Get pupils to talk about the picture. Where do the smurfs live in? (Toad stools). What are they? (mushrooms) They fall under this broad category called fungi. Mushroom is the most common fungi and that’s what we are going to learn more about today.
Let’s watch this video to learn more about fungi. Do you think fungi are plants? Keep this question in mind when we do the individual and group activity. I will ask you all again once you are done with the activities.
Remind pupils to be careful with magnifying glass as it is fragile. Pupils will bear the cost if they break it.
To be pasted in your science journals at the end of the lesson.
Based on your observations, you will now get into your groups for a discussion.
All your sweets will be returned to you tomorrow if all of you cooperate well today.
Draw these tables in your butcher paper for the groups assigned this, discuss with your group mates and complete the table. At least 1 point per question. You may draw pictures to show the differences and similarities. No need to take notes as I will be displaying the tables when you start on your group work.

Just a reminder for all the groups. Writers draw the tables your group is assigned and you may begin your discussion. I will show this slide again during the group discussion. You have another 10 min for this.
From your discussion, is fungi a plant? Remember this flow chart, today we are looking at fungi
This is the underside of a mushroom and if you look closely the white specks in between the gills are your spores. You will be getting a copy of this when we do our activity book.
We don’t eat all mushrooms. Some wild ones are poisonous like toadstool. I want you all to go to Edmodo and share with me and the class examples of edible mushrooms and the non-edible ones.
I have uploaded a video on Edmodo for you to watch on how to make a yeast bread.
We are going to watch a video on what yeast likes to eat. Ask pupils after watching the video, what did you learnt about yeast and what is yeast favourite food?
