West begins in 18th century

Franz Anton Mesmer.
Mesmer believed that
all disease was
caused by imbalance
of โmagnetic fluidโ.

spectacular healings.
His healing techniques
incorporated the use
of magnets and

11. One of Mesmerโs followers, Marquis de
Puysegur, while experimenting with
a simple peasant boy,
produced the โsleeping
stageโ. He discovered
that in this state, the
boy talked more
intelligently than when
wide-awake.

12. Portuguese monk, Abbe Faria, learned
to produce somnambulist state
by gazing steadily at
the patient and then
shouting โSleep!โ
He proclaimed that the
cause of trance rested
with the patient and
not with the operator.

13. Dr. James Esdaile began to experiment
with mesmerism in India.
He performed several
thousand minor and
300 major operations.
He reduced death rate
from 50% to 5% using
mesmerism.

14. Dr. James Braid attended a public
performance of mesmerism with
intent to expose Swiss
mesmerist Lafontaine
as a charlatan. He was
astounded to find that
the phenomena of
trance were real.

from the fatigue of eyes and
coined the word
โhypnotismโ after the
Greek god of sleep Hypnos. He soon realized
that hypnosis was not
