- 21. appliance design KEY FACTS Accessible – can be used anytime, anywhere – wherever people have access to the corporate intranet (home, office, hotel etc.) Dynamic – on the device you can “grab a room”, view who currently has the room booked or see when the next booking is due. Simple - requires no staff training Situated - provides room identification and meeting information where it is needed, outside the meeting room. Mediates – gives high visibility to critical ever changing information about meetings, schedules and projects. Economical - no central day to day management required and is extendable, units can be added or removed as required. Federated – this appliance is “aware” of other RoomWizards, is OS and hardware platform independent, can be used via the corporate intranet. Statistics - automatically creates statistics on room usage – even when people don’t pre book but “grab it” because it is free.

- which workplace are you talking about - this very much addresses the office and studio environment of knowledge-based workers. It doesn't cover workers in retail spaces (particularly), factories, universities, farms, call centres etc., all of whom are perhaps greater in number.

- open platform - the notion of the ‘platform’ has BECOME THE UBIQUITOUS ORGANISING CONCEPT, business model and overriding cultural metaphor for our times, from Amazon’s platform for retail to Apple’s for music, from the Obama campaign’s platform for engagement to the numerous so-called ‘web 2.0’ applications which offer platforms for almost anything, from photos and video to broad social and cultural engagement in all its guises. - platforms – for mgt yes, designers yes, but also the workers may find unexpected interventions and appropriations they can make
- also at the personal level - to an increasing extent, people are now using digital media to ‘instrument’ their life; to monitor their body mass index or their fitness regime via Nike+; to track their personal music listening such that recommendations can be made; assess their real-time energy usage via smart meters, and generally share their precise location, activities and thoughts via social media. This is over and above the increasing practice of institutional ‘monitoring’ of the way, say, cities are performing in real-time.
