1. Subjunctive With Verbs of Emotion The subjunctive is made of a main clause and a subordinate clause. The main clause may contain a verb of emotion such as hope, joy, surprise, fear,and pity. The subordinate clause contains the subjunctive. When there is no change in the subject, use an infinitive. When there is a change in the subject, use the subjunctive.
