These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled Biz Models for Hi-Tech Products to analyze the business model for Slack, a supplier of collaborative tools for teams. These tools offer a new form of mail service that is very different from that of traditional e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook, G-Mail, and Yahoo-Mail. Slack designed its mail service for the cloud computing environment, as opposed to the traditional in-house computing environment. Accessing documents from the cloud is easier with Slack’s service than with Microsoft Outlook as is enabling apps for Slack’s service and reading messages. Reading messages is easier because they are organized by person (like instant messaging on smart phones) as opposed to time. By measuring usage, Slack can charge by active user thus reducing the risk of trying Slack, particularly for individuals, who are the main market for Slack. These slides describe the value proposition, customers, method of value capture, scope of activities and the method of strategic control for Slack.

This presentation describes a step-by-step process for creating a core diagram that is applicable to companies that exist within the collaboration operating model, as described by Ross and Weill in their book "Enterprise Architecture As Strategy." The method produces a core diagram that preserves business agility by forcing the enterprise architect to consider the costs and benefits of reuse of processes, information, services, and systems. The resulting model supports "Capability at the Core, and Agility at the Edge."

Building a Data Streaming Center of Excellence With Steve Gonzalez and Derek Kane | Current 2022 How do you accelerate success with data streaming at your organization? After developing an interest and recognizing the potential value in using Data Streaming technologies like Apache Kafka, organizations often struggle with implementing best practices at scale, and subsequently struggle in navigating the path to desired returns on investment (ROI). This talk explores a solution to overcome common roadblocks and delays to realizing value at your organization - building a Data Streaming Center of Excellence (CoE). We will discuss the keys to success including workstreams and services required of a CoE, repeatable standards and guidance, supporting a community of practice, and more. You will see examples of use case templates, runbooks and documentation, team structures, and in general garner a better understanding of how you may implement a CoE given your unique culture, priorities, and streaming maturity level. This will be an introductory-level talk that appeals to technical as well as non-technical personnel considering or building a central shared service offering for an organization. It is also ideal for managers or executives wondering how they might drive accelerated, large-scale adoption of data streaming across their enterprise in a governed, repeatable fashion.

Drupal is a powerful platform but most Drupal firms are less than 50 people strong and there are very few in the 50 - 500 range. One of the biggest limitations (and also the biggest strengths) of Drupal is its powerful API which creates a steep learning curve for anybody new in Drupal and consequently an entry barrier for new players to enter also also a limitation for existing players to scale. We are competing in a space where gigantic players in the industry like Accenture, IBM, Infosys, CTS etc manage projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars with teams that are hundreds or even thousands strong. If Drupal companies have to compete with such players then we will also have to re-invent ourselves to be able to offer an alternative to proprietary platforms not just in terms of technology but also in terms of a scale of solutions and engagements. This presentation is about exploring how Drupal companies can compete to collaborate with each other to effectively take on such large players and also allow the whole Drupal ecosystem to grow. This is about how Drupal companies could explore a much wider range of collaboration among Drupal companies who look at Drupal not just as a commercial tool but as a powerful community that can transform application development on the web and who look at Free Software as a philosophy of life and not something to take a free ride on. Such collaborations would not only address the commercial needs of companies but also the contribution needs of the community. About Zyxware Technologies We are a 9 year old exclusive Drupal company with a team of 70 people. We are a featured service provider on Drupal.org and we have been actively contributing to Drupal in terms of code, support and financial support. We have reached a size where we are actively looking to collaborate with other Drupal companies who are passionate about Drupal and the community around it.
