2. • Luke 19:2-4…
Zacchaeus…wanted
to see who Jesus
was, but being a
short man he could
not, because of the
crowd. 4 So he ran
ahead and climbed a
sycamore-fig tree to
see him, since Jesus
was coming that
way.
3. Luke 19:2, Chief Tax Collector
• NAU Luke 19:2 And there was a man called by
the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax
collector and he was rich.
• The word chief indicates that he would have
had other tax collectors under him.
Undoubtedly he would've been very wealthy.
5. Luke 19:2, Fourfold Restitution
• When theft is involved, Scripture commands a 4 times
repayment. Zaccheus mentions that same 4 times repayment
to bring restitution.
• NAU Exodus 22:1 "If a man steals an ox or a sheep and
slaughters it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for the ox and
four sheep for the sheep.
• Zaccheus had apparently been over taxing people and the Law
required restitution.
• NAU Leviticus 6:5 or anything about which he swore falsely; he
shall make restitution for it in full and add to it one-fifth more…
• Zaccheus went well beyond what was required.
• Exodus 22 is about punishment, for crimes under the Mosaic
Law. Zaccheus was under the Mosaic Law. Exodus 22:7 …if the
thief is caught, he shall pay double.
6. Everybody Should Get Rich And Famous
• NAU Luke 19:2 And there was a man called by the name of
Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.
• Jim Carrey said, “I think everybody should get rich and famous
and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that
it's not the answer.”
• The Bible indicates many of God's servants were very wealthy.
Vows of poverty are not biblical.
• Genesis 26:12-14…Isaac…continued to grow richer until he
became very wealthy…
• Psalm 49:16-19 Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich…
7. Vows Of Poverty Are Not Biblical
• Proverbs 22:2 The rich and the poor have a common bond, The LORD is the
maker of them all.
• Matthew 19:23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for
a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
• NAU 1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when
accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world,
so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 And if we have food and
covering, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who want to get rich fall
into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which
plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all
sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith,
and pierced themselves with many a pang.
• 1 Timothy 6:18 …be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
8. Wealth Can Be A Temptation
And A Snare
1 Timothy 6:6-11 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when
accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into
the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have
food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who
want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish
and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by
longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced
themselves with many griefs. 11 But flee from these things, you man
of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,
perseverance and gentleness.

• Don Young tells, “When our eldest daughter was old enough to
understand what saving money was all about, my wife and I sat down
with her and explained the value of money. We explained how you
save, and when the piggybank was full, you take the money out and
deposit it in a commercial bank so that it might draw interest. We
thought we had done a thorough job. She seemed to understand and
couldn't wait to open a savings account in our local bank by herself. I
called the banker in our little town and told him our daughter was on
the way to open her savings account. We would stop in later and sign
the necessary papers.
What a thrill! She got the president of the bank himself to wait on
her. She handed over her savings, and he gave her a receipt and
thanked her for her business. But she wouldn't leave. She just stood
there like she was waiting on something else. "Is there anything else

The final week of Jesus' life begins on Palm Sunday with a royal
procession from the top of the Mount of Olives into the city of
Jerusalem. The crowds waving palm fronds shout "Hosanna" and
spread their cloaks on the road. But why is the messianic king they
are welcoming riding on a humble donkey? In this video we will try
to answer this question by examining the Scriptures in the original

38. Luke 19:14,
If The Jews Accepted Their Messiah
• “…Jesus was offering Himself to the Jews as the King of the Jews, as the deciding question as to whether a Jew will enter
the coming kingdom. If the Jews had largely accepted Him as their Messiah and King, there would still have been the
crucifixion, burial, and the resurrection, the ascension, and the seven year Tribulation, ending with Christ’s second coming,
in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies.
•
• Brace yourself for this next statement:
•
• But if the Jews had largely accepted Christ as their Messiah and King, there would not have been the body of believers
known as ‘the Church’, nor the books from Acts to Revelation as we have them, nor the Rapture of the Church, nor the
gospel of grace. Even the gospels would each have been written differently. These were all added because the Jews
largely rejected Christ as their King and Messiah.

• Romans 11:11-12 (NASU; see also Ephesians 3:1-10)
• I say then, they [Israel] did not stumble so as to fall [permanently], did they? May it never be! But by their transgression
salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their
failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be!
•
• The gospel of the kingdom, preached by Christ during His first coming, will be preached again during the coming Tribulation
period, not only to the Jews, but also to the Gentiles (aka ‘nations’; Greek: ethnos), and then Christ will return to establish His
kingdom:…”

• Fourfold Restitution?
• Thursday, May 15th, 2014Christian Life
• Q. I noticed something repeated in Scripture. When theft is involved, David mentions a 4 times repayment when being
confronted by Nathan, and Zaccheus mentions that same 4 times repayment to bring restitution for the things he has stolen.
Paul then says (post-Cross) let the thief stop stealing basically and work with his hands- no mention of singular, let alone
quadruple repayment for restitution. So twofold question: what if any is/was the significance of a 4 times repayment (is the
number arbitrary?) and is it presently incumbent upon repentant thieves to repay or to just cease and work with their hands?
• A. In 2 Sam.12, Nathan was using a hypothetical situation to lead David into the realization the he had done something much
worse than steal a sheep. David’s response that a man who steals and slaughters another man’s sheep must repay him with 4
sheep is from Exodus 22:1 where the penalty for such a crime was established.
• In a case like that of Zaccheus where he had apparently been overcharging people on their tax bills the Law required
restitution of the overcharge plus a 20% penalty (Lev. 6:2-5). Zaccheus went well beyond what was required.
• In Epesians 4:28 Paul was simply saying that Christians should not steal to meet their needs, but should find useful work so
they could not only support themselves but also contribute to the needs of others.
• While many teach the need for restitution in cases of theft by a Christian, the New Testament doesn’t include any clear
guidelines for doing so. This is likely due to the fact that the emphasis in the New Testament is on forgiveness by the victim
instead.

41. Luke 19:37, Palm Sunday – Jesus Last Journey,
By Jonathan Lipnick , Holy Land Studies
• Having raised Lazarus, Jesus makes his way down the Mount of Olives
entering Jerusalem on Sunday. We are told that the crowds wave palm
branches and shout “Hosanna!” (Mark 11:9). This is rather odd because it is
happening a week before Passover. In the Jewish tradition the waving of
palm branches and the singing of Hosanna takes place during the autumn
Festival of Booths (Sukkot), not the spring Festival of Passover. The
explanation for this apparent confusion might be found in the original
meaning of the words found in the Gospels. Hosanna comes from the
Hebrew “hoshia-na” meaning “save us, please” found in Psalm 118:25. The
original name of Jesus in Hebrew, Yeshua, is built on the same root: to save.
So the crowds have spontaneously devised a new ritual, welcoming the
messianic savior to Jerusalem using a well-known phrase out of season. The
waving of palm branches in April would have struck bystanders as very odd
until they realized that Hosanna matches the name of Jesus perfectly. It
would then be clear that indeed this is “the one who comes in the name of
the Lord” (Ps 118:26).

me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away."
• 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
• 5 "Say to the Daughter of Zion,
• 'See, your king comes to you,
• gentle and riding on a donkey,
• on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"
• 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on
them, and Jesus sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees
and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
• "Hosanna to the Son of David!"
• "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"

• 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?"

46. "What is Palm Sunday?”
GotQuestions.org
• Question: "What is Palm Sunday?” http://www.gotquestions.org/Printer/qotw-PF.html
•
• Answer: Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, exactly one week before His
resurrection (Matthew 21:1–11). As Jesus entered the holy city, He neared the culmination of a long journey toward
Golgotha. He had come to save the lost (Luke 19:10), and now was the time—this was the place—to secure that salvation.
Palm Sunday marked the start of what is often called “Passion Week,” the final seven days of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Palm
Sunday was the “beginning of the end” of Jesus’ work on earth.
• Palm Sunday began with Jesus and His disciples traveling over the Mount of Olives. The Lord sent two disciples ahead into
the village of Bethphage to find an animal to ride. They found the unbroken colt of a donkey, just as Jesus had said they
would (Luke 19:29–30). When they untied the colt, the owners began to question them. The disciples responded with the
answer Jesus had provided: “The Lord needs it” (Luke 19:31–34). Amazingly, the owners were satisfied with that answer
and let the disciples go. “They brought [the donkey] to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it” (Luke
19:35).
• As Jesus ascended toward Jerusalem, a large multitude gathered around Him. This crowd understood that Jesus was the
Messiah; what they did not understand was that it wasn’t time to set up the kingdom yet—although Jesus had tried to tell
them so (Luke 19:11–12). The crowd’s actions along the road give rise to the name “Palm Sunday”: “A very large crowd
spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road” (Matthew 21:8).
In strewing their cloaks on the road, the people were giving Jesus the royal treatment—King Jehu was given similar honor
at his coronation (2 Kings 9:13). John records the detail that the branches they cut were from palm trees (John 12:13).
• On that first Palm Sunday, the people also honored Jesus verbally: “The crowds that went ahead of him and those that
followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ / ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ / ‘Hosanna in the
highest heaven!’” (Matthew 21:9). In their praise of Jesus, the Jewish crowds were quoting Psalm 118:25–26, an

• Q. In John 12:1 it says:”Then six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany…”, and then verse
12 says, “The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast…” So, according to John 12:1,
Jesus was in Bethany 6 days before the 14th of the month, that is He was there on the 8th of the
month, and the next day is the 9th of the month, the day when the multitude went out to meet Him
and cried out “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!”, and it
was not on the 10th of the month.
• A. We know Jesus entered Jerusalem on Psalm Sunday. John 12:1 says Jesus had come to Bethany
six days before Passover, but it doesn’t say He had a big dinner that same night and left the next
morning. Since Palm Sunday was the 10th, the ninth would have been a Saturday, which was the
Sabbath, and the 8th, the day Jesus arrived, was a Friday. From sunset Friday to sunset Saturday no
work was allowed, and that included travel. Therefore, since the dinner was given on the night
before Palm Sunday, it had to have taken place on Saturday after sunset when the Sabbath ended.
