2. Welcome from your chairman
I DON’T THINK that there is much doubt that U3A has taken over from the virtually-defunct Adult
Education sector in the local colleges and LEAs as the leading provider of education (in its widest
sense) for adults.
It’s true that the colleges still run courses, but they seem to be increasingly ‘functional’, geared to
subjects that will help the students with a career. Moreover, most are decorated by a range of
qualifications – not something most retired people want any more to do with. In addition, there is a
cost, an ever-increasing cost, to each course as Government funding for education is cut.
In the nooks and crannies of the colleges and in the WEA classes, there are still islands of the wider
education that people want. We want further education, we want to keep our minds and bodies
active, we want more to do as our lives lengthen. We are the first generation (and, perhaps, the last)
to have the time and, usually, sufficient money to allow us to develop new interests and diversions,
to create ‘pastimes’ that do not merely pass the time, but enhance it.
We need this wider education, need it to help prevent that ever-so-easy slide into doleful old age. I
must admit that, at times, I get annoyed with the emphasis placed on ‘activity’ in old age – the
bungee-jumping great-grandmother and the desert-trekking eighty-year-old. All well and fine for
them, but I do like the warmth of my house and I do have too many unread books piled up on the
table to envy them their excitement.
The point is, though, we all need the spur of achieving something to give us fulfilment in our lives,
whether the achievement is physical, intellectual or social. And this is where U3A succeeds. Our
needs are met in one organisation, not many; they are met with one cost (the subscription), not
many; there are no exams, merely pride in achieving something better each time we practice; there
is a social dimension to every group. The best U3As will satisfy the needs of their members,
spurring them on.
There is a risk – complacency, the feeling that we have achieved what we want. Not only a personal
complacency that will prevent us from seeking new interests, but a group complacency that will
prevent a U3A from changing and developing itself.
I have idly looked at the websites of some of the East Midlands U3As today, and have admired the
breadth of their ‘education’ – the groups that cover all possible (and some impossible) subjects. It
would do us all good to look at those sites in order to disabuse ourselves of the idea that we have
‘got it cracked’. We haven’t, and although we have done many good things, there are still many
others to do.

3. Coffee Morning
JUST another reminder about this annual event:
• Most important of all is the change of date from last year – 10th MAY.
• It is upstairs at the Towers from 10am - 12noon and the tickets are £2, which includes a
cup of coffee. (Lift available.)
• This is our main fund-raising event of the year and we all have a good time.
• Whilst having a cuppa and chat with friends, you can also visit the many stalls, which will
include tombola, raffle, a fun game, cake and plant stalls.
• DONATIONS for the tombola and raffle are needed and can be given to any Social
Committee member. On the day, bring any plants and cakes that can also be sold.
REMEMBER: ALL the proceeds go into funds and help keep our low subscriptions. Tickets will be
on sale at the April meeting or pay on the door.

MEMBERS who have looked at the home page of the national website will know that they are
advertising a programme about U3A called 'Life in the Third Age', to be broadcast on the
Community Channel on 13th April at 8.30pm and 18th April at 11pm. (Sky 539, Virgin Media 233,
Freeview 87 and BBC iPlayer.)

Another reminder about the meeting on the 4th May at the Junction restaurant in Sutton in Ashfield
when questions can be asked and hopefully answered. I shall be able to tell you the time of

Socialising keeps you young
LONELINESS can increase the risk of dementia but those who live alone are not more at risk if they
have an active social life, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery
and Psychiatry that suggests that loneliness may affect cognition and memory as a result of loss of
regular use, or that loneliness could itself be a sign of emerging dementia – perhaps as a
behavioural reaction to impaired cognition.

4. Dutch researchers tracked the long-term health of more than 2,000 elderly people with no signs of
dementia who were living independently for three years. Around one in 10 had developed dementia
after three years compared with one in 20 who lived with others. When it came to those who said
they felt lonely, more than twice as many had developed dementia after three years compared with
those who did not.
The authors of the report said: "The fact that 'feeling lonely rather than 'being alone' was associated
with dementia onset suggests that it is not the objective situation, but, rather, the perceived absence
of social attachments that increases the risk of cognitative decline".
So U3A membership may be doing you good as well as providing opportunities for fun and
continued learning!

Recent Events
Backstage at the Palace
MEMBERS enjoyed a backstage visit to the Palace Theatre on 20th March, organised by Sheila
Whalley.
We were shown behind the scenes by Education manager Chris Neale and our tour included
rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and a look behind the wings backstage. We were also able to
watch the technical staff, lighting and sound engineers, preparing the theatre for a performance that
evening.
Later, over coffee, Chris gave us a history of the theatre and one member found a photograph of his
grandmother who once worked there. Chris also gave an update on some future productions,
including two he will be directing.

THIS TABLE SHOWS THE DAY of the month, time and frequency using the first two letters of the
day, followed by numbers 1 - 5 to represent the week number. The final letter M (or F, W or V)
indicates that the group meets monthly, fortnightly, weekly or at variable intervals.

Popular Music Appreciation
WE HAD our musical lunch at the Carnarvon Arms on Tuesday March 26th. It was enjoyed
very much by everyone. Good food, very good company.
The musical quiz was won by Brenda Cartledge and Sandra Evans.

Bowls
OUTDOOR Bowls commence Thursday May 9th, 1.30pm to 3.30pm, and every Thursday until
closing of the Green, at the Mansfield Bowling Club, Chesterfield Road, Mansfield.
I suggest members arrive 1.00pm to 1.15pm to register, collect bowls (if required) and meet
the coaches.

Art
OUR NEW Art group, tutored by member Michael Morton, a retired, professional illustrator who
presented some of his art work to the members' meeting in January, met for the first time on
Wednesday 20th of March at the Big Barn Lane, Methodist Church Hall.
There were 16 attendees, so space for several more. If you haven't already signed up,
please join us and have fun with sketch pads and pencils. Can you draw a pen-and-ink
brassica or insect?
That's our homework for next month, when you'll need a kitchen or workshop tool to draw too.

Digital World
ARCTIC weather in Skegby forced a late change of venue for our 22nd March meeting to The
Rushley, where we welcomed several new members, including some from Hucknall U3A, and
discussed topics some members wanted to explore in the next few months, in addition to
helping everyone to take better snaps on holiday. Specifically:
1. Several new members offered to help us to learn more about enhancements with
our recently-acquired Photoshop Elements 11 than we've been able to so far.
2. Several shoot in RAW in order to have greater editing flexibility than is possible
working with JPGs and offered to explain why this format has advantages in difficult
lighting conditions and when the need for heavy cropping can be foreseen.
3. There was enthusiasm too for restoration of our monthly 'themes', which hadn't
attracted many entries recently, and for the idea of some photographic 'treasure
hunts' during the summer. We agreed that 'Sharp' would be the theme for entries
we'd discuss on 12th April. (The next theme will be 'The Sun', to be submitted as
email attachments to me by 5th May please, for discussion on the 10th.)
4. We will hold our first treasure hunt at Vicar Water Country Park at 2pm on 24th May
and will welcome anyone who'd like to find and photograph 12 subjects and submit
their efforts by email to me by 2nd June so that we can discuss them on the 14th.
Do come along to Stanton Hill Baptist Church at 2.00 on any 2nd or 4th Friday if you'd like to join
in and share tips about making the most of your camera, however simple or complex it is, or learn
how simple photo editing anyone can do can turn snaps into something to be proud of.

10. Theatre Visits
THE LONDON MUSICAL – BILLY ELLIOTT, 11TH & 12TH JUNE
Margaret Burlinson has taken over the organisation of this break to help me out and asks me to
remind the 38 going on this break that the company would be grateful to receive your balances by
17th April. Please remember to bring your cheque books as she will need to post them after the
April meeting on the 16th. Cheques to be paid to Mansfield & District U3A.
She has added £1 for the driver's gratuity, so the complicated balances are as follows:
• 6 singles inc. supplement = £155.
• 4 singles inc. supplement minus musical = £125.50.
• 1 couple minus musical = £90.50.
• The rest - 26 people = £120. (You should know who you are, but ring Margaret if you are
confused.)
Those 30 people who will be eating at Porters in Covent garden can add the £5 deposit to your
cheque. Margaret has already paid this deposit because we could not risk tables being taken.
We have to pre-order so I shall show you a menu in May from which you can choose your 2
courses. You can then also collect from me: your itinerary, coach plan & your luggage labels, which
Margaret will have prepared by then.

YOGA
OUR NEW yoga group got off to a deferred start on 27th
of March with a good crowd of enthusiastic members who
now meet every week to learn from Sarah Hollis, who
has been qualified and teaching yoga for over 6
years.
She is very understanding and can modify her lesson
time to suit those who may be more comfortable on
chairs.
It is not too late to join, so contact me, if you missed
the list at the last meeting, although we are limited to
a maximum of 20 for safety reasons. The cost is
£4.00 to cover rent and Sarah's fee.

Luncheon Club
MARCH at Ania in Sherwood, Nottingham, introduced members to Polish cuisine and we now
understand why it's had rave reviews. Well done and thanks to Maisie Hammond for finding it and
for making arrangements, and to Ania and her son for opening specially and making us so
welcome. Several diners told me how pleasantly surprised they were to find that Polish cuisine is
actually lightly spiced and more-delicate than they'd anticipated.
On April 18th, we'll try another new venue, the extensively refurbished Mansfield Manor, to see
what changes the new owners have brought to the Portland-Hotel-that-was of infamy. Recent
reviews have been excellent and Reg and Barbara Dixon are confident that this will be another
worthy addition to Mansfield's dining scene. The menu they've chosen certainly looks excellent and
has something to suit everyone, priced at just £10 for two courses or £13 for three.

11. And for our third exploration in a row, Sheila Whalley will be taking us to The Countryman at Kirkby
in Ashfield, which has also had major refurbishment to bring a more modern feel to this traditional,
family-owned country pub, which is establishing a fine reputation for food, service and ambience.
Dishes will be priced individually from £9.00 for 2 courses (min) to £16.45 for three (max).

Heartstart
THE TREMENDOUS and very welcome support for this first-aid training programme, organised and
funded by the British Heart Foundation, has meant that the first four courses at William Kaye Hall,
Ladybrook Lane, are now fully booked.
We still have vacancies for Thursday 22nd August (1.00 - 3.00) and Thursday 19th September
(10.00 - 12.00) though so let me know if you'd like to take part.

Keep Safe
AS WE progress into 2013, I want to thank you for your educational e-mails over the past year. I am
totally screwed-up now and have little chance of recovery.
I can no longer open a bathroom door without using a paper towel, nor let the waitress put lemon
slices in my ice water without worrying about the bacteria on the lemon peel.
I can't sit down on a hotel bedspread because I can only imagine what has happened on it since it
was last washed.
I have trouble shaking hands with someone who has been driving because the number one pastime
while driving alone is picking one's nose.
Eating a little snack sends me on a guilt trip because I can only imagine how many gallons of
trans fats I have consumed over the years.
I can't touch any woman's handbag for fear she has placed it on the floor of a public toilet.
I must send my special thanks for the email about rat poo in the glue on envelopes because I now
have to use a wet sponge with every envelope that needs sealing.
ALSO, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.
I can't have a drink in a bar because I fear I'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice with my kidneys gone.
I can't eat food from a take-away because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no
eyes, feet or feathers.
I can't use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.
Thanks to you I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an e-mail to seven of my
friends and make a wish within five minutes.
Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains.
I no longer buy fuel without taking someone along to watch the car, so a serial killer doesn't crawl in
my back seat when I'm filling up.
I no longer use Cling Wrap in the microwave because it causes seven different types of cancer.
And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave any more because it will
blow up in my face, disfiguring me for life.
I don't go to the cinema because I could sit on a needle infected with AIDS.
I don't go to shopping centres because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.
And I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get
a huge phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore and Uzbekistan.

OUR SPEAKER today is Anita Young who will talk about Ladies in History, The Dickens Fellowship.
Anita will appear in splendid period costume to entertain us with the portrayal of several Dickens
characters.
She will take us back in time with amusing stories of Mrs. Gaskill and readings of George Elliott.
