10. COAL HANDLING PLANT
• The Coal Received from BHARAT COKING COAL LTD. DHANBAD
& SOUTH EASTERN COAL FIELD LTD. BILASPUR(M.P.) by train.
• Everyday 3- 4 trains of coal are unloaded, each train
consists 58 wagons.
•Specification of conveying system:
oBelt width : 1400mm
oSpeed : 2.2m/sec
oTotal install power : 360kw
oCapacity : 1350/750 ton/hr
oNo. of conveyor: 38
11. Boiler
• It is a closed vessel in which water under
pressure is converted into steam.
• Hot water or steam used to transfer heat to a
process.
• A boiler is always designed to absorb
maximum amount of heat released in process
of combustion.
• Furnace:- It is primary part of boiler where the
fuel is burnt to liberate the heat energy.

15. Super heater
• Super heater consists
group of tubes.
• The tubes are heated by
the heat of combustion
gases during their passage
from furnace to chimney,
so the temperature
increased.
• Super heater remove the
moisture from the steam
leaving from the boiler
tubes.
Economizer
• Economizer is a device
which recover the heat
from the flue gases on
their way to chimney.
• It increases the 10-12%
efficiency of the plant.
17. Air Pre-heater
• Function- To raise the
tempreatur of air.
• Benefits- Increase the
efficiency of plant.
• Type- Plate, Tubular,
Regenrative.
• KSTPS uses
Regenerative type.

22. Cooling System
• In KSTPS hydrogen cooling
system is employed for generator
cooling.
• Hydrogen is used because of its
superior cooling properties & low
density.
• Thermal conductivity of H2 7.3
times of air.
• Seal oil system are used in turbine
for less friction in bearing.
• Water cooling also used for any
kind of fire.
23. WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The principle problem in high pressure boiler are
corrosion and steam impurities. These impurities
form deposite over turbine blades and nozzeles.
Corrosion costs power station crores rupees in
repair.

25. Water Treatment Plant
Pressure filter removes
undisclosed impurities from
raw water.
Carbon filter removes excess
chlorine from clarified
water.
D.M. plant removes dissolved
impurities from clarified
water.
Conductivity ,pH & silica
content of this water must be
checked time to time.
27. ASH HANDLING PLANT
This plant can be divided into three sub plants as follows :-
1)Fuel and Ash Plant:It is specially designed for bottom ash and fly ash in
electro static precipitator economizer and air preheaters hoppers.
2)Air and Gas Plant:The flue gases after passing through the ElectroStatic Precipitator is exhausted through chimney.
28. 3) Ash Disposal and & Dust Collection
Plant:Dry free fly ash is
collected in two
number of 31 fly ash
hopper which are
handled by two
independent fly
ash system.
30. Fly ash utilization
1). FLY ASH:
• Fly ash is used for making Cement and Bricks.
2). BOTTOM ASH:
• Used for increase the fertility of soil.
• Construction of Roads

34. Advantages
• The fuel used is quite cheap.
• Less initial cost as compared to other generating
plants.
• It can be installed at any place irrespective of the
existence of coal. The coal can be transported to the
site of the plant by rail or road.
• It require less space as compared to Hydro power
plants.
• Cost of generation is less than that of diesel power
plants.
35. Disadvantages
• It pollutes the atmosphere due to production
of large amount of smoke and fumes.
• It is costlier in running cost as compared to
Hydro electric plants.
• The overall efficiency of thermal power plant
is less then 40 %.
• Disposal of ash is major problem.
