved. It meets the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Fellowship
Hall and begins at 10:30 am. We hope to see you there.
Our day trip for April will be Thursday, April 24, and we’ll be going to
the Newport Aquarium in Cincinnati. These trips are always great
get-aways, so be sure to sign up and ride along.

Don’s Dynamics
O Sacred Head Now Wounded
O sacred Head now wounded,
With grief and shame weighed down,
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown:
How pale Thou art with anguish,
With sore abuse and scorn,
How does that visage languish
Which once was bright as morn!
Text: Bernard of Clairvaux; Tune: Passion Chorale
So begins the text to one of the most powerful songs to be composed
depicting the crucifixion of our Lord. Space does not permit to print the
remaining two stanzas, but you may read through them in most hymnals.
This chorale is one of many powerful songs to remind us of the suffering of
our Lord and His victory over the grave.
For several years, we have provided an intimate time of worship on Good
Friday and on several occasions this has featured appropriate music by our
Worship Choir. We will offer this worship experience again this year on
April 18, at 7:00 pm, in our Worship Center. This year, we will also include
the Rejoicing Ringers as they provide arrangements for hand bell choir. We
invite you to attend and to bring others to join you in this special focus. As
has been our tradition, we will conclude this service with a time for reflection
through the Lord’s Supper.
We celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, April 20, with
special worship times to accommodate the larger crowds. Traditional
Worship will be held at 8:00 am, Blended Worship at 9:30 am, and
Contemporary Worship at 11:10 am. The Worship Choir and Orchestra will
lead our Traditional and Blended services. Please plan to arrive early so that
you will not miss a minute of our celebration!
In addition to these special worship times, we come to the
last event in this year’s concert series for the spring months as
we host the OLLI @ UK Chorus for their Spring Concert on
April 26 at 3:00 pm. Other concerts are scheduled for summer
and fall through the Gospel Concert series. Please refer to
the special brochure that is available in our Main Foyer. On a
personal note, my thanks to those who attended my Concert of
Spirituals on February 23.

This past weekend, Travis, Clare, and I made our first trip
to Nekempte since moving to Ethiopia. The occasion, we’ve
got to have those work permit papers signed so we can stay
legal! Travis and I were both excited about the trip...finally
we get to go see the city where we will eventually make our
home. Yes, we’ve been there before, but 24 hours, two years ago, hardly
counts. So we made our way down to Nekempte on a beautiful, newly
paved, winding road. It is dry season here, but the land and the farms still
amazed us with their beauty.
We finally arrived at 8:30 in the evening, hoping
to meet Negatu and Dhaba for dinner. Negatu and
Dhaba are the church leaders in Nekempte who are
signing our paperwork for our work permits. They are
telling the Ethiopian government that we are here to
provide a service to the church that cannot be filled by
an Ethiopian. They believe that our seminary education and development
training can help the church both in biblical training and with income
generating projects. We feel the weight of responsibility- both to God and
to this church- to be faithful, work hard, and do our part.
In the end, we did share a meal (even though it was late), Negatu signed
our paperwork, and we spent the night at the church, because there was
no room in the inn...or any inn for that matter. We also remembered
something very important--we are not just here to give, we are here to
receive. The church here has a lot to teach us and so much love, hospitality
and friendship to extend to us...all we have to do is open our hearts and our
hands.
We love and miss you all. Please keep us and the ministry here in your
prayers.

The Empty Tomb
First, I wish to express my honor in the opportunity
to address the family of Tates Creek Christian Church.
For the past eight years I have called this place my
home. By His grace I have experienced great joy in
serving and worshiping with each of you. Our Lord
works in mighty ways and His provisions
are far greater than we can even desire. I
often find myself amazed by His grace and
His mercy. May we awake each day with the
desire to be more like Jesus in every aspect of
our lives.
Throughout Scripture we find beautiful
and powerful images of our Christ, Jesus.
However, to me there is none quite as
beautiful as the resurrection. In Isaiah His
word tells us that He was pierced for our
transgressions and by His wounds we have been healed (Isaiah
53:5). The image of Christ on the cross of Calvary gives us great
strength and on that cross the penalty of our sins was paid.
But, for all Christians, it is the empty tomb that gives us our
greatest hope, and without it death would have remained victorious.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that the resurrection of Christ is to
be the validity of all we proclaim. Without the risen Jesus, even
our faith would be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:13-14). To be very
blunt, if Christ had not risen, then all in which we believe would be
worthless and have NO truth!
As the body of believers, may this be our charge, wherever we go
and in whatever we do: proclaim He has risen and He is at the right
hand of the Father!

Makayla Barker is a student in the Middle School ministry
who has attended the weekend conference ‘Believe’ with us
for three years. We asked her to share her experience of the
conference over the years for the Current.
I decided to go to Believe the first time because I had gone
to SuperStart the year before and I really enjoyed my time there. I
thought it would be a good way to bond with other middle school
students and get to know everybody a little better.
My favorite part of Believe this year was being able to spend time
with my friends and grow closer to God. While there, I tried to
be an example for my sixth grade friends, to let them know that
I’m always available. If they need to talk about anything they can
come to me and it’s just between us. It’s great to have a bonding
experience like this with everyone.
Believe has helped me as a Christian because in sixth grade we
heard a really powerful story and message on Saturday. That’s
when I decided I was ready to be baptized. Of course, it wasn’t
until seventh grade that I actually stopped procrastinating about
it. That year when we came back from Believe I was baptized on a
Wednesday night. I’m so happy that I got to share that experience
with so many Christians! It was a very uplifting time and it really
made Believe a special time in my life. I am sad that this was my last
year, but I know that I will go onto bigger and better things in High
School.

Leaving a Legacy
Do you ever think about what kind of legacy you
are leaving?
Brad Haggard recently got me
on to ancestry.com where you
can trace your family line back
through history by having access to public
records. I have traced the Allen name all the
way back to the 1500’s in England so far! I
discovered that one of my grandfathers, Isaac
Allen, fought in the Revolutionary War under
the direct command of George Rogers Clark;
fascinating! And also that Ethan Allen (look
him up) is a brother of one of my great-great (etc.) grandfathers. It
was fascinating to be able to look back and see where I’ve come
from and what my family has been through over hundreds of
years. I wonder if someday a descendent of mine will be able to
look back and be proud of the legacy that I left behind. I want to
leave a legacy of faith.
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the funeral of William
W. Simpson, Tommy’s father. It was amazing to hear the stories
of his influence and to actually see just how many people were
touched by his life and the life of his family. Billy left a legacy of
faith for his family. It was such an inspiring experience for me to
experience the effects of this man’s great faith.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of the influence you have in
your own family. If you are like me, you might be only the first
or second generation of Christ followers in
your family tree. If we are diligent though, one
day, generations in the future, our descendants
will be able to look back and see the great
legacy of faith and a family committed to the
mission of Jesus Christ! I pray that if Jesus
hasn’t returned, that my descendants will draw
strength in their own faith from that legacy.
What legacy are you leaving?

The Future of the Church
Every year the middle school group from church
goes to a weekend conference held by Christ
In Youth called “Believe”. This is the spiritual
highlight for the students who go, and for good
reason. The worship is high energy, the speaking
is directed towards them, the
video production is top-notch, and
probably most important, they get
to spend it with their good friends.
This particular weekend has been
growing for some time, and this
year the Bank of Kentucky Arena
was bursting at the seams with 6,000 middle school students! It
was tough even to move around between sessions.
While in one of the worship sessions I looked at the huge
crowd of students around the stage singing their heart out in
worship, and it made me think about all of the negativity we
hear concerning today’s students and the future of the church.
People outside of the church are proclaiming a future collapse of
the church and it’s influence, but what this conference illustrated
most clearly to me is that God is raising up a generation of
Christians to carry the banner.
Especially in our group of students,
the commitment to Christ and
God’s Kingdom is sincere, and it
changes their lives!
So more than anything else I left
encouraged that God is working
not just in the lives of our students
here at Tates Creek Christian Church, but in churches all over
the country. And as the conference grows to the point that we
don’t have room in an arena anymore, I remember that God is at
work all over the world to build His Kingdom!

Willing Volunteers Make A Difference
Over the past three months I have been humbled
and greatly blessed by amazing and willing volunteers
in the Elementary Ministry! What do you do as the
leader in children’s ministry when Sunday or a special
event is coming quickly and as the leader you can’t
be present? Do you cancel the special event, make plans for family
Sunday, or put your trust into the hands of incredible volunteers? At
Tates Creek Christian Church we do option 3. Here is the story

On Christmas Day, my wife’s grandmother
passed away. Within minutes the normal
Sunday schedule changed leaders and never
skipped a beat. Volunteers like Pam Bolt, Mary
Beth Long, Ellie Mullins, and Aly Thompson
along with the always faithful team already
scheduled took over!
Then, the day before Valentine’s Day I came down with a 48 hour
flu followed by bronchitis. Again, on Sunday the team took over
and the children experienced worship, Bible story, Sunday School,
and fellowship like normal!
Finally, the last Sunday of February brought the passing of my
grandfather while an Elementary Movie Night was planned that
coming Friday. For a moment it was considered to postpone the
event until Erika Hranicky, Larry and Brenda Critchfield, Barbara
Slusher, Stephanie Wheeler, Brad Wheeler, Darren Banks, Marlee
Mirre, Kaitlyn Long, and MacKenzie Mirre took over. When my
family came to the event on Friday (just a few hours after my
grandfather’s graveside service) we became part of the crowd of
kids while the team continued leading.
To the many people who serve in children’s ministry with a
willing, ready, and flexible heart I want to say thank you! You make
a difference in every child’s life, but in the past three months you
have richly blessed this children’s minister! I believe I serve with the
best group of servants in children’s ministry and love to watch you
grow as you serve!
If you ever want to see this team in action, want to be part of the
growing group of volunteers in children’s ministry, OR want to
know more come see me in Uptown sometime! You will quickly
agree with me
 willing volunteers make a difference!!

Critterland News
Critterland has certainly been busy the past few
months. The children have been learning such great
lessons, and I think one of our most important is
that God is always listening, no matter what. We
continually tell the children that they are able to speak to God
whenever they want - riding in the car, when they are eating a
snack, or playing in the park. We encourage the children to pray
when they are both happy and sad.
As an adult I sometimes forget that I need to pray not just
when I am upset or need something, but also when I have great
news to share or am just having a wonderful day. That’s one of
the things I love about working with the children
 the simple
lessons that we forget as we grow older are always right there to
remember.

Maggie is eleven years old and was
baptized on February 18th. She is very
excited to be a new Christian. Maggie
stated that she “wants to follow in the
path of Jesus.” Helping Maggie on this
important path is Tonja and Todd, her
mother and father. They were baptized
just over one year ago. Maggie attends
Veteran’s Park Elementary and is sure
to be a light to everyone she meets. Be
sure to encourge Maggie as she follows
the path Jesus has for her.

Kenneth comes to us from Radcliffe,
Kentucky. He has been attending Tates
Creek since last fall but just moved to
Lexington a few weeks ago. Kenneth
works for the Defense Contracting
Management Agency. He has also
found a home here at Tates Creek
with the encouragement of friends,
Larry and Martha Bugg. We warmly
welcome this couple to Tates Creek.
Janet was born and raised here in
Lexington and has been attending
Tates Creek for about a year now. She
is an Associate Director with inVentiv
Health and works with Martha Bugg.
Janet and Kenneth were looking for a
new church home and found it here at
Tates Creek where they attend The Vine
worship. Her favorite verse is John
3:16, as she puts it “God gave his only
Son for us.”

  • 3. On Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 PM, February 26, Dad made his transition into the Presence of our Lord! Permit me to share a few thoughts that I expressed in the message at his funeral. Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (NASB). My Dad built barns for many years. But more importantly, Dad and Mom built a Christian family. This legacy of faith did not start with Dad, but he was faithful to continue the legacy of faith handed to him. Dad built his Christian family with Faith. Dad became a Christian when he was twelve or thirteen years old during a revival meeting. When Dad married Mom, he married a Christian lady. Dad expressed his faith by remaining faithful to our Lord and His Church. Any time the church doors were open, we were always there; always! Dad expressed his faith by reading the Bible; he loved the history of the Old Testament. Dad expressed his faith by giving the tithe and oftentimes above the tithe. Dad and Mom taught us children to tithe. While Dad was building barns, he never advertised his business in the newspaper. The Lord provided work for Dad and his crew. Dad expressed his faith through prayer. Before Dad and his crew raised a barn, Dad would go off by himself and pray, asking the Lord for safety as they raised the main structure of the barn. When they finished raising the main structure of the barn, Dad would again go off by himself and thank the Lord for safety. Dad also built his Christian family with Work. Dad believed in a very strong work ethic. Three words describe Dad’s work ethic: fast, competitive, and quality. He was very quick. He would do his level best to outwork anyone but, more important to Dad than quickness was quality. When Dad built barns, he built them right. He was known for quality-built barns. Dad also built his Christian family with Love. Dad expressed his love with strong Discipline. He believed firmly in spare the rod and spoil the child. Sometimes, I thought that Scripture was his favorite. He expressed his love with generosity. He helped many people financially as well as helping them with whatever they needed done. Dad expressed his love with fun. He would rather tease than eat his dinner. And Dad expressed his love through encouragement. He was always there for us. Always! Will we join Dad in building Christian families? Will we join Dad in leaving a Legacy of Faith? Will we join Dad at Jesus’ feet? We warmly welcome Spring! ~Tommy tommy@tatescreek.org Tidbits from Tommy 3 Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org
  • 4. Tates Creek Christian Church 3150 Tates Creek Road 4 Evangelism & Discipleship Ministry “Front Porch” Evangelism On a recent trip to my parent’s home in Indiana, I took note of a book they had lying around which featured various sorts of residential architecture that we see in America today. It’s not unusual to see these types of books around my parents’ home since they’ve done a lot of remodeling over the years. Their home was built in the late 1960s. The book included pictures of various types of homes as well as a little history of each particular style. The book ran the gamut of every style you could think of...Greek Revival, Victorian, Cape Cod, and even more contemporary styles. However, my favorites homes are, and always have been, houses with very large front porches. The book detailed how the “front porch” is largely gone from most new American homes these days. As lifestyles have changed, homes have changed to reflect this. As we have grown increasingly isolated from one another, people have opted against the open front porch in favor of a backyard deck surrounded by a yard with a privacy fence. Gone are the days of sitting on the porch and socializing with the passersby and community around us. This reflects knowledge already documented by social research. In 2006, a study was released by the American Sociological Review illustrating that from 1985 to 2004, “the number of people saying there is no one with whom they discuss important matters nearly tripled.” The need for more “front porch” opportunities is great in our society...a need the church can fill. How awesome would it be if in the neighborhoods where we live, our homes were known as the “front porch” of the neighborhood...inviting neighbors for cookouts, being outside (in the front yard) and visible, or stopping to talk with neighbors as we’re out on a walk? What great opportunities might the Lord bring about through those encounters? I know that we are still in the midst of thawing from this crazy winter, but perhaps being a “front porch” could be a goal we all set for the warmer months of 2014. ~In Christ, Nic nic@tatescreek.org
  • 5. Senior Adults 5 Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org On our recent trip to the mission in Austria we were inundated with the news about what was going on in Kiev. Being on the same continent, in fact being within almost a day’s drive of where the unrest and violence was happening, made it all the more real. Though we were never close to the danger, Peter Penner was making plans to go to Kiev during the height of the conflict. Peter is on staff with the mission as an administrator and teacher. Most of us from the states were concerned with Peter’s plans to go to such a place where danger abounds, but for Peter it was nothing unusual. You see everyone who is a Christian in that part of the world, as well as many other places, lives a life of danger. Peter was going there to meet with other Christian leaders to discuss how to better evangelize Eastern Europe and Central Asia. After thinking about it for some time I came to the conclusion that it is our concern with danger here in the American church that keeps us from going or doing what might make us a little uncomfortable. It was Peter’s belief that the cause of Christ is worth the danger. I was humbled by that attitude. I was also convicted with the understanding that my seeking safety rather than sharing the Gospel, which might be uncomfortable or even dangerous for me, is making the decision that I deserve safety while others are in danger of being lost. I’m convinced that we all need to live a little more dangerously so that those who are in danger might find the hope of salvation. Senior adults, remember the upcoming BWAC meeting. April’s meeting is Thursday, April 17, and the program will be “Remember When” karaoke. It will be lots of fun and there is always a great meal. If you haven’t joined us for BWAC this would be a great time to get involved. It meets the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Fellowship Hall and begins at 10:30 am. We hope to see you there. Our day trip for April will be Thursday, April 24, and we’ll be going to the Newport Aquarium in Cincinnati. These trips are always great get-aways, so be sure to sign up and ride along. ~Bro. • 6. Tates Creek Christian Church 3150 Tates Creek Road 6 Don’s Dynamics O Sacred Head Now Wounded O sacred Head now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded With thorns Thine only crown: How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn, How does that visage languish Which once was bright as morn! Text: Bernard of Clairvaux; Tune: Passion Chorale So begins the text to one of the most powerful songs to be composed depicting the crucifixion of our Lord. Space does not permit to print the remaining two stanzas, but you may read through them in most hymnals. This chorale is one of many powerful songs to remind us of the suffering of our Lord and His victory over the grave. For several years, we have provided an intimate time of worship on Good Friday and on several occasions this has featured appropriate music by our Worship Choir. We will offer this worship experience again this year on April 18, at 7:00 pm, in our Worship Center. This year, we will also include the Rejoicing Ringers as they provide arrangements for hand bell choir. We invite you to attend and to bring others to join you in this special focus. As has been our tradition, we will conclude this service with a time for reflection through the Lord’s Supper. We celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, April 20, with special worship times to accommodate the larger crowds. Traditional Worship will be held at 8:00 am, Blended Worship at 9:30 am, and Contemporary Worship at 11:10 am. The Worship Choir and Orchestra will lead our Traditional and Blended services. Please plan to arrive early so that you will not miss a minute of our celebration! In addition to these special worship times, we come to the last event in this year’s concert series for the spring months as we host the OLLI @ UK Chorus for their Spring Concert on April 26 at 3:00 pm. Other concerts are scheduled for summer and fall through the Gospel Concert series. Please refer to the special brochure that is available in our Main Foyer. On a personal note, my thanks to those who attended my Concert of Spirituals on February 23. ~ Don don@tatescreek.org
  • 7. This past weekend, Travis, Clare, and I made our first trip to Nekempte since moving to Ethiopia. The occasion, we’ve got to have those work permit papers signed so we can stay legal! Travis and I were both excited about the trip...finally we get to go see the city where we will eventually make our home. Yes, we’ve been there before, but 24 hours, two years ago, hardly counts. So we made our way down to Nekempte on a beautiful, newly paved, winding road. It is dry season here, but the land and the farms still amazed us with their beauty. We finally arrived at 8:30 in the evening, hoping to meet Negatu and Dhaba for dinner. Negatu and Dhaba are the church leaders in Nekempte who are signing our paperwork for our work permits. They are telling the Ethiopian government that we are here to provide a service to the church that cannot be filled by an Ethiopian. They believe that our seminary education and development training can help the church both in biblical training and with income generating projects. We feel the weight of responsibility- both to God and to this church- to be faithful, work hard, and do our part. In the end, we did share a meal (even though it was late), Negatu signed our paperwork, and we spent the night at the church, because there was no room in the inn...or any inn for that matter. We also remembered something very important--we are not just here to give, we are here to receive. The church here has a lot to teach us and so much love, hospitality and friendship to extend to us...all we have to do is open our hearts and our hands. We love and miss you all. Please keep us and the ministry here in your prayers. ~ Emily, Travis, and Clare Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org Missions Moment Weeks Family 7 Pray for all of our Missionaries Ethiopia ~ Travis & Emily Weeks & Adrian & Jennifer Fehl Tanzania ~ Steve & Doretha Limiero Global Community Health Evangelism ~ Judy Fish Kenya ~ Shawn & Kristin Redford Mexico ~ Sergio & Holly Alvarado, Greg & Vicki Syverson U.S. ~ New York City ~ Jonathan & Jubi Williams

  • 10. Tates Creek Christian Church 3150 Tates Creek Road 10 The Empty Tomb First, I wish to express my honor in the opportunity to address the family of Tates Creek Christian Church. For the past eight years I have called this place my home. By His grace I have experienced great joy in serving and worshiping with each of you. Our Lord works in mighty ways and His provisions are far greater than we can even desire. I often find myself amazed by His grace and His mercy. May we awake each day with the desire to be more like Jesus in every aspect of our lives. Throughout Scripture we find beautiful and powerful images of our Christ, Jesus. However, to me there is none quite as beautiful as the resurrection. In Isaiah His word tells us that He was pierced for our transgressions and by His wounds we have been healed (Isaiah 53:5). The image of Christ on the cross of Calvary gives us great strength and on that cross the penalty of our sins was paid. But, for all Christians, it is the empty tomb that gives us our greatest hope, and without it death would have remained victorious. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that the resurrection of Christ is to be the validity of all we proclaim. Without the risen Jesus, even our faith would be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:13-14). To be very blunt, if Christ had not risen, then all in which we believe would be worthless and have NO truth! As the body of believers, may this be our charge, wherever we go and in whatever we do: proclaim He has risen and He is at the right hand of the Father! ~ Nick Wallen
  • 11. Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org 11 Makayla Barker is a student in the Middle School ministry who has attended the weekend conference ‘Believe’ with us for three years. We asked her to share her experience of the conference over the years for the Current. I decided to go to Believe the first time because I had gone to SuperStart the year before and I really enjoyed my time there. I thought it would be a good way to bond with other middle school students and get to know everybody a little better. My favorite part of Believe this year was being able to spend time with my friends and grow closer to God. While there, I tried to be an example for my sixth grade friends, to let them know that I’m always available. If they need to talk about anything they can come to me and it’s just between us. It’s great to have a bonding experience like this with everyone. Believe has helped me as a Christian because in sixth grade we heard a really powerful story and message on Saturday. That’s when I decided I was ready to be baptized. Of course, it wasn’t until seventh grade that I actually stopped procrastinating about it. That year when we came back from Believe I was baptized on a Wednesday night. I’m so happy that I got to share that experience with so many Christians! It was a very uplifting time and it really made Believe a special time in my life. I am sad that this was my last year, but I know that I will go onto bigger and better things in High School. ~ Makayla Barker Believe Conference

  • 14. Leaving a Legacy Do you ever think about what kind of legacy you are leaving? Brad Haggard recently got me on to ancestry.com where you can trace your family line back through history by having access to public records. I have traced the Allen name all the way back to the 1500’s in England so far! I discovered that one of my grandfathers, Isaac Allen, fought in the Revolutionary War under the direct command of George Rogers Clark; fascinating! And also that Ethan Allen (look him up) is a brother of one of my great-great (etc.) grandfathers. It was fascinating to be able to look back and see where I’ve come from and what my family has been through over hundreds of years. I wonder if someday a descendent of mine will be able to look back and be proud of the legacy that I left behind. I want to leave a legacy of faith. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the funeral of William W. Simpson, Tommy’s father. It was amazing to hear the stories of his influence and to actually see just how many people were touched by his life and the life of his family. Billy left a legacy of faith for his family. It was such an inspiring experience for me to experience the effects of this man’s great faith. Don’t ever underestimate the power of the influence you have in your own family. If you are like me, you might be only the first or second generation of Christ followers in your family tree. If we are diligent though, one day, generations in the future, our descendants will be able to look back and see the great legacy of faith and a family committed to the mission of Jesus Christ! I pray that if Jesus hasn’t returned, that my descendants will draw strength in their own faith from that legacy. What legacy are you leaving? • 15. The Future of the Church Every year the middle school group from church goes to a weekend conference held by Christ In Youth called “Believe”. This is the spiritual highlight for the students who go, and for good reason. The worship is high energy, the speaking is directed towards them, the video production is top-notch, and probably most important, they get to spend it with their good friends. This particular weekend has been growing for some time, and this year the Bank of Kentucky Arena was bursting at the seams with 6,000 middle school students! It was tough even to move around between sessions. While in one of the worship sessions I looked at the huge crowd of students around the stage singing their heart out in worship, and it made me think about all of the negativity we hear concerning today’s students and the future of the church. People outside of the church are proclaiming a future collapse of the church and it’s influence, but what this conference illustrated most clearly to me is that God is raising up a generation of Christians to carry the banner. Especially in our group of students, the commitment to Christ and God’s Kingdom is sincere, and it changes their lives! So more than anything else I left encouraged that God is working not just in the lives of our students here at Tates Creek Christian Church, but in churches all over the country. And as the conference grows to the point that we don’t have room in an arena anymore, I remember that God is at work all over the world to build His Kingdom! Let’s lift Him up together! ~ Brad brad@tatescreek.org 15 Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org StudentMinistryBradHaggard
  • 16. Willing Volunteers Make A Difference Over the past three months I have been humbled and greatly blessed by amazing and willing volunteers in the Elementary Ministry! What do you do as the leader in children’s ministry when Sunday or a special event is coming quickly and as the leader you can’t be present? Do you cancel the special event, make plans for family Sunday, or put your trust into the hands of incredible volunteers? At Tates Creek Christian Church we do option 3. Here is the story
On Christmas Day, my wife’s grandmother passed away. Within minutes the normal Sunday schedule changed leaders and never skipped a beat. Volunteers like Pam Bolt, Mary Beth Long, Ellie Mullins, and Aly Thompson along with the always faithful team already scheduled took over! Then, the day before Valentine’s Day I came down with a 48 hour flu followed by bronchitis. Again, on Sunday the team took over and the children experienced worship, Bible story, Sunday School, and fellowship like normal! Finally, the last Sunday of February brought the passing of my grandfather while an Elementary Movie Night was planned that coming Friday. For a moment it was considered to postpone the event until Erika Hranicky, Larry and Brenda Critchfield, Barbara Slusher, Stephanie Wheeler, Brad Wheeler, Darren Banks, Marlee Mirre, Kaitlyn Long, and MacKenzie Mirre took over. When my family came to the event on Friday (just a few hours after my grandfather’s graveside service) we became part of the crowd of kids while the team continued leading. To the many people who serve in children’s ministry with a willing, ready, and flexible heart I want to say thank you! You make a difference in every child’s life, but in the past three months you have richly blessed this children’s minister! I believe I serve with the best group of servants in children’s ministry and love to watch you grow as you serve! If you ever want to see this team in action, want to be part of the growing group of volunteers in children’s ministry, OR want to know more come see me in Uptown sometime! You will quickly agree with me

  • 17. Critterland News Critterland has certainly been busy the past few months. The children have been learning such great lessons, and I think one of our most important is that God is always listening, no matter what. We continually tell the children that they are able to speak to God whenever they want - riding in the car, when they are eating a snack, or playing in the park. We encourage the children to pray when they are both happy and sad. As an adult I sometimes forget that I need to pray not just when I am upset or need something, but also when I have great news to share or am just having a wonderful day. That’s one of the things I love about working with the children
the simple lessons that we forget as we grow older are always right there to remember. ~ Lesley lesley@tatescreek.org 17 Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org PreschoolMinistryLesleyTipton

  • 19. Maggie is eleven years old and was baptized on February 18th. She is very excited to be a new Christian. Maggie stated that she “wants to follow in the path of Jesus.” Helping Maggie on this important path is Tonja and Todd, her mother and father. They were baptized just over one year ago. Maggie attends Veteran’s Park Elementary and is sure to be a light to everyone she meets. Be sure to encourge Maggie as she follows the path Jesus has for her. 19 Lexington, KY 40502 www.tatescreek.org Janet Humphrey By Transfer, March 9 Kenneth Melton Baptized March 20 New Members Maggie Maynard Baptized February 18 Kenneth comes to us from Radcliffe, Kentucky.
