Question 7- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
1. Looking back at your preliminarytask, what do you feel youhave learnt in the progressionfrom it
to the full product?
My preliminarytaskwasthe firstmediapiece Ihave producedso,Ihad to learnall the skillsinorder
to plan, filmandeditthisshortclip.I hada camerathat was able to accommodate a microphone soI
useditto enhance mypiece andpick upthe voicesclearer. However,Ifilmedoutside asmyideawas
aboutthe beginningof a tennismatchandon the day it wasverywindytherefore, asa resultthis
affectedthe clarityof the voicesandthe soundsof the tennisball.Thishadmajor effectonmy final
editbecause the soundof the windwasveryprominent.Incomparison,Ichose anideathat I could
accommodate the microphone thatwasinside so,evenif the weatherwasnotsuitable itwouldn’t
matter.Aftermakingthismistake of nottakingintoaccountthe weatherIthoughtaboutmy
storyline formy2 minute filmbeginningsothatI coulduse technologytoenhance mypiece.
Anotherfactorthat I had to improve onwasthe focusof the camera because inmypreliminarytask
I had the camera on autofocusand thenthe microphone pickedupthe noise thatthe cameramade
to focuswhichruinedthe soundof the piece so,I tookthat intoaccount and onmy 2 minute film
beginningImanuallyfocussedthe camerabut, itcouldhave beenmore cleartherefore if Icould
redosome shotsI wouldensure the focuswasas clearas possible. However,Icorrectedmyerror
frommy preliminarytasktomy2 minuetfilmbeginning.
As well asthat,I thinkI have beenable tomake mycuts more smoothas,my preliminarytaskisabit
jumpybut,I still needtoworkonmy editingskillsassome cuts inmy 2 minute filmbeginning are a
bitrough still.Also,inmyprelimtaskIdidn’tinclude atitle oranycreditswhichI thencorrectedin
my 2 minute filmbeginninghadtothinkaboutthe textfontto make sure it relatedtothe genre of
my film. Aswell asthatwiththese creditsIaddedeffectssuchas‘dipintoblack’,‘exponentialfade’
and ‘constantgain’.Thishelpedimprove mytaskbecause itaddedtothe genre still andmyend
creditswentwiththe backgroundsoundIchose which made it more dramaticand enhancedmy
genre suspense-thriller.
In mypreliminarytaskIdidn’tplanthe mediapiece inasmuchdepthas the 2 minute filmso, this
affectedthe differenttypesof shots Iusedexceptfromincludingthe criteriawhichwas;180 degree
rule, matchon actionand shot reverse shot.Inthe 2 minute filmbeginningIthoughtabouteach
shotand howthiswouldlinktothe filmgenre andkeyshots.For example:
Trackingshot to show he has arrivedhome andgoing
to findsomeone.
2. Overthe shouldershottoshow all character involvedin
thispiece.
Close-uptoshow the audience thatthe knife isakey
prop andsomethingmayhappen.
Low angle shotto show false sense of powerbeforehe
ismurdered.
Trackingshot to show the panicof the wife.Alsothe
cuts intoblack are insync withthe musicso, itbuilds
more tension.
The shot of the bottomof the opendoorleavesthings
openforthe audience andleavesthe audience guessing
and wonderingwhatwillhappennextwhichaddstothe
genre of thriller-suspense.
3. In mypreliminarytaskIdidn’ttake intoaccountas much detail inwhichshotsIdecidedtoshootbut,
I didpicksome keyshotssuch as:
An establishingshotof the scene tomake
suerthe audience undertsnadthe loaction
of thispiece.
Thisextreme close-upenhancesthatit’sa
seriousgame thatwill be verycompetitive.
Thisclose –up tellsthe audience whois
startingthe game andthat the game is
seriousasit showsthe concentrationof the
players.
Thisshot showsall the charactersin shotand
letsthe audience be able tosee the whole
court and where the ball landsandgets
returnedto.
I wouldstill liketoimprove onmyeditingskillsandlearnwhatmore effectsdosoIcan inputthem
intomy mediapiecestoenhance themandmake thembetter.
