Relief printing involves printing from the raised areas of a carved block, usually wood or linoleum. Linoleum became a popular medium in the 1920s thanks to artists like Picasso and Matisse. A linoleum print is made by carving into a linoleum block. Artists use gouges and stop cuts to carve away non-image areas and control lines. A two-plate linoleum print allows for more tonal range and emphasis through use of two carved blocks printed together.
