This is an extended set of the 5 slides used at 100% Open's Pecha Kucha at the Corporate Union event. - 2. motivation In early 2010 there were for the first time more connected devices coming online with AT&T and Verizon than new human subscribers. We are at the cusp of the emergence of a network of objects, an ‘Internet of Things’, that empowers computers to perceive the world for themselves and act independently on our behalf. - Focusing on a particular application of smart retail, this presentation looks at some of the internet of things projects at Arup.
- The internet of things is a key driver of change that is influencing the ways in which we can sense and monitor our built environment. This will potentially have significant impact on the way we understand how the spaces we design are used, it will help us design interactive services and it will provide a platform to manipulate the increasing complexity of modern life. There are three driversof particular interest.Sense – sensors and actuators increasing in ubiquity as cost decreases and their “smartness” increases Interact – from defacto IP protocols to wireless networks – the ability for devices to communicate is more openPlatform – the internet has taught us the benefits which can be gained from creating systems which others can use as a base to build from.
- Arup has recently been awarded the lead role in a project to develop a long-term vision to revitalize the Oakland and Northside areas of Pittsburg USA. The aim is to create a smarter urban environment that will encourage social patterns to improve quality of life beyond the typical refurbishment or urban renewal project.
- Moving to the neighbourhood scale this project out of SF looks at noise mapping of a district
- Increasingly seeing the use of mobile sensor platforms in urban context – see also work such as path intelligence
- I started in this area on a project looking at resource use in buildings. This image shows a foyer installation by Francesco showing an arduino / dmx controlled LED light array pulling live data from the seewatt resource use database.
- CASE UCL / Arup project – researching how IoT will seep into our environment. Hinteractions diagram.
- AI / collective intelligence / recommender systems being applied to understand usage patterns. Lab at OU in MK to do controlled tests of the recommender algorithms.
- Arduino controlled lights connected via wifi back to base station doing the number crunching.
- Install at Arup – over a 100 “sales” of wine during a 2 day experimental process.
