2. THE CAPTIVE
By Director Atom Egoyan, who makes his sixth appearance at Cannes, The
Captive is an abduction thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman and
Rosario Dawson.
3. CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA
Director Olivier Assayas’ drama follows an actress (Juliette Binoche) who
withdraws to the city of Sils Maria with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to
perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years earlier.
While in Sils Maria she meets an unsettling young version of herself (Chloe
Grace Moretz).
4. FOXCATCHER
From the Director of Capote and Moneyball, Bennett Miller, and starring
Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher follows the
murder of Olympic wrestling champion Dave Schultz.
5. GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE
Jean-Luc Godard returns to Cannes with Goodbye to Language, a love story
following a man and a woman, with a stray dog that finds its way between
them. The film has been shot entirely in 3D.
6. THE HOMESMAN
Directed by Tommy Lee Jones, The Homesman follows George Briggs (Jones)
as he escorts Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) and three clinically insane
patients across the Midwest.
7. JIMMY’S HALL
Ken Loach makes his 12th appearance at Cannes with the fiction feature
Jimmy's Hall, following Irish communist leader James Gralton.
8. LEVIATHAN
In the modern re-imagining of the biblical tale of the Book of Job, Leviathan
presents elements of sci-fi, drama and Russian societal critique.
9. MAPS TO THE STARS
David Cronenberg, Director of Cosmopolis starring Robert Pattinson, returns
to Cannes with Maps to the the Stars, a satire of the entertainment industry
featuring Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, and John Cusack.
10. MOMMY
By one of the youngest Directors in the competition, Xavier Dolan (age 25),
Mommy follows a relationship between a widowed single mother and violent
son, who find hope when a new neighbour comes between them.
11. MR. TURNER
Director Mike Leigh returns to Cannes with Mr. Turner, the biopic following the
story of renowned British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), played by Timothy
Spall. Deeply affected by his father’s death, Turner travels, paints, and
eventually forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady.
12. SAINT LAURENT
The biopic following legendary French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent
and starring Gaspard Ulliel, Louis Garrel and Lea Seydoux marks Director
Bertrand Bonello’s third appearance at Cannes.
13. THE SEARCH
Returning to the festival after his prize-winning film The Artist, Michel
Hazanavicius tells the story of the friendship between an NGO worker and a
young boy in Chechnya. The film is a remake of Fred Zinnermann’s Academy-
Award winning 1948 feature of the same title.
14. STILL THE WATER
Director Naomi Kawase’s story follows a young couple trying to solve a
mysterious death on the Japanese island of Amami-Oshima .
15. TIMBUKTU
Director Abderrahmane Sissako, who previously made an appearance at
Cannes with the 2006 film Bamako, tells the story of a Malian couple stoned
to death for failing to marry before God.
16. TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT
Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Marion Cotillard plays a young woman
who has one weekend to convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses so
she can keep her job.
18. WINTER SLEEP
Former actor Aydin, his wife Nihal, and his sister Necia manage a small hotel
in Central America. Animosity is ignited when a snow storm turns the hotel
into a safe shelter.
19. THE WONDERS
The Wonders, by Italian Cannes veteran Alice Rohrwacher, follows a 14-year-
old girl living in the Umbrian countryside whose life is altered by a German
ex-con.
