Routines to Last a Lifetime

§  What you do is important; how you do things is equally important. For

instance, brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day is great
– but not if you can only get motivated enough to do so on Monday or
Tuesday before giving up for the rest of the week.

§  Many of my patients leave my office often vowing to brush twice and

floss once every day; and they do so, for a week or two. Then old habits
die hard, and they settle into the familiar routine of brushing once or
twice a day and flossing once or twice – before their next dental visit!

§  Relax; I am not here to scold you, lecture you or nag you about brushing

and flossing regularly. I know other dentists have probably been there and
done that. However, I am here to give you the good news: good habits are
as easy to practice as bad ones and, even better, they last forever!
Routines to Last a Lifetime

§  If you’re having a hard time fitting proper dental care into your routine,

you’re not alone; many of my patients find it just as difficult to care for
their teeth properly. That’s why I’ve come up with the following quick
tips to help you replace bad habits with good ones, and care for your new
A-List Smile every day:
§  Out with the old, in with the new: You need to identify your bad habits

before you can replace them. So take some time now to pinpoint your top
five or, if you have that many, your top ten worst habits. They can range
from not brushing your teeth at night to using mouthwash instead of
brushing to eating too much candy and/or soda and so on. But the sooner
you recognize what bad habits you’re dealing with, the sooner you’ll
know what you have to do to replace them with good ones.

§  Replace for your face: Healthy eating isn’t always easy. Convenient, junk,

fast and just plain bad food is easier to get, prepare, buy and eat than food
that’s good for you. I understand that. So instead of trying to cut out
every bad food, instead replace just one bad food a meal with something
healthier. For instance, if you eat two donuts for breakfast every day, why
not try replacing one of those donuts with an apple tomorrow? It may not
entirely undo the damage you cause with the one donut you’re still eating,
but the healthy apple can go a long way toward rectifying the damage two
donuts might have done. Chances are, as you practice this habit, you will
eventually do away with donuts altogether.

§  Timing is everything: If brushing and flossing regularly is conflicting

with your schedule, take a look at WHY there is a conflict in the first
place and what you can do about it. For instance, maybe you were
taught as a child – as so many of us were – to brush your teeth just
before bed. Well, if you’re too tired at bedtime to brush and floss,
don’t wait so long; reverse the trend and brush and floss right after you
eat dinner. This is just one of many ways where simply changing a
habit or mindset can literally help you form a new habit – for life.

§  Publish your progress: Remember how when you were a kid your parents

used to proudly place your artwork, spelling test or good grade of the day
on the fridge? Well, don’t be afraid to do the same for your good habits.
Make a chart and keep track of your progress, even adding a gold star for
every day you brush twice and floss once. Sure, it may seem hokey at first
but give yourself a month and chances are, your little chart might just turn
into one great, big habit!

A-List Advice:

§  They say “practice makes perfect,” but actually only “perfect practice

makes perfect.” This means that if you practice something wrong – like
using the wrong type of brush for your A-List Smile— you can actually
do more harm than good. So by all means practice, but remember to
practice perfect for optimum results.
