This session will explore how libraries are utilizing social media tools, Open Source soft-ware, and mobile devices to offer new services and interact with library patrons. Topics covered include iPad apps, Foursquare, LibX.
This morning I am going to walk you through a short, but informative smorgasbord of technology. We will look at 3 tools.
The first one is LibX – a toolbar that sits on top of your Web browser and gives your patrons easy access to your library resources, wherever they are on the web. Used by a few academic libraries, not used much by public libraries but it should be used more often.
When our patrons go on the web, where do they go? It’s easy, simple, straightforward and branded as the places to go.
Lots of links, lots of text. Not easy to search. Replace this image? Look at other library websites, find one without a text box? Not BRANDED as the place to go.
Helps you to BRAND your library as the search tool to use.
Toughest part is not configuring the tool, it’s marketing and training.
Patrons are always checking items in and out of the library, with tools like 4square, patrons can check THEMSELVES into the library.
Benefits – lighter than a laptop, long battery life Other uses: with small groups as a social tool Acknowledge competitors, iPad limitations: getting docs in/out display adapters Flash limited font choices
