2. WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Depression is one of the most common of all mental
health problems. One in five people experience
depression at some stage of their lives. It often looks
different in men and women, and in young people
and older adults. An awareness of these differences
helps ensure that the problem is recognized and
treated. Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. But
these feelings are usually short-lived and pass within
a couple of days. When you have depression, it
interferes with daily life and causes pain for both you
and those who care about you. Depression is a
common but serious illness. Most that experience
depression need treatment to get better.
3. COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF
DEPRESSION
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—
nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to
improve your situation.
Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight
gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies,
pastimes, social activities, or sex. You’ve lost your ability to feel
joy and pleasure.
Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early
hours of the morning, or oversleeping (also known as
hypersomnia).
Anger or irritability. Feeling agitated, restless, or even violent.
Your tolerance level is low, your temper short, and everything and
everyone gets on your nerves.
4. CONTINUING…
Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and
mistakes.
Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and
physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy,
and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to
complete.
Reckless behavior. You engage in escapist behavior
such as substance abuse, compulsive gambling,
reckless driving, or dangerous sports.
Unexplained aches and pains. An increase in physical
complaints such as headaches, back pain, aching
muscles, and stomach pain.
Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making
decisions, or remembering things.
5. WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE INCLUDE:
Talking about killing or harming one’s self
Expressing strong feelings of hopelessness or being
trapped
An unusual preoccupation with death or dying
Acting recklessly, as if they have a death wish (e.g.
speeding through red lights)
Calling or visiting people to say goodbye
Getting affairs in order (giving away prized
possessions, tying up loose ends)
A sudden switch from being extremely depressed to
acting calm and happy
Saying things like ―Everyone would be better off
without me‖ or ―I want out‖
6. TYPES OF DEPRESSION
Different types of depression often have slightly different symptoms
and may require different treatments. The five main types of
depression are listed below.
Major depression - a depressed mood that lasts for at least two
weeks. This may also be referred to as clinical depression or
unipolar depression.
Psychotic depression - a depressed mood which includes
symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things
that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you
(paranoia) and having delusions.
Dysthymia - a less severe depressed mood that lasts for years.
Mixed depression and anxiety - a combination of symptoms of
depression and anxiety.
Bipolar disorder - (formerly known as manic depressive illness) -
involves periods of feeling low (depressed) and high (manic).
7. Common medical causes of depression include:
Brain injuries and diseases (eg. stroke, heart disease,
head injury, epilepsy, Parkinson's Disease)/blockages
in vessels
Low thyroid function
Some forms of cancer
Infectious diseases
Blood vessel disease in the brain due to diabetes
and/or hypertension
Quitting smoking.
Some steroid and hormonal treatments
Anaemia
Chronic pain
8. Brain-imaging technologies, such as
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have
shown that the brains of people who have
depression look different than those of
people without depression. The parts of
the brain involved in mood, thinking, sleep,
appetite, and behavior appear different.
But these images do not reveal why the
depression has occurred. They also
cannot be used to diagnose depression.
9. COMMON TESTS DONE BY A DOCTOR
INCLUDE:
Full blood count and biochemistry
Thyroid function tests
Urine test for sugar and protein
Occasionally, a brain scan.
10. Treatment:
Cupping Therapy refers to the therapeutic method of
applying partial vacuum cups onto certain parts of
the patient's body. In Unani practice, this method
is also used in the treatment of depression.
Cupping can be used to treat a wide variety of
conditions and illnesses. Relief can be found by
those who are suffering from both emotional
difficulties such as depression and physical
conditions such as intestinal disorders. In order for
healing to be optimized, the practice works to
improve blood circulation. This technique is meant
to treat blockages and not just to relax the patient.
