4. GRAMMAR-TRANSLATION METHOD
Advantages.
-Easy to learn vocabulary. (For beginners)
-Study the vocabulary and grammar.
Disadvantages.
-The language produced is not «natural».
-Too many steps in the translation.
-There isn´t conversation in target language.
-This method is not good for meaningful learning.
-Low motivation.
-Vocabulary is taught in the form of isolated word lists
5. THE DIRECT METHOD
Advantages.
-Teacher never translates. Always uses the target language.
-The vocabulary is acquired more naturally.
-It is a natural method which teaches language in the same way the
mother tongue is acquired.
-Lessons begin with a dialogue using a modern conversational style in
the target language.
Disadvantages.
-Students don´t produce their own language.
-Reading and writing are very few developed.
-The mother tongue is NEVER used.
6. AUDIO-LINGUAL METHOD
Advantages.
-Students develope the pronunciation and speaking ability.
-They can make sentences automatically.
-Students learn as if they were in a real context of the target language.
Disadvantages.
-Students don`t have to make mistakes, it´s not acceptable.
-They have to pronounce correctly.
-Very little attention is paid to communication and content.
7. TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE METHOD
Advantages.
-It`s fun and easy; students enjoy the class.
-The teacher always uses the target language.
-The learner is a listener and a performer responding to commands
individually or collectively.
-It builds vocabulary.
Disadvantages.
-Students don’t have the opportunity to express their own thoughts in a
creative way.
-It´s not accepted by shy guys.
- Learners may not have enought vocabulary to understand some lessons.
8. SUGGESTOPEDIA METHOD
Advantages.
-Students remember best.
-Suggestopedia encourages the students to apply language more
independently.
-Students are integrated as often as possible.
-The mistakes of the students are tolerated.
Disadvantages.
-Some students don´t like to be treated like children.
-It depends on the trust that students develop towards the method by simply
believing that it works.
9. THE SILENT WAY METHOD
Advantages.
-This method encourages the creativity and discovery.
-Learning is facilitated by accompanying (mediating) physical objects.
-Student develop his own language.
-the student has the opportunity to learn by itself, using the resources provided by
the teacher.
Disadvantages.
-The teacher doesn´t correct the learner´s mistakes .
-The students don´t develop the listening skill.
-The communication is null.
10. COMMUNITY LANGUAGE LEARNING METHOD
Advantages.
-The vocabulary is presented in a real context.
-The learners are autonomous.
-There is always interaction between teacher and student.
-The teacher allow the learners to determine type of conversation and to analyze
the language inductively.
Disadvantages.
-Some students find it difficult to speak on tape.
-Translation is an intricate and difficult task.
-Teacher has to be highly proficient in the target language and in the language of
students.
