Diabetes Patient Care
Diabetic Eye Care
Diabetes can affect the eye in various ways, the most often seen complication is diabetic retinopathy. The
retina is the innermost layer of the eye. The health and high metabolic activity the retina depends upon
the retinal capillary bed. This capillary bed extends like a netlike throughout the retina except for a small
area at the very centre of the macula known as the “Foveal Avascular zone”.
Our Experience with Diabetic Retinopathy
At our centre, we have screened the eyes of several thousand diabetic patients. This is one of the few
centres exclusively devoted to treatment and research in diabetic retinopathy in our country. We follow
an internationally accepted system for grading of diabetic retinopathy (ETDRS Grading System) and
decide which cases need treatment. We have currently registered 1,20,400 diabetic patients at our
centre. Out of that, 30,000 patients were treated for diabetic retinopathy and 15,000 patients had
undergone laser photocoagulation at our centre.

Diabetes Specialties Centre is fully equipped with facilities for early detection and diagnosis of diabetic
foot complications.
Nutrition and Dietetics
The department of Nutrition and Dietetics is recognized as an essential and vital part of the hospital and
dietitians / diabetes educators are accepted as a vital link in the Para-medical team of the hospital. The
nutrition department with 3 D’s – Dietary service, Diet counseling and Diet analysis contribute
significantly to the control of Diabetes and thus in preventing complications. In addition to the obvious
function of providing for the nutritional needs such a program is an adjunct to therapy. It has direct
influences on the morale and attitudes of patients and their families.
4. Obesity Patient Care
Obesity is a chronic disorder with multiple serious health complications. Previously it used to be a concern
only for developed countries but now it is becoming a problem of developing countries as well. There is a
global epidemic of obesity with prevalence as high as 30 to 40% in some regions. In India approximately
139 million people are obese (INDIAB study).
Obesity impairs quality of life and reduces life expectancy. All the effects and complications of obesity
appear at lower body weight and at a younger age in Indians as compared to white population.
