Editor's Notes
Thank you for coming to the Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine event London IRC workshop. My name is Tim Benzie, I’m the Communications Executive at LTN – I’ll be speaking for a few minutes generally on what the Innovation Relay Centre is, and then I’ll hand over to Anastasia Liapi, who’s going to speak in more detail about a fantastic online facility, which is a great way the IRC can help you find European technology partners .
It’s commonly acknowledged that Europe is good at turning money into research, but not particularly good at turning research into money . It’s why the European Commission made partnership and collaboration a priority under Framework 6. They recognised that small and medium sized enterprises were finding it more difficult to access the latest technologies – and it’s a problem we’re funded to help solve. We can turn research into money by strengthening the links between technologies and small and medium sized enterprises.
What does this mean for you? There are over a thousand IRC professionals in Europe: assisting in technology transfer and partnerships. We send out regular alerts by email, on what’s new, - on who’s seeking which technologies - which go to nearly 7500 subscribers all over Europe. That’s a big market for innovation, and each IRC has direct access to it, finding the right technology to fit the need and to reduce the problem. Because the London IRC is hosted by London Technology Network, we have nine technology analysts and consultants, experts in ICT, life science and process and product industries. They think laterally, they have a wide range of contact throughout Europe and they’re experienced in looking for opportunities that are in line with your company’s strategies. Finally, there is access to an advanced database of potential R&D partners, which Anastasia will speak to shortly.
First, an example of design . Think London is an agency that helps businesses set up offices in London and create high value employment here. They introduced us to a US incomer, Immersion, who wanted to meet Symbian and ARM CTOs. That was an easy introduction given that they come to our academic events. Immersion introduced us to the guy in charge of designing the experience for Vodafone’s 157 million customers. Last Friday we had suppliers flying in from as far as Austria, Finland and Scotland to talk about designing services.
