_____News, Tools, Reports and Shout-Outs______
My dear friends Paul and
Sabriye, co-founders of
KANTHARI have a new
documentary film about a visit to
kanthari graduates in Kenya and
Uganda made in 2014.
“KANTHARI: change from
within” advocates for a more
inclusive development aid model,
where people from marginalized
communities who have the
potential to bring change are
identified and empowered to
carry out their plans for social
change.
The work of 4 Kanthari graduates
is highlighted; Monicah who
fights female circumcision, Jayne
Waithera who fights the killing of
2
people who live with Albinism, Stephen who started an empowerment center for aids orphans, and
Ojok, who, when a rebel soldier hit him on the head when he was 9 years old, became partially sighted
and who now trains blind people to become bee keepers. It is a very touching film that shows the
potential of people who have been affected by social ill and because of that not only carry a plan for
social change but actually stand up and do something to create a better tomorrow.
The film premiered at the "All about Freedom Film Festival" at the European Solidarity Center in
Gdansk. There they met with former Polish President Lech Walesa who stated that everyone should
see this film to learn about solidarity and the power from within. The filmmaker is looking for a
distributor. The film is not officially out yet. At the moment it is shown in several film festivals. The
trailer can be found at: http://kantharichangefromwithin.com/
Have you overcome some serious challenges in life and because of that carry a plan to change the
world? #kanthari in Kerala, South of India, offers a leadership course that might just be right for you.
The next course starts in May 2017. Check out the video and apply now! https://youtu.be/Nv5-

The myth that 501(c)(3)'s can't engage in advocacy
Many nonprofits in the U.S. stay away from advocacy with the
mindset that if they venture into politics they will lose support and
their 501(c)(3) status. But is that true? In actuality, advocacy done
right can make a huge difference for an organization. In this
npEngage.com blog post, discover the benefits of having an online
advocacy strategy and how to measure the ROI of an advocacy effort.

“Change the World”
It always struck me that saying that sounded a lot like grandiose hubris, or at best, a dauntingly
overwhelming task. The utter impossibility of it seemed certain until I realized that it can mean
helping one person at a time. That is a theme you’ll see throughout this book and our websites
and our work. I have added some of my LinkedIn Influencer blogs/essays that I hope may be
inspirational, also. The format of this book is inspired by Brian Eno’s A Year with Swollen
Appendices, not so much the diary aspect but rather the overwhelmingly large collection of
information in the various appendices. Additionally, this book is an “analog” version, if you will,
of the content and links found at the Center for Global Initiatives website and the associated
DropBox account.
Open-Sourced Humanitarian Interventionism
It’s long been my goal to make life easier for those working in humanitarian and volunteer
endeavors, as well as those in need of help. Indeed, in one way or another, we all need help in
one form or another. So, just about everything you find herein and on the Center’s website, is
free of charge, and a lot you could also find for yourself. What I’ve tried to do is speed up the
search, vet what has been found, and then curate the results, making them as readily and easily
available as I know how to. This is my dream of open-sourcing humanitarian work.
Current Content, For Pretty Close To Forever
The reason for this “reverse engineering” is twofold. First, the amount of content and links on
the Center’s website may not always be apparent to the novel user. This book allows for near
complete exposure to the functional tools and content that await the online user. Second, this
book will never be out-of-date, in that when new content becomes available via uploads to the
DropBox account, you’ll be able to read that as well. All you have to do is email me and ask to be
linked. I curate the content constantly. You can also request being added to our mailing list via
my email address as well if you’d like to be kept up-to-date on events and other relevant content.
We welcome your joining!
All proceeds from sales of this book will be donated to the Center for Global Initiatives.

ZIKA VIRUS
Imaging Study Confirms Vast Brain Damage
Medical images published Tuesday in the journal Radiology show how severely Zika infects the
brains of fetuses, revealing that microcephaly “is just the tip of iceberg.”
A team of neurologists in Boston and doctors in northeastern Brazil analyzed images from 93
ultrasounds as well as 23 MRI and 41 CT scans of 46 fetuses and babies born to mothers who
had Zika during pregnancy.
One baby in the study was born with a normal-size head. "But when you look inside the brain
there's very little brain tissue present," said Deborah Levine, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center in Boston. NPR’s Goats and Soda Blog

Learning from Success
A recent breakthrough in vaccine development for dengue fever has researchers hopeful about
creating a serum to address the Zika virus. Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of
Public Health researcher Anna Durbin and her team successfully tested a dengue vaccine that
protected 100% of human volunteers.
In a brief interview, Durbin discusses characteristics of the Zika virus, and compares its traits to
those of mosquito-borne virus cousins, such as dengue or West Nile. Durbin also highlights
some of the potential obstacles to speedy vaccine development, safe human trials and data
collection. Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine

Past Informs the Present
Zika’s unique categorization as a teratogen—a pathogen that can cause a birth defect because of
something the mother was exposed to during pregnancy—prompted researchers to turn to a
fellow teratogen, Rubella, as a way to better understand the disease.
By studying Rubella, researchers may be able to figure out how sterilizing immunity could work,
and the effectiveness of various methods of controlling transmission. PLOS

Stigmatized Burial Workers
Burial workers involved in West Africa’s Ebola crisis still suffer lasting trauma and social stigma
from the harrowing work, according to Newsweek.
In interviews, several former burial workers acknowledge experiencing symptoms of “post-
traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, [and] depression,” while others admit to self-medicating with
alcohol and hard drugs. Female burial workers say they face added difficulties because their
participation was viewed as a violation of societal gender norms.
Additionally, mental health treatment promised by NGOs to workers has either not been
forthcoming or has been hampered by antiquated and inadequate health care systems.
“We did this job to help our country,” one former worker says. “And in return we get this.”

KALA AZAR
The Overlooked Killer
Would you be able to name the largest parasitic killer after malaria?
It’s kala azar, it’s endemic in nearly 50 countries, and an estimated 200 million people are at risk.
It’s also known as Leishmaniasis and black fever—and the “poor man’s disease,” not only because
it disproportionately afflicts the poor, but because it is a disabling disease that intensifies their
poverty. Lepra, an NGO active in this area, estimates that there are 201,500–378,500 cases per
year of the disease.
Like many neglected diseases, treatments exist—it’s the poor access to treatment that proves
devastatingly out of reach for too many in need.

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
Pharma Pollution
Irresponsible pharmaceutical companies fuel the proliferation of superbugs through supply chain
pollution, the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) reports.
The advocacy group uncovered lapses such as dirty production and inadequate waste disposal in
the production of antimicrobials in China and India, which supplies most of the antimicrobials
consumed in Europe.
In a briefing detailing the pollution, the EPHA urges major purchasers of antibiotics to blacklist
irresponsible pharmaceutical companies, demand that the industry clean up its supply chain,
introduce greater transparency on the origin of antibiotics, and review and revise procurement

policies from an ethics perspective. EPHA
Philanthropies Waking Up to Threat
With the threat of antibiotic resistance looming large, foundations are backing more efforts to
reduce overuse, speed the development of new drugs and more.
Kristina Strain takes stock of their efforts:
• The Pew Charitable Trusts is focusing on overuse of antibiotics in food animals like
chicken.
• The Gates Foundation opened a Grand Challenge competition this year on
antimicrobial resistance, focused on better tracking data.
• In July, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Boston University
School of Law, the Wellcome Trust and the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Centre
announced a $350 million project, CARB-X, designed to speed development of new
antibiotics and swift diagnostics.

MATERNAL HEALTH
India’s New Maternity Law Ignores Vulnerable Workers
The Indian Parliament’s passage of the landmark Maternity Benefits Act 1961 draws praise for
upping paid leave for mothers to 26 weeks over the current 12.
But the law benefits only a small percentage of women in the organized sector, leaving behind
the large number working in contractual labor, farmers and the self-employed.
The Quote: “The moment a woman becomes pregnant she is seen as a liability. The new law has
no provisions to eliminate this mindset,” said Kavita Krishnan, secretary of the All India
Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA). IPS

Debate in Dagestan
A leading Russian mufti recently responded to an independent report criticizing the practice of
female genital mutilation in Russia (FGM) by endorsing the act. Ismail Berdiev, chairman of the
North Caucasus Muslim Coordinating Center in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, called for
the circumcision of all women “to end depravity on earth and reduce sexuality.”
Support from FGM is not required under Islamic law, and the practice has been characterized by
the UN as a form of torture.
Though Berdiev received some support, most notably from a prominent Russian Orthodox
17
Christian priest, his statement prompted widespread condemnation on social media. As a result,
a new law banning the practice nationwide has been proposed by a member of the Russian
parliament. Human Rights Watch
ATTACKS ON HEALTH WORKERS
Deny and Deprive
Ongoing unrest in Mozambique continues to spawn raids at clinics and hospitals in the country.
In the past month, the country’s opposition party, the Mozambique National Resistance
(RENAMO), looted at least 4 health facilities. They’ve absconded with medicines, damaged
equipment and left thousands without access to care.
Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch, calls the raids part of RENAMO’s
“repugnant strategy . . . to deny crucial health services to Mozambicans who need them.”

CONFLICT
Another Woe of War
Lead particles in air pollution created by explosions and the burning of military waste may
explain rising incidences of birth defects and cancers in Iraq, according to a study in
Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.
The study revealed extremely high levels of lead in the baby teeth of Iraqi children, compared to
levels in baby teeth donated by Iranian and Lebanese children.
This finding is further supported by anecdotal evidence from doctors in the region, as well as

Syrians view hospitals as such likely bombing targets that they have discouraged aid agencies
from opening new medical centers, even in communities without direct access to medical care.
The situation highlights the frequency with which health workers—once thought to be protected
by the rules of war—are being targeted in the Syrian conflict. According to the WHO, nearly
1,000 people have been killed in attacks on health centers worldwide over the past 2 years, with
Syria accounting for nearly 40% of that total. Thomas Reuters Foundation

CHOLERA
Peacekeepers’ Persistently Poor Sanitation
For the first time last week, the UN owned up to its role in the 2010 Haiti cholera epidemic,
which killed 10,000 people. The acknowledgment followed the publication of an internal audit
that revealed chronic poor sanitation management by UN Peacekeepers in Haiti and 6 other
locations, ranging from South Sudan to Lebanon.
The failings included insufficient treatment and improper disposal of wastewater. The UN says it
has addressed 13 of the auditors’ “critical recommendations” and 14 of their 19 “important
recommendations.” Audits will continue this year and next in the Central African Republic,
Mali and Somalia. The New York Times
HUMANITARIAN DISASTERS
Too Often Neglected
With mortality rates estimated at 4X higher than emergency thresholds in some of the 15 local
government areas formerly held by Boko Haram insurgents, and the rate of severe acute
malnutrition hovering at 14%, the WHO is ramping up response in northeastern Nigeria.
Measles and polio have also been reported in the area. Further complicating a challenging work
environment are forecasts of major floods as the rainy season peaks.
Protracted conflict situations are associated with the world’s highest rates of death among
children and pregnant women and can also be breeding grounds for infectious diseases, “but are
too often neglected by the international community,” said Peter Salama, executive director of
WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme. UN News Centre
YELLOW FEVER
In Search of Vaccines
Vector control is a poor substitute for vaccines in a yellow fever outbreak, but despite 6,100
suspected yellow fever cases in Angola and the Congo—and 400 deaths—there’s been little else to
show for the response so far.
Since December 2015, a vaccine shortage and bungled distribution have fueled increasing
concern over the virus’s spread. “Many people believe that yellow fever in Asia is really just a
matter of time,” said Bruce Aylward, ad interim executive director of WHO’s Outbreaks and
Health Emergencies Cluster. Yet the regions most at risk are also the least vaccinated.
“If you wrapped a thick piece of yellow caution tape around the equator of a standard-sized
classroom globe, you’d have a good sense of the major world regions at risk in this outbreak,”
writes Emily J. Baumgaertner. The Washington Post
Diagnostic Failures
A lack of official diagnoses is hampering ongoing efforts to control a yellow fever outbreak in
19
Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), amid concerns that some of the 100,000-
plus Chinese expats working there could carry the disease home to Asia unnoticed.
Steve Ahuka of DRC's National Institute of Biomedical Research said that at least 1 month had
passed between the analyses of suspected yellow fever samples. Failure to get ahead of the disease
is resulting in a major depletion of the global stockpile of yellow fever vaccine, which could prove
disastrous if the outbreak reaches an urban environment. Scientific American

HIV/AIDS
Stigma Stops Patient Care
People who are HIV-positive in China still face stigma and discrimination in the country’s
medical system.
National regulations set a decade ago were meant to prevent hospitals from refusing to treat
HIV-positive patients, but prospective patients report difficulty in getting surgery and other care
when they disclose their HIV status.
One surgeon at a top Shangai hospital told a reporter, “HIV is more lethal than hepatitis B and
other viruses. It’s just a job and I don’t want put my life at risk.” South China Morning Post
ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE
India’s Babies Dying from Superbugs
Nearly 1/3 of the world’s newborn deaths occur in India where 58,000 babies die annually from
superbugs.
With that number bound to increase, "India is absolutely in the frontline for the problem of
antibiotic resistance globally," says Ramanan Laxminarayan, director of the Centre for Disease
Dynamics, Economics and Policy, based in New Delhi and Washington DC.
Recent successes in reducing the country's infant mortality rate are at risk. And the rise of
antibiotic-resistant bacteria threatens to extend far beyond India's borders. Researchers have
found that at least 1 antibiotic-resistant bacteria first identified in India has now spread to more
than 70 countries. Al Jazeera

2016 September Tools for Change CGI Newsletter

  • 1. 1 Greetings and welcome to the latest edition of the CGI Newsletter Dr. Chris Stout, Editor Gracie Wang, Asst-Editor Volume III, Number 9 September 2016 _____News, Tools, Reports and Shout-Outs______ My dear friends Paul and Sabriye, co-founders of KANTHARI have a new documentary film about a visit to kanthari graduates in Kenya and Uganda made in 2014. “KANTHARI: change from within” advocates for a more inclusive development aid model, where people from marginalized communities who have the potential to bring change are identified and empowered to carry out their plans for social change. The work of 4 Kanthari graduates is highlighted; Monicah who fights female circumcision, Jayne Waithera who fights the killing of
  • 2. 2 people who live with Albinism, Stephen who started an empowerment center for aids orphans, and Ojok, who, when a rebel soldier hit him on the head when he was 9 years old, became partially sighted and who now trains blind people to become bee keepers. It is a very touching film that shows the potential of people who have been affected by social ill and because of that not only carry a plan for social change but actually stand up and do something to create a better tomorrow. The film premiered at the "All about Freedom Film Festival" at the European Solidarity Center in Gdansk. There they met with former Polish President Lech Walesa who stated that everyone should see this film to learn about solidarity and the power from within. The filmmaker is looking for a distributor. The film is not officially out yet. At the moment it is shown in several film festivals. The trailer can be found at: http://kantharichangefromwithin.com/ Have you overcome some serious challenges in life and because of that carry a plan to change the world? #kanthari in Kerala, South of India, offers a leadership course that might just be right for you. • 12. 12 “Change the World” It always struck me that saying that sounded a lot like grandiose hubris, or at best, a dauntingly overwhelming task. The utter impossibility of it seemed certain until I realized that it can mean helping one person at a time. That is a theme you’ll see throughout this book and our websites and our work. I have added some of my LinkedIn Influencer blogs/essays that I hope may be inspirational, also. The format of this book is inspired by Brian Eno’s A Year with Swollen Appendices, not so much the diary aspect but rather the overwhelmingly large collection of information in the various appendices. Additionally, this book is an “analog” version, if you will, of the content and links found at the Center for Global Initiatives website and the associated DropBox account. Open-Sourced Humanitarian Interventionism It’s long been my goal to make life easier for those working in humanitarian and volunteer endeavors, as well as those in need of help. Indeed, in one way or another, we all need help in one form or another. So, just about everything you find herein and on the Center’s website, is free of charge, and a lot you could also find for yourself. What I’ve tried to do is speed up the search, vet what has been found, and then curate the results, making them as readily and easily available as I know how to. This is my dream of open-sourcing humanitarian work. Current Content, For Pretty Close To Forever The reason for this “reverse engineering” is twofold. First, the amount of content and links on the Center’s website may not always be apparent to the novel user. This book allows for near complete exposure to the functional tools and content that await the online user. Second, this book will never be out-of-date, in that when new content becomes available via uploads to the DropBox account, you’ll be able to read that as well. All you have to do is email me and ask to be linked. I curate the content constantly. You can also request being added to our mailing list via my email address as well if you’d like to be kept up-to-date on events and other relevant content. We welcome your joining! All proceeds from sales of this book will be donated to the Center for Global Initiatives.

One baby in the study was born with a normal-size head. • 14. 14 Learning from Success A recent breakthrough in vaccine development for dengue fever has researchers hopeful about creating a serum to address the Zika virus. Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health researcher Anna Durbin and her team successfully tested a dengue vaccine that protected 100% of human volunteers. In a brief interview, Durbin discusses characteristics of the Zika virus, and compares its traits to those of mosquito-borne virus cousins, such as dengue or West Nile. Durbin also highlights some of the potential obstacles to speedy vaccine development, safe human trials and data collection. • 15. 15 EBOLA Stigmatized Burial Workers Burial workers involved in West Africa’s Ebola crisis still suffer lasting trauma and social stigma from the harrowing work, according to Newsweek. In interviews, several former burial workers acknowledge experiencing symptoms of “post- traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, [and] depression,” while others admit to self-medicating with alcohol and hard drugs. Female burial workers say they face added difficulties because their participation was viewed as a violation of societal gender norms. Additionally, mental health treatment promised by NGOs to workers has either not been forthcoming or has been hampered by antiquated and inadequate health care systems. “We did this job to help our country,” one former worker says. “And in return we get this.” Newsweek KALA AZAR The Overlooked Killer Would you be able to name the largest parasitic killer after malaria? It’s kala azar, it’s endemic in nearly 50 countries, and an estimated 200 million people are at risk. It’s also known as Leishmaniasis and black fever—and the “poor man’s disease,” not only because it disproportionately afflicts the poor, but because it is a disabling disease that intensifies their poverty. Lepra, an NGO active in this area, estimates that there are 201,500–378,500 cases per year of the disease. Like many neglected diseases, treatments exist—it’s the poor access to treatment that proves devastatingly out of reach for too many in need. The advocacy group uncovered lapses such as dirty production and inadequate waste disposal in the production of antimicrobials in China and India, which supplies most of the antimicrobials consumed in Europe. In a briefing detailing the pollution, the EPHA urges major purchasers of antibiotics to blacklist irresponsible pharmaceutical companies, demand that the industry clean up its supply chain, introduce greater transparency on the origin of antibiotics, and review and revise procurement

EPHA Philanthropies Waking Up to Threat With the threat of antibiotic resistance looming large, foundations are backing more efforts to reduce overuse, speed the development of new drugs and more. Kristina Strain takes stock of their efforts: • The Pew Charitable Trusts is focusing on overuse of antibiotics in food animals like chicken. • The Gates Foundation opened a Grand Challenge competition this year on antimicrobial resistance, focused on better tracking data. • In July, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Boston University School of Law, the Wellcome Trust and the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Centre announced a $350 million project, CARB-X, designed to speed development of new antibiotics and swift diagnostics. But the law benefits only a small percentage of women in the organized sector, leaving behind the large number working in contractual labor, farmers and the self-employed. The Quote: “The moment a woman becomes pregnant she is seen as a liability. The new law has no provisions to eliminate this mindset,” said Kavita Krishnan, secretary of the All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA). IPS FGM Debate in Dagestan A leading Russian mufti recently responded to an independent report criticizing the practice of female genital mutilation in Russia (FGM) by endorsing the act. Ismail Berdiev, chairman of the North Caucasus Muslim Coordinating Center in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, called for the circumcision of all women “to end depravity on earth and reduce sexuality.” Support from FGM is not required under Islamic law, and the practice has been characterized by the UN as a form of torture. Though Berdiev received some support, most notably from a prominent Russian Orthodox

Human Rights Watch ATTACKS ON HEALTH WORKERS Deny and Deprive Ongoing unrest in Mozambique continues to spawn raids at clinics and hospitals in the country. In the past month, the country’s opposition party, the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO), looted at least 4 health facilities. They’ve absconded with medicines, damaged equipment and left thousands without access to care. Daniel Bekele, Africa director at Human Rights Watch, calls the raids part of RENAMO’s “repugnant strategy . . . to deny crucial health services to Mozambicans who need them.” Human Rights Watch CONFLICT Another Woe of War Lead particles in air pollution created by explosions and the burning of military waste may explain rising incidences of birth defects and cancers in Iraq, according to a study in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. The study revealed extremely high levels of lead in the baby teeth of Iraqi children, compared to levels in baby teeth donated by Iranian and Lebanese children. This finding is further supported by anecdotal evidence from doctors in the region, as well as returning military personnel. The Guardian Why Syrians Refuse New Hospitals Syrians view hospitals as such likely bombing targets that they have discouraged aid agencies from opening new medical centers, even in communities without direct access to medical care. The situation highlights the frequency with which health workers—once thought to be protected by the rules of war—are being targeted in the Syrian conflict. According to the WHO, nearly 1,000 people have been killed in attacks on health centers worldwide over the past 2 years, with Syria accounting for nearly 40% of that total. • 18. 18 CHOLERA Peacekeepers’ Persistently Poor Sanitation For the first time last week, the UN owned up to its role in the 2010 Haiti cholera epidemic, which killed 10,000 people. The acknowledgment followed the publication of an internal audit that revealed chronic poor sanitation management by UN Peacekeepers in Haiti and 6 other locations, ranging from South Sudan to Lebanon. The failings included insufficient treatment and improper disposal of wastewater. The UN says it has addressed 13 of the auditors’ “critical recommendations” and 14 of their 19 “important recommendations.” Audits will continue this year and next in the Central African Republic, Mali and Somalia. The New York Times HUMANITARIAN DISASTERS Too Often Neglected With mortality rates estimated at 4X higher than emergency thresholds in some of the 15 local government areas formerly held by Boko Haram insurgents, and the rate of severe acute malnutrition hovering at 14%, the WHO is ramping up response in northeastern Nigeria. Measles and polio have also been reported in the area. Further complicating a challenging work environment are forecasts of major floods as the rainy season peaks. Protracted conflict situations are associated with the world’s highest rates of death among children and pregnant women and can also be breeding grounds for infectious diseases, “but are too often neglected by the international community,” said Peter Salama, executive director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme. UN News Centre YELLOW FEVER In Search of Vaccines Vector control is a poor substitute for vaccines in a yellow fever outbreak, but despite 6,100 suspected yellow fever cases in Angola and the Congo—and 400 deaths—there’s been little else to show for the response so far. Since December 2015, a vaccine shortage and bungled distribution have fueled increasing concern over the virus’s spread. “Many people believe that yellow fever in Asia is really just a matter of time,” said Bruce Aylward, ad interim executive director of WHO’s Outbreaks and Health Emergencies Cluster. Yet the regions most at risk are also the least vaccinated. “If you wrapped a thick piece of yellow caution tape around the equator of a standard-sized classroom globe, you’d have a good sense of the major world regions at risk in this outbreak,” writes Emily J. Baumgaertner. The Washington Post Diagnostic Failures A lack of official diagnoses is hampering ongoing efforts to control a yellow fever outbreak in

Steve Ahuka of DRC's National Institute of Biomedical Research said that at least 1 month had passed between the analyses of suspected yellow fever samples. Failure to get ahead of the disease is resulting in a major depletion of the global stockpile of yellow fever vaccine, which could prove disastrous if the outbreak reaches an urban environment. National regulations set a decade ago were meant to prevent hospitals from refusing to treat HIV-positive patients, but prospective patients report difficulty in getting surgery and other care when they disclose their HIV status. One surgeon at a top Shangai hospital told a reporter, “HIV is more lethal than hepatitis B and other viruses. It’s just a job and I don’t want put my life at risk.” South China Morning Post ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE India’s Babies Dying from Superbugs Nearly 1/3 of the world’s newborn deaths occur in India where 58,000 babies die annually from superbugs. With that number bound to increase, "India is absolutely in the frontline for the problem of antibiotic resistance globally," says Ramanan Laxminarayan, director of the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy, based in New Delhi and Washington DC. Recent successes in reducing the country's infant mortality rate are at risk. And the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria threatens to extend far beyond India's borders. Researchers have found that at least 1 antibiotic-resistant bacteria first identified in India has now spread to more than 70 countries. Al Jazeera
