West Bengal Government has decided to fast track its activities to achieve Open Defecation Free status by 2017. In a Seminar organised by the FICCI, the State Government shared its expectations from the corporate partners.

•Baseline Survey 2012-13 identified 1.51
croe households out of which 67.77 lakh
households lack basic sanitation facility
within the premises
•Out of 3349 Gram Panchayats in the
State, 1072 have been declared ‘Nirmal’
leaving 2277 GPs to cover in three years

•Even in declared ‘Nirmal Gram Panchayats’ ,
the baseline survey has identified several
thousands of households lacking appropriate
sanitation facilities
•Although we have covered more than 90% of
the Schools with basic sanitation facilities,
the revised RTE norm of one School Toilet
Block per 80 students increased the task
manifold

•The State Government faces enormous
challenge in addressing the issue of
sanitation facilities at ICDS Centres not in
Government buildings
•Operation & Maintenance of Community
Sanitary Complexes is a major challenge
•SLWM is another area of concern

•Pledge to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF)
status by 2017
•Identified 844 Gram Panchayats for achieving
Nirmal status in 2014-15 and the rest in
following two years
