and writing Unit10 1 Read the biography and match the pictures to the year and the events. a b d e c 1879 Nancy Langhorne is born in Danville, Virginia, USA on 19th May. Her father is a wealthy businessman who has made a fortune in railway development. Nancy grows up in Richmond, Virginia, to be a beautiful and intelligent woman. 1894 She marries R.G. Shaw who is very rich but not her equal. She later said: ‘I married beneath myself. All women do.’ 1904 She takes a boat to England after she gets divorced from her first husband. 1919 She wins an election to British Parliament and becomes the first woman in the United Kingdom to be part of the Government. 1920-1944 During this period, she concentrates on issues affecting women and children. She campaigns for women’s rights, especially the right to vote at the age of twenty-one and for equal rights in the Civil Service. She once said, ‘We are not asking for superiority for we have always had that; all we ask is equality.’ a At the start of the war, she becomes critical of the British Prime Minister and votes against the government, helping Winston Churchill to become the British leader.
