Bioinformatics in the CS Curriculum CCSCNE 2011

SCIENCE CURRICULUM, CCSCNE 2011

2. Introduction:
The panel was part of the annual CCSCNE conference which was held at Western
New England College in Springfield, Massachusetts on April 15 -16 2011.
The session was well attended by twenty plus conference attendees, and there was a
healthy question and answer period after the brief presentations by the panel
members that outlined their work at Wentworth and Wheaton. Professor LeBlanc was
invited specifically to discuss the implications of teaching computer science to
biology majors and visa versa. All the presentations were interesting and informative
and stimulated questions about the difference between traditional CS topics and
bioinformatics as well as questions about textbooks. Professor LeBlanc (Wheaton
College in Norton, Massachusetts) is co-author of “Perl for Exploring DNA” from
Oxford University Press which is used in COMP 601, Introduction to Bioinformatics at
Wentworth. Assistant Professor Rilett has corresponded with Mark since the book
was published. There were also questions on technologies used in biostatistics( R )
and other courses.
The Presentations:

Bioinformatics at Wheaton College
Bioinformatics Data Mining
