3. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• So what is the point of this similitude? What
could Jesus be showing?
• But first, what is a “similitude”?
4. Similitude?
• Some count over 200 kinds of linguistic devices in the
Bible;
• si·mil·i·tude…
• noun1.likeness; resemblance: a similitude of habits.
• 2.a person or thing that is like or the match or counterp
art of another: This expression is a similitude of
the other.
• 3.semblance; image: a similitude of the truth.
• 4.a likening or comparison in the form of a simile, para
ble, or allegory: He spoke by similitudes.
5. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• So what is the point of this similitude? What
could Jesus be showing?
• There’s lot’s of possibilities;
6. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• By telling this story of the laborers in the
vineyard, Christ could be showing that God is;
• In debt to no man
• Is the sovereign Potter
• Will be fair and just to all
• But is under no obligation to give grace to all
• God will keep His promises to Israel, and yet
• Matthew 11:11…Yet the one who is least in the
kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
7. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• This parable does illustrate the equity of how God
deals. This teaching begins in Matthew 19:27 Then
Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and
followed You; what then will there be for us?"
• Jesus answered him in Matthew 19:30 "But many who
are first will be last; and the last, first.
• Matthew 20:4 …whatever is right I will give you…
• Matthew 20:13… I am doing you no wrong…
• Matthew 20:15 'Is it not lawful for me to do what I
wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious
because I am generous?'
8. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• This parable also illustrates the sovereignty of God in His
seeking, electing, calling, sending, and rewarding workers
for the jobs that He sent them to do.
• Matthew 20:1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a
landowner who went out early in the morning to hire
laborers for his vineyard.
• Matthew 20:2 "When he had agreed with the laborers for
a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard.
• Matthew 20:4 and to those he said, 'You also go into the
vineyard…
• Matthew 20:5 "Again he went out about the sixth and the
ninth hour, and did the same thing
9. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• The Bible Knowledge Commentary says, “By this
illustration, Jesus was teaching that the matter of
rewards is under the sovereign control of God, the
“Landowner" in the parable. God is the One before
whom all accounts will be settled. Many who have
prominent places will someday find themselves
demoted. And many who often find themselves at the
end of the line will find themselves promoted to the
head of the line: The last will be first, and the first will
be last. (This supports what Jesus had said in 19:28–
30.) In the final accounting, the Lord’s analysis will
carry the greatest and only important wait."
10. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• So what is the point of this similitude? What could
Jesus be showing?
• Don’t overlook;
• Matthew 19:30 "But many who are first will be last;
and the last, first.
• Matthew 20:8 …pay them their wages, beginning with
the last group to the first.‘
• Matthew 20:10 "When those hired first came…
• Matthew 20:16 "So the last shall be first, and the first
last.“
• And let’s check the context;
11. The Parable Of The Laborers Context
• I believe that the context for the for "the last shall be first, and the
first last. (Matthew 20:16) " begins back in Matthew 19:16 where
the rich young ruler says "what good thing shall I do that I may gain
have eternal life?" He answers Jesus, that he has kept the law then
Jesus says give up all that you have and come follow me (v.21).
Jesus is reinforcing this huge dispensational change that he
introduced in Matthew 11:11. When he told his disciples (v.23) that
it's "hard for a rich man to enter heaven", this was difficult for the
disciples because they equated good with prosperity. So they
responded with "who then can be saved?" (vs.27). In other words, if
the good people that God has blessed so much won't enter the
kingdom, who can possibly make it into heaven? Peter adds "we
have left all and followed you." Jesus replies with Matthew 19:28–
30. This sets the stage for the parable of the landowner. The whole
parable is about the fact that Israel who had started from the first
hour and born the heat of the day,
12. The Parable Of The Laborers Context
• for 1400 years, with the law and the prophets, the sacrifices that
they have made, will be rewarded, exactly as promised, but the
church age believers, who were hired at the very last hour, will rule
over as the 12 tribes of Israel. This is a reinforcement, and
expansion of, Matthew 11:11, and Luke 16:16. There we find out
that even the faithful Old Testament saints like Joseph, Daniel,
Zechariah, and Isaiah, all of the Old Testament saints will be less
than the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven (church age
saints). In fact, they will be judged by the disciples of Christ (v.28).
• So, Jesus then gives The Parable Of The Laborers (Matthew 20:1-
16), giving assurance to the disciples that God will give Israel exactly
what He has promised, He is just and will do right, but He is under
no obligation to extend the grace of the kingdom of heaven to
them. They will get exactly what they bargained for, an earthly land
blessing and the Millennial Kingdom.
13. Matthew 20:1-16, The Parable Of The Laborers
• The greatest example of “the last shall be first”
must be the thief on the cross
• Luke 23:42 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember
me when You come in Your kingdom!" 43 And He
said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be
with Me in Paradise.“
• No law
keeping, fasting, circumcision, sacrifices, only
grace, just ask God
• Bingo! You’re in
14. Matthew 20:15, Your Eye Envious?
• Matthew 20:15 …Or is your eye envious because I am
generous?‘
• <4190> πονηρόσ poneros … Usage: bad(5), crimes(1),
envious(1), envy*(1), evil(50), evil one(5), evil
things(1), malignant(1), more evil(1), more wicked(1),
vicious(1), wicked(6), wicked man(1), wicked
things(1), worthless(1).
• Matthew 6:23 "But if your eye is bad, your whole body
will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is
darkness, how great is the darkness!
• “Evil eye” meant “coveted what belonged to another”
15. Matthew 20:17, Up To Jerusalem
• Matthew 20:17 As Jesus was about to go up to
Jerusalem…
• He’s on His way to the cross now
16. Matthew 20:17, Jesus Foretells His
Passion Again
• Matthew 20:17 As Jesus was about to go up to
Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by
themselves, and on the way He said to them, 18
"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of
Man will be delivered to the chief priests and
scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and
will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge
and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised
up.“
• I think they got it, last time (they grieved)…
• this time? No mention of reaction
• This is at least three times already that Jesus has
announced that he was going to die (12:40; 16:21;
17:22 – 23).
18. Matthew 19:28, Regeneration
• I think Jesus’ comment in Matthew 19:28; “…in
the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on
His glorious throne…” and now “crucify” triggered
this concern over their position;
• <3824> παλιγγενεςία paliggenesia
• Meaning: regeneration, renewal…
• NAU KJV NAS YLT NKJ ... regeneration...
• CSB ... Messianic Age...
• ESV ...new world,...
• NET ... renewed...
19. Jesus’ Instruction Concerning Over Ambition
• Matthew 20:20-22, Over Ambition
• Jesus didn’t really rebuke them for this. Could it
be that it’s alright to be very zealous for the
Millennial Kingdom?
• Instead of rebuke, He challenges their
understanding
• Of course, being men, they think they’ve got it all
figured out.
• Amen! girls
20. Matthew 20:20, With Her Sons
• Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of
Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing
down and making a request of Him.
• Don’t ever let anyone box you in by saying
“Christianity is patriarchal”
• Matthew 20:21 And He said to her, "What do you
wish?" She said to Him, "Command that in Your
kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on
Your right and one on Your left.“
• Remember Matthew 20:20-21 for “patriarchal”
21. Matthew 20:21,
Zeal For The Millennial Kingdom
• Matthew 20:21 …Command that in Your kingdom these two
sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your
left.“
• Do you think they are talking about an allegorical or literal
Kingdom?
• Do you think they were expecting allegorical or literal seats
on the throne?
• Acts 1:3 …over a period of forty days and speaking of the
things concerning the kingdom of God…. 6…they were
asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring
the kingdom to Israel?"
• 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs
which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
22. Matthew 20:22, Drink The Cup?
• NAU Matthew 20:22 But Jesus answered, "You
do not know what you are asking. Are you
able to drink the cup that I am about to
drink?" They said to Him, "We are able.“
• NIV NET NAS ESV CSB NAU ...drink the cup ...
• YLT NKJ KJV ...drink of the cup ...and to be

23. Matthew 20:22, Or Be Baptized?
• Matthew 20:22 But Jesus answered, "You do not know
what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that
I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able.“
• Mark 10:38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know
what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that
I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which
I am baptized?" 39 They said to Him, "We are able."
And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall
drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with
which I am baptized.
24. Matthew 20:23, A Real Kingdom
• Matthew 20:23 He said to them, "My cup you
shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My
left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those
for whom it has been prepared by My Father.“
• What Jesus did not say was “Oh you foolish
disciples, you still think that there's going to
be a real kingdom, how could you be so
foolish, don't you understand that the
kingdom is in your heart, not your seat."
25. Matthew 20:23, You Shall Drink
• Matthew 20:23 He said to them, "My cup you
shall drink…
• Jesus was talking about his suffering and death.
He was saying, you shall indeed share the cup of
suffering and death with me. James suffered
death early on in the church age at the hands of
Herod Agrippa 1 (Acts 12:1–2), and John died a
terrible martyr’s death at the very end of the first
century after exile on Patmos.

"Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!“

The pink and lovely..."Hiller Lake" (Western
Australia). Its startling colour remains a
mystery and while scientists have proven it's
not due to the presence of algae, unlike the
other salt lakes down under, they still can't
explain why it's pink.
