What is a Digital Textbook?
Go beyond printed words to make
“textbooks” a fluid concept
Integrate a variety of media
Can be entirely digital or a mix of print and
digital
Digital Textbooks are books that are now
available in a digital format as opposed to
an actual textbook

Digital Textbooks Vs Printed Textbooks
Digital Textbooks Printed Textbooks
Multi-media learning materials
like video and virtual, etc
Type of materials
Text and image centered flat,
linear learning materials
Fast reflection of new facts
and knowledge
Conversion of data
Difficult to convert since data
are fixed
Link to various educational
materials or DBs
Data collection
Much time and cost required
to find data outside textbooks
Information devices (TPCs'
and desktop PCs, etc.)
Contents delivering media Printed media
Possible study between other
grades in the course or linking
to other courses
Relationship to other courses
Individual learning materials
separated between courses
Possible multi-directional
study among teachers,
students and computers

Why are Digital Textbooks Important?
Digital textbooks open students up to the benefits of
technology.
It’s important for students to become comfortable
with technology.
Students and educators can’t stop the future and it’s
in our hands.
Digital textbooks benefit students, teachers, and
schools in general
Digital Textbooks are also being used in the classroom
because a teacher can download the textbooks and
project them on a screen in order to interact with the
students in regards to the textbook materials
The information in digital textbooks are more up-to-
date
Future by ausseigall
Source: Future
Author : History at the Higher Education Academy
Digital textbooks must be:
1. Affordable- they should cost less
than traditional textbooks
2. Printable- teachers should be able
to print excerpts of a digital
textbook at an affordable price
3. Accessible- “students should be
able to access digital textbooks
online, store them for use offline,
and keep a copy for future use”
(Allen, 2008)
Who produces digital textbooks?
Textbook publishing companies like: Pearson, Glencoe/McGraw Hill,
and Harcourt
Digital textbook developers such as learning.com and Kinetic Books
Non-profit, open source organizations such as CK-12
Three major textbook publishers — Pearson, McGraw-Hill, and
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt — are working to provide content priced
at $14.99 and under using digital text books.

with the latest information in order
to keep students up-to-date
What are
the
Advantages
to Schools?
Saves schools money!
Allows teachers to be more
innovative in their methods
Integrates technology into
education
Digital textbooks are easily
adaptable
Digital Textbooks are used on a
computer or other electronic
devices which makes them eco
friendly.
Digital Textbooks can be updated.
They are eco friendly.
What are the Benefits for
Students?
Students don’t have to carry around lots
of heavy and expensive books!
Learning becomes more interactive and
interesting
Digital textbooks employ a variety of
multimedia

The Impact on Educators
The digital textbooks will hold more information than a
regular textbooks.
Teachers will have to adjust to the changes.
Students will be able to complete assignments on their
own.
Homework by Little Silver

Drawbacks and Disadvantages
Many schools do not have enough
computers to use digital textbooks
Open-source digital textbooks may
contain unreliable information
Many students would be unable to
access digital textbooks at home
Homework must be done at a
computer.
Students will not be able to flip
through the textbook because it will
be on a computer.
A sense of traditional textbooks is
gone.

The use of digital
textbooks would require:
1) Money
2) Teach training
3) Bandwidth
4) Computers
(Surdin, 2009)
Some school districts
complain that digital
textbooks haven’t met
educational standards.
Other school districts are
worried about digital
textbooks costing more
than originally planned.
(Chung, 2009)
Not every student has access to a
computer which widens the digital
divide . (Lewin, 2009)
Since these are open source
materials not everyone trusts them
to be accurate
CRITICISM ABOUT DIGITAL TEXTBOOKS
Students no longer need
to spend money on
textbooks
As long as students have
a computer in front of
them, they can access
materials needed for
their classes
Students are kept up-to-
date with the latest news
It may cost more money
to buy computers and
bandwidth than schools
save by not buying
textbooks
Not all students have
computers to access the
textbooks
Not all teachers are
ready to deal with the
changes in technology

Case Study 1 - Shaping the Path to Digital: The Indiana
University eTexts Initiative
More than half of the students (about 60 percent) preferred eTexts to print, with the
scores ranging from 84 percent to 36 percent, depending on the course. [snip]. The
students especially preferred eTexts when the instructors actively used the text and
provided annotations for the students. Students were also more likely to prefer eTexts if
they had used one in a previous class.
Instructor annotations, sustainability, and cost were the top three reasons students gave
for preferring eTexts. Students also appreciated the fact that eTexts were not as heavy
as regular textbooks and liked the options for adding and sharing their own annotations
... .
About 22 percent of the students reported that they read more of the eTexts than they
would have if they were using a printed text; conversely, 55 percent said they read less
than they would have from a printed text.
In general, students reported very few issues in making the transition to eTexts. Ten
percent of those surveyed retained their preference for printed textbooks; however,
system logs showed that 68 percent of the students printed no pages during the pilot
study, and only 19 percent printed more than fifty pages. [snip].
Faculty participating in the study reported that using eTexts made them think more about
the text they were choosing for their class and how they could use it more effectively to
improve their teaching.
Case Study – 2 Embedded Digital Textbooks in Online
Courses: Case Study of Enrollment Trends, Outcomes and
Student Satisfaction
Brandman University completed a pilot program to combine
delivery of embedded digital textbooks
• Findings showed no difference in enrollment or student
retention between online courses
utilizing digital textbooks and online courses utilizing
physical textbooks.
• Findings indicated that students who completed a course
utilizing embedded online text were more satisfied, open
to using online texts in the future, and showed less
preference towards physical textbooks.
• In addition, textbook cost factors appeared to have a
direct impact on student satisfaction with both the text and
the course.
Case Study - 3 Digital Textbooks in California
California recently approved 10 digital textbooks for
classroom use
They are for high school math and science classes
All 10 textbooks are open source collaborations and
free
Gov. Schwarzenegger hopes it will save money and
update textbooks
California’s Digital Textbooks
Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to
promote digital textbooks in schools.
A state law in California was passed.
There is more information in digital
textbooks.

Legislation Issues
Some believe this favors schools that have more
money.
Teachers and students would need time to adapt
to the changes.
Although it is a good idea, it’s not going to work.
Digital Textbooks are easy to use and can be used by anyone.
Technology is growing and we must adapt.
They are eco-friendly.
Digital textbooks enhance student learning
They allow teachers to teach more effectively
Digital textbooks are potential cost-savers for school districts
They enhance curriculum by integrating technology and multimedia
There are benefits and draw backs to digital textbooks for educators
and students.
The switch to digital textbooks is already in the process.

  1. Current printed textbooks do not reflect new ways that students learn and interact. Modern students are comfortable with digital resources, and are accustomed to interactive, collaborative, and flexible content found online. Current textbooks reflect outmoded ways of learning that are too linear and restrictive to engage students and can hinder teachers ability to engage students with new methods and materials.
  2. Digital textbooks offer interactive and engaging ways for students to learn and teachers to teach. They provide a variety of multimedia in a format that students are comfortable with. They reflect modern ways of learning that focus on collaboration and interaction. Digital textbooks can be adapted to fit almost any learning environment, grade level, or district requirement because they are digital and can easily be changed for specific purposes. Similarly, digital textbooks can be produced for low, or even no cost. An example of this is the CK-12 foundation which creates digital “flexbooks” that are free and easily customizable.
  3. Digital Textbooks are textbooks that are bought and downloaded online or can be used on devices like an iPad or Kindle. They can be read over the computer as a virtual book. Many schools will be switching to digital textbooks because they are cost efficient and environmentally friendly. Students can take them and read them anywhere which makes them versatile and effective. In addition, students will be able to pull up the textbooks on their computer instead of flipping through the book which will make them more engaging. Digital Textbooks are a new form of technology that is growing and students should be preparing to see them brought to the classroom in the near future.
  4. Digital Textbooks are being brought to schools for teachers and students to use. Students K-12 will become familiar with this technology tool and learn how to navigate it through the years. In addition, teachers will learn how to navigate and utilize the textbooks. They will adapt their ways of teaching to include a wider range of teaching that digital textbooks will promote and allow. Digital textbooks are growing and as a result they are branching outside of the schools to everyone.
  5. It is switching to a global economy, therefore technology is becoming a part of everyday life. It’s important to start introducing students to technology on a daily basis in various ways so they can prepare for the future. Digital textbooks are one more step in the right direction. This is a way to start getting kids to go online and get comfortable with the internet. They will learn how to operate and use technology to their benefits in a very simple way. In the future, students will be able to learn more on their own more effectively so they can become technologically advances. Students and educators can’t promote the future from happening, therefore, they should jump into technology with an open mind. Using the internet for textbooks is an easy way to do so. It’s time to say good bye to the old ways and say hello to the new.
  6. There are three important aspects of digital textbooks. According to writer Nicole Allen, digital textbooks should be affordable, printable, and accessible to all students.
  7. Digital textbooks are produced by many different types of companies. Traditional publishing companies have created digital textbooks, usually as companions or supplements to printed textbooks. Technology companies such as learning.com and Kinetic Books have developed digital textbooks as a stand alone classroom resource. And non-profit organizations like CK-12 have created open source textbooks that can be downloaded for free.
  8. Digital textbooks will impact students of all ages. Even younger kids are more interested in technology, which will make them more engaged in digital textbooks. Also, college students will have an interest in going digital because it saves them a lot of money.
  9. Digital textbooks provide a variety of benefits to school districts that adopt them. They can bring textbook costs down, and open source digital textbooks are free. Digital textbooks bring technology into the classroom, and with it new learning experiences for students. Also, digital textbooks are easily adaptable to state and district standards, or to the needs of individual classrooms.
  10. Using digital textbooks also benefits students in a variety of ways. By including a variety of multimedia, digital textbooks create a learning environment where modern students, who are used to online multimedia, feel comfortable. Learning becomes a more interactive process, because students have the ability to learn using many different methods.
  11. Educators will also feel the impact of switching over to digital textbooks. If students have access to more information, teachers will need to teach more information to their students. Because digital textbooks are online, they will have the ability to hold even more information than regular textbooks. Students will have this information at their fingertips which will make it easy for them to explore and learn on their own. Students are becoming more and more interested in technology, therefore, they will be willing to search and complete assignments on their own. Teachers will have to adjust so they can keep up with the new wave of technology and their students increasing knowledge.
  12. The lack of computers in many school, especially in poorer districts, would make it difficult to use digital textbooks. Likewise, many students would be unable to access digital materials at home because of lack of computer or high speed internet access. Critics also claim that open source textbooks, such as those approved by California, could contain unreliable or untrue information, which would misinform students.
  13. Although some schools are very excited about digital textbooks, some schools think the consequences outweigh the benefits. Though digital textbooks themselves don’t cost as much as regular textbooks, the price of computers and bandwidth is going to be expensive. Also, not every student has access to a computer which makes it impossible for these students to use digital textbooks.
  14. Overall, there are many pros and cons of digital textbooks. Whether people like it or not, the world is becoming a more technological place and students are learning to use technology at a young age. Bringing this change in technology to schools will hopefully benefit students, teachers, and schools all over the world.
  15. The adoption of 10 open-source digital textbooks by California for use in high school math and science classes is the largest use of digital textbooks by any state yet. Governor. Schwarzenegger approved their use as a method to cut costs and provide updated resources for students to use. The textbooks are available to teachers, but use of these textbooks is voluntary.
  16. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is the mayor of California, had passed a law to bring digital textbooks to the classrooms. He has found 10 free digital textbooks for math and science that will be brought the school systems. He believe it will save a great deal of money for the schools because they won’t have to buy new textbooks. Instead there will be updates that are free. Students won’t have to carry around a heavy backpack which has been a complain from students for some time now. Also, instead of printing off mass amounts of paper, digital textbooks will be another solution to being eco-friendly. A law was pasted stating that by 2020 the schools in California will switch to digital textbooks to save money and become eco-friendly. With the rapid growth, many believe digital textbooks will become a big hit before the year of 2020. The switch is already being made in California and soon will hit other states in our country. By 2020 digital textbooks will be an accustomed changed. Educators and students are preparing to make the switch and the rest of should as well.
  17. Some schools are more privileged than others and as a result they may have a greater number of computers. If schools don’t have a computer to each student, they will have to double up or even triple up on one computer. This may pose a problem for educators and learners. Switching to digital textbooks would also take a great toll on the schools with less money. Although Arnold Schwarzenegger believes costs will be cut greatly, not everyone agrees with him. The economy isn’t strong right now and as a result, the timing for digital textbooks may be off. Students and teachers would both need to adapt the the changes digital textbooks would bring. If schools prefer to use IPads or Kindels for each student, that would be a massive expense considering both those technologies are fairly new. Teachers that haven’t had much experience with technology would also utilize digital textbooks and they may have a harder time navigating. Although this is a good idea, many believe it won’t work. So many are comfortable with using printed textbooks and as a result, many may be reluctant to switch over. Despite these claims, teachers and students across the nation will make the switch and learn to use this new technology.
  18. Digital textbooks are the new wave of technology hitting America. They are textbooks that can be viewed on the computer by anyone. They are easy for anyone to use and contain a wider range of information than regular textbooks do. Technology is growing and young students must learn to adapt and be comfortable with our global economy. This will provide them with new tools of learning and new ways to use a computer. Digital textbooks are cost efficient and will save schools a lot of money now and in the future. In addition to being cost effective, they are eco-friendly because they don’t use paper. This will lead to a decrease in paper use. Digital textbooks are reusable and less expensive to update. Although there are drawbacks, such as loss of comfort and a hard copy, there are many benefits as well. Educators and teachers over time will learn to adapt to the new technology.
