CartoSet is a new Open Source framework to develop great geospatial websites. Based on the experience by Vizzuality developing highly visual geospatial websites, like protectedplanet.net, CartoSet is a Ruby on Rails framework based on CartoDB. Despite the number of existing geoportal websites none of them allow the creation of highly customized interfaces. On the other hand libraries like geoRuby provide great foundation but still it takes too much time to develop nice websites. CartoSet is a FOSS framework in the middle, allowing great customization but providing an easy building block for agile developers.

Like many IT projects Atlassian started using Magnolia CMS in a pilot to see if it would fulfill our needs. We took advantage of the built in translation and templating to deliver "iWAC" an internationalized version of our website in a matter of months. Even after a successful pilot there were still concerns from our IT guys about scale. All of those concerns went away when we launched Angry Nerds, a site that went viral and brought us traffic that would have crippled our old infrastructure. Suddenly it went from how well does Magnolia scale to how fast can we migrate. This pilot led to a year long redesign of our entire website including a complete rebrand which is all deployed on Magnolia CMS. This talk will cover our path from pilot to production and all the fun stops in between.

This talk will provide an overview of the PaaS (Platform as a Service) landscape, and will describe the Cloud Foundry open source PaaS, with its multi-framework, multi-service, multi-cloud model. Cloud Foundry allows developers to provision apps in Java/Spring, Ruby/Rails, Ruby/Sinatra, Javascript/Node, and leverage services like MySQL, MongoDB, Reddis, Postgres and RabbitMQ. It can be used as a public PaaS on CloudFoundry.com and other service providers (ActiveState, AppFog), to create your own private cloud, or on your laptop using the Micro Cloud Foundry VM. Micro Cloud Foundry is a very easy way for developers to start working on their application using their framework of choice and MongoDB, without the need to setup a development environment, and your app is one command line away (vmc push) from deployment to cloudfoundry.com.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
