18. Leviticus 5:1, Adjure
• Leviticus 5:1 'Now if a person sins after he hears a
public adjuration to testify when he is a witness,
whether he has seen or otherwise known, if he does
not tell it, then he will bear his guilt.
• Matthew 26:63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high
priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that
You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.“
• “Adjure”
1.to charge, bind, or command earnestly and solemnly,
often under oath or the threat of a penalty.
• 2.to entreat or request earnestly or solemnly.
19. Leviticus 5:5, Confess
• Leviticus 5:5 'So it shall be when he becomes
guilty in one of these, that he shall confess
that in which he has sinned.
• The 1st use in the entire Bible of the word
“confess” is here in Leviticus 5:5.
• Maurice Horn says, “Some people confess a
sin a thousand times, I tell them to confess it
once, then thank God a thousand times for
forgiving them.”
20. Confess
• Lisa Harper said, “Our gracious heavenly Father
entrusts us to confess our mess. And to show us
that it’s okay to let down our pretenses, His Word
is full of stories about unlikely people becoming
heroes- a stuttering ex-con who leads God’s
people out of slavery; an unethical little “IRS
agent” who becomes a friend of Jesus; a sleazy
woman whose testimony triggers a revival in her
hometown. If you’re embarrassed by your past,
you’re in good company!”
21. Leviticus 5:7, Can’t Afford A Lamb?
• Leviticus 5:7 'But if he cannot afford a lamb,
then he shall bring to the LORD his guilt
offering for that in which he has sinned, two
turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a
sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.
• 8/10 uses of “turtledoves” are here in
Leviticus, only one NT use….
22. Leviticus 5:7, Can’t Afford A Lamb?
• Leviticus 5:7 'But if he cannot afford a lamb…two
turtledoves or two young pigeons..
• Luke 2:22 And when the days for their purification
according to the law of Moses were completed, they
brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the
Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "EVERY
firstborn MALE THAT OPENS THE WOMB SHALL BE
CALLED HOLY TO THE LORD "), 24 and to offer a sacrifice
according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, "A
PAIR OF TURTLEDOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS."
• Which is it, the Law of the Lord, or the law of Moses?
23. Leviticus 5:11, Can’t Afford 2 Doves?
• Leviticus 5:7…cannot afford a lamb…bring …two
turtledoves or two young pigeons…
• Leviticus 5:11 'But if his means are insufficient
for two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then
for his offering for that which he has sinned, he
shall bring the tenth of an ephah of fine flour for
a sin offering; he shall not put oil on it or place
incense on it, for it is a sin offering.
• Not a lamb (vs.7), not fine flour (vs.11)= blue
collar?
24. Let’s read Leviticus 5:14-6:7
• Lev 5:1 Testifying, Uncleanness, Breaking Vows
• Lev 5:14 The Guilt Offering, Restitution
• Lev 6:8 The Burnt Offering
• Lev 6:14 The Grain Offering
• Lev 6:24 The Sin Offering
• Lev 7:1 The Guilt Offering
• Lev 7:11 The Fellowship Offering
• Lev 7:22 Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden
• Lev 7:28 The Priests' Share
26. Lev 5:14 The LORD Spoke To Moses
• Exodus 2:1 Now a man from the house of Levi
went and married a daughter of Levi.
• Not 1 use of “Levi,” “Levitical,” or “Levite” and
only 2 verses use “Levites” in Leviticus.
• Strange that a book called “Leviticus,”
meaning “concerning the Levites,” wouldn’t
use those words more.
27. Lev 5:14, Guilt Offering
• Leviticus 5:15 "If a person acts unfaithfully
and sins unintentionally against the LORD'S
holy things, then he shall bring his guilt [0817
asham , offense, guilt] offering [no Heb for “offense” it’s supplied]
to the LORD…for a guilt offering.
• 04604 ma`al {mah'-al}
• Meaning: 1) unfaithful or treacherous act,
trespass 1a) against man 1b) against God…
• Usage: AV - trespass 17, transgression 6,
trespassed 2, falsehood 1, grievously 1
28. Lev 5:14, Guilt Offering
• NAS NAU ...acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally... a guilt
offering.
• NKJ KJV ... commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance
[unintentionally NKJ] ... a trespass offering:
• CSB ...offends by sinning unintentionally... a restitution
offering.
• ESV ... a breach of faith and sins unintentionally... a guilt
offering.
• NET ... a trespass and sins by straying unintentionally... a
guilt offering.
• YLT ...committeth a trespass, and hath sinned through
ignorance... a guilt-offering.
• NIV ... is unfaithful to the LORD [commits a violation NIV84 ] by
sinning unintentionally...a guilt offering.
29. Lev 5:14, Guilt Offering
• All acts of unfaithfulness, trespass, breach of faith,
violations, even unintentional ones, still require a guilt
offering. That’s the bad news!
• The good news is…
• Isaiah 53:10 But the LORD was pleased To crush Him,
putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a
guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong
His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will
prosper in His hand.
• Isaiah 53:6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each
of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has
caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
• Hebrews 9:26 …He has been manifested to put away
sin by the sacrifice of Himself. [John 1:29, Gal 3:13, Eph 5:2]
30. Leviticus 5:16, Add A Fifth
• Leviticus 5:16 "He shall make restitution for that
which he has sinned against the holy thing, and
shall add to it a fifth part of it …
• Sometimes called “double tithe”
• Bible teaches restitution and punishment, not
reformation/penitence. We got it wrong.
• Luke 19:8 Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord,
"Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to
the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of
anything, I will give back four times as much.“
• Exodus 22:1, 2 Samuel 12:6, Numbers 5:7
31.
32. “a good thought” In Closing
• Leo Tolstoy said, “We regret losing a purse full of
money, but a good thought which has come to us,
which we’ve heard or read, a thought which we should
have remembered and applied to our life, which could
have improved the world- we lose this thought and
promptly forget about it, and we do not regret it,
though it is more precious than millions.”
• If this is true of “a good thought”, how much more so
concerning missed evangelism opportunities?
• We should regret folks losing heaven and Jesus!
