The English language originated from diverse influences over many centuries. Germanic tribes brought early forms of English to Britain, which was also influenced by Latin during Roman occupation. Multiple invasions and migrations, including by Celts and Vikings, contributed different vocabularies and dialects. Over time, as political powers rose and fell across Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Old English dialects evolved and the language took a more modern form, influenced by Christianization and the written word.
