Ideology Ideology is a body of beliefs that belong to an individual or a group. An example of ideology is Nazi Germany. Hitler’s way of thinking caused millions of people to die. Strong beliefs are dangerous when spread. http://www.tobydials.com/td/node/144
Individualism Individualism states that everyone looks after themselves. Freedom, rights and independent action for everyone. An example of individualism is the availability of scholarships. In an individualistic society, the government, or separate groups, would not pay for someone’s tuition. http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/i/individualism.asp
Collectivism Collectivism is the idea that promotes the group over the individual. Example: everyone pays taxes so that there is money for healthcare and public schooling. http://blurringborders.com/2008/08/13/david-brooks-on-false-collectivism/
Liberalism A political orientation that does not involve radical solutions. Instead of revolution, small changes over a period of time is favored. Obama’s new administration is making many changes in an attempt to better the economy. http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_
Self-Interest Similar to individualism, self-interest is the idea that individuals should be free to pursue the improvement of their lives. Someone starting a business, taking the chance that it will fail or succeed. http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/q/quality_of_life.asp
Competition Two or more groups or individuals that both want a scarce resource and compete to get it. Example: Two oil companies want the oil found in the Arctic. They debate over who the land belonged to in the first place. http://www.aisgz.org/highschool/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=283&Itemid=133
Freedom (political /economic) Democracy is based on this idea. People are free to do what they want as long as they do not break the law. Canada’s government is a democracy. It’s citizens have rights such as freedom of speech and the right to vote. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Freedom_House_world_map_2005.png
Rule of Law The rule that everyone can be subjected to the law. No one is exempt, including the government. Authority can only come from the law. Police officers can be charged when they break the law. http://ruleoflaw-vba.org/
Private Property Resources and property should be owned by the individual instead of the government. If something is owned privately it will be taken care of better. If you bring your own computer to school instead of working on a public computer, you will look after it more carefully because you will have to pay to fix or replace it. http://walshcompletelawncare.com/services
Collective Responsibility There are two meanings to collective responsibility. The first is that everyone is to some degree responsible for one another and we all make sacrifices for the benefit of all. The second is the idea that we are all responsible for the actions of our society. During the Holocaust, all of Hitler’s followers shared the responsibility because they were a part of his belief. http://visionaryblogging.com/guides/blog-community/
Collective Interest Something that improves the quality of life of a group of people or satisfies a concern. An army keeps a country safe and takes care of problems it faces. The soldiers in Iraq are working toward a better life for the citizens there. http://www.spangdahlem.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123218161
Cooperation Cooperation is when two groups get along to work toward a common goal. Example: when working on a team you need to cooperate to get it done. http://www.cooperationcommons.org/
Economic Equality A society where there is only a small difference between each person’s wealth. To be truly equal, you cannot have some people living in poverty while others thrive. In Canada, black and white people can make the same amount of money. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/
Collective Norms Normalities that are shared between a group of people. Example: High school students like to dye their hair. http://www.projects-abroad.org/photo-galleries/?content=bolivia/
Public Property Assets are owned or controlled by the government to be used by society. The idea of public property includes the belief that some services are so important that they can’t be left to the individual. Fire trucks used to be owned by the individual, but when turf wars began the government decided that in order to effectively put out the fires the government should control fire departments. http://dailyderbi.com/weekend-pick-fire-truck-vs-really-big-dump-truck/
Belief This is when an individual holds something to be true according to their values. An example of belief is how people believe in different types of religion. http://asweweresaying.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Value Personal and cultural values determine how important something is to us and what type of person you are. Example: Some people place a lot of value on social status or money. http://www.valuequotes.net/
Individual Identity This is when individuals change something about themselves to separate from the group. Example: Dressing in a different way than the people around you. http://www.thesocialsiren.net/
Collective Identity The individual’s sense of belonging to the group. The collective identity forms a part of personal identity. Example: People in a religious group have the same beliefs and enjoy the sense of belonging. http://www.levintel.com/2009/06/04/this-group-is-a-karass/
