2. motivation In early 2010 there were for the first time more connected devices coming online with AT&T and Verizon than new human subscribers. We are at the cusp of the emergence of a network of objects, an ‘Internet of Things’, that empowers computers to perceive the world for themselves and act independently on our behalf. The Internet of Things has the potential to significantly impact the way we optimise the operation of cities, buildings, infrastructure and business. SENSE --- INTERACT --- PLATFORM
Focusing on a particular application of smart retail, this presentation looks at some of the internet of things projects at Arup.
The internet of things is a key driver of change that is influencing the ways in which we can sense and monitor our built environment. This will potentially have significant impact on the way we understand how the spaces we design are used, it will help us design interactive services and it will provide a platform to manipulate the increasing complexity of modern life. There are three driversof particular interest.Sense – sensors and actuators increasing in ubiquity as cost decreases and their “smartness” increases Interact – from defacto IP protocols to wireless networks – the ability for devices to communicate is more openPlatform – the internet has taught us the benefits which can be gained from creating systems which others can use as a base to build from.
Arup has recently been awarded the lead role in a project to develop a long-term vision to revitalize the Oakland and Northside areas of Pittsburg USA. The aim is to create a smarter urban environment that will encourage social patterns to improve quality of life beyond the typical refurbishment or urban renewal project.
